View Full Version : Bumped into Brent Staker the other day

Nice guy, big man.
Great Hair.
He thinks he'll be in the middle this year, starting in the centre then pushing foward.
I asked if he was putting pressure on Embley's role, chuckled and said he should be looking over his shoulder.
Said he was satisfied with his 07 season but wasnt rapt with it.
Said he will be training with the running group to boost his fitness and that his shins are better.
Personally, I think he'd go quite well in there.
Good to hear! Really hoping that Staker has a great 2008.

hahaha embleys role hahaha
staker will never be an embley.
and to think he will play midfield haha
the best he might do is a run with role on a wing. He will never be a true centre man. No where near the awareness or in and under skills. Plus his decision makin is below par. When u have guys like mcnamara and butler in the wings and add to that masten ebert staker has no chance playin in the middle.
Actually I heard hunter has increased his fitness why not chuck him in the middle as well

firstly, it's a bit different as Staker would be much better up forward then Embley whilst Embley is better in the middle.
Secondly, on instinct he is fine, he just has issues with thinking - many players do
Lastly, nobody was ever suggesting he would be a clone of Embley or be a true centreman. That point of yours is simply ridiculous
I would hardly call any of Embley, Burton or Goodes genuine centremen by your classification. They are all outside players who break lines, are pretty quick, strong overhead and push forward hard.
Staker has most of, if not all of, those attributes

Embley is a better forward than staker full stop
Secondly, on instinct he is fine, he just has issues with thinking - many players do
Many players dont survive or succeed in the midfield if they have issues with thinking
Lastly, nobody was ever suggesting he would be a clone of Embley or be a true centreman. That point of yours is simply ridiculous
read your own quote
"I asked if he was putting pressure on Embley's role, chuckled and said he should be looking over his shoulder."
So you are suggesting he wont be after embleys role now??
I would hardly call any of Embley, Burton or Goodes genuine centremen by your classification. They are all outside players who break lines, are pretty quick, strong overhead and push forward hard.
Staker has most of, if not all of, those attributes
Burton spends a lot of time up forward. Goodes plays an outside running role. Staker might be able to keep up aerobicly with goodes and has the height to compete but not the football brain. Goodes would use his exceptional football brain to smash him.
Staker just isnt that good! Make way too many errors and stupid decisions.

As such, it's not worthwhile debating a topic with you

Personally, I think Staker has all the attributes to play up forward, down back or in the midfield. The point that his football brain isn't fully developed is valid, which is why I can't see him holding down even a relief position in the centre, but maybe a bit of relief on the wing. Embley is a much better player than Staker, but sooner or later I think Staker will emerge as a very good player, once he works everything out. He's in for a good season in my opinion, and the Eagles will move him around a fair bit.

why am i a staker hater? Just because i dont think he can play in the mid field?
Staker has enormous potential but that doesnt make him a brillian player. He hasnt had any consistency ever.
you guys are classic. Dont like what someone has to say on an issue, so u shoot him down. You need to look outside of your little box. If he was that good he would be an automatic selection. I can guarantee you he would be one of the last picked each week. He fills our back up forward backman role.

who said he was a brilliant player?
who said he was even a very good player?
At the best at the moment he is a solid player who has the x-factor and can turn it on. He can also be bloody cold and he does need to build consistency.
That has little to do with this conversation.
Nobody ever said he'll be elite, we said he can play Embley's role. We didn't even clarify whether he'll be remotely as good as Embley or play the same style. Clearly he won't as he is much taller, less built, quicker, better overhead and more of a forward
Staker's comment was light hearted as shown by his chuckle but the reality is that Embley will most likely be needed in a number of other roles, most likely across half forward, next season

you do the name of rowan jones much shame.
Before he had the shin splints he was this season. His output diminished by 70% once he got injured and he never did recover. He hardly trained for the 2nd half of the season which would defintatly have impacted his game. If he stays injury free he will have a very good year next year.

Stakes has played in the middle a few times as a run with type role and done quite well IMO - would be good to see him in there more often.
Great to see the Eagles are exploring the idea of putting him in the middle. I think he would go quite well. Exciting season coming up for him.
1. Staker is the WCE equivilant of Brett Peake from the Dockers.
2. Glad to hear he was having a 'good hair day' - perhaps the best thing to come out of the 2007 season for WestCoast?

Stakes is one of my favourite players. I think this will be his "breakout" year. He has all the attributes, just needs some confidence. It's funny that he seems to be one of those players who polarise people (much like Fletch) when he is in fact one of the nicest guys around. There is a young man, mid 20's, who sits behind us at games, who never lets up with his criticism of Stakes ( whilst downing yet another beer:rolleyes:) and when Stakes does something special, this guy does not even have the class to acknowledge it. By the end of the year, I had just about had enough of listening to him. I hope he doesn't renew his membership this year!

This is it for Staker this year, either stand up and deliver or its time to move on, he has to many chances to close the deal for us in the last two years and has failed every time.
Certainly has some ability and i was a fan of him a couple of years ago but he has simply let the club down in my view. Twice this year in the finals he had simple chances to put the games away and failed each time.
In my view his main concern should be getting a game above where he will play.

And lets not forget the 2005 GF, had the ball 50cm from the goal line on an angle and duffed the kick for a point.
I'd rather see him play CHB and release Hunter to a running half back flank OR play him as a ruck/rover but not taking centre bounces. If up forward its not working then rotate him up there.
Due to us having Hansen, Lynch, Brown, Kennedy and C Jones as tall forward options Staker is the obvious choice to play down field instead of forward IMO.

Bumped into Barry Hall the other day
ugly guy, big head.
No Hair.
He thinks he'll be over-rated again by Robert Walls this year, starting in the Age then turning to Channel 10.
I asked if he was still over being destroyed by Glass, he looked at the ground and said it was a day by day process.
Said he was satisfied with his 07 season being over-rated by the media but wasnt rapt with it, wanted more.
Said he will be training with Brett Kirk to boost his buttock fitness and that his Kirky is pushing for their away strip to include assless chaps.

As I have said elsewhere, Staker is 6'4 and 100kg, pretty much idential to Pavlich and amazingly only slightly smaller than Lynch (4cm and 5kg). For a guy his size and with his supposed abilities - for me personally he hasn't shown much at all.
He may have a magnificent head of hair, but if he doesn't perform this season, I would suspect he'd be down the road while he still has currency.

I cant remember what the exact reason was when I posted that one, I think it may have been the start of 06 when all the Cousins/booze bus stuff happened - yeah it was coz we lost trial games to St.Kilda, Hawks and someone else in Perth and I thought it was gonna be a hard year.
Plus theres the old rule "Dont post pissed" :p
** P.S. We've only ever been 10-0 once (1991) and Im pretty sure BigFooty wasnt around then.

So actually from the respective pages, Staker is 1 or 2" taller than the other two, 4kg heavier than Nick and a minor 4kg behind Pavlich.

So actually from the respective pages, Staker is 1 or 2" taller than the other two, 4kg heavier than Nick and a minor 4kg behind Pavlich.
It is doubtful that he would ever be as good as either of those if he hasnt really shown anything in his first 100 or so games.
One can hope he's a late bloomer though.
You're only saying that to save face.
I mean, what you write seems fairly plausible but that's where your cunning lays.
me, cunning?.... ;)

:p
It was more like before the season started I posted that thread.
Didn't we go 14-0 or something in 2005?
Didn't we go 14-0 or something in 2005?
No, we went 8-0 then lost to Collingwood at the G in round 9 then won another 7 to be 15-1.
Was an unbelievable start to the season!!!
We unfortunately dropped away in the 2nd half.
15-1 and didnt finish top!?!?!?! - Crows came home with a mighty run.

Unbelievable start, but we didnt end up with the minor premiershp or the flag. Goes to show the season is a marathon and not a sprint

Why is everyone comparing him to them then??
Arr well, what ever happens It would be awesome if he has a Big season :thumbsu:

Interesting to note that our last 3 seasons have seen us get away to really good starts and set up our top 4 positioning by Rd 22.
2005: 8-0
2006: 5-0
2007: 6-0
2008: Very tough with trips to AAMI and Sydney in the first 4 weeks. If we are 4-1 or 3-2 after Round 5 its a good start.

because he has similar physical attributes and some similar skills
Kirke Special is telling the truth guys. See, that's him down the front in the WC hat.

He is only 23 and has played 90 games. I haven't written him off just yet, although he will never be a Pavlich (but then again there aren't that many of them around).

Staker has the abilty to be a great player but I think the occasion tends to get to him. He needs a good season next year. He played well for the majority of last year with a few very good games however injury cost him a bit I think. He still has a long way to go but people need to give him a break, I think some supporters want him to become the new scapegoat with RoJo gone.

Being an idiot or baiting an idiot will turn into a card from now on. I think it's fairly obvious who this is directed at.

You lay the law down powerful one ;) (just gotta love the red writing, really attention grabbing)
Personally I think he is a STRONZO!!!!:D:D

To be fair - I don't know thaat a whole lot of baiting was required
[that's half the problem :( - Mr E.]
I can make my words red too :p

Is Staker aware of the dangers of 'hat hair'?
^^ Thats far too tall for Kirke QL21.
Far too tall.
We love you E.

so you rate someone on how much they try in footy or what they write in a forum
I rate the character of players as players largely based on their effort on the field (skill is a separate matter). I will rate the character of the players as people based on what they do off the field. I will rate the character of people who write on a forum based on what they write on said forum. That is kind of all I have to go on.
you are a quality person!!!!
Thanks, most people I know seem to think so. Funny too.
I have nothing against Rowan personally but as far as his footy goes he was average to say the most
Yeah, one of those average 150 game players.
