DELISTED Adelaide utility Darren Pfeiffer says he is a new man, admitting he's "very fortunate" to be thrown an AFL lifeline by Carlton.
Taken by the Blues at pick No. 2 in yesterday's AFL pre-season draft, the 183cm utility is itching to make a fresh start at Princes Park.
Troubled by injury and off-field incidents in his two seasons at West Lakes, Pfeiffer says he has learned from his mistakes and is determined to pass on his wisdom to new team-mates.
"That's one thing I'm hoping to take to Carlton, the experience I've had through the past couple of years at Adelaide," Pfeiffer, 20, said.
"And I want to make sure that doesn't happen to the young boys at Carlton.
"They've got a relatively young list so I'll be doing all I can to help out the young boys." Drafted with Adelaide's first round pick (No. 17) in 2005, Pfeiffer initially struggled to adapt to AFL training standards and was sent back to SANFL club Norwood.
In March this year he suffered a broken cheekbone in an altercation at a Glenelg hotel before being suspended by the club for breaching a player-instigated curfew in August.
But the boy from Birdwood says he is a changed man after the incidents.
"Life is about learning and being able to improve yourself," Pfeiffer said.
"The last couple of years have been a really good learning experience for me and I feel like I've got my head right now.
"I'm just looking forward to playing AFL footy. I am really excited to be getting a second chance at Carlton."
Despite not making his AFL debut, Pfeiffer had a consistent season with the Redlegs in 2007, giving him confidence he can offer the Blues something at elite level. "I feel like there's still something there and there's still that drive there," he said.
"I feel I have the ability to play AFL. I've just got to work hard now and, hopefully, do the best I can." That won't be difficult after the scare of having his AFL dream cut short.
"I definitely feel like you've got to take your opportunities," he said.
"An AFL career can be really short, you can be gone like that and be out of the system so I'm really looking forward to grabbing this chance and going forward with it."
Pfeiffer and his former Crows team-mate, Scott Welsh – predictably taken by the Western Bulldogs at No. 4 pick – were the only two recycled AFL players taken in the pre-season draft. Welsh, offered a two-year deal by the Dogs, presents coach Rodney Eade with an exciting attack weapon

The best part about the article is that he has publically let us know that he's determined to keep his head in all the right spots. Great find:thumbsu:

If he can offer this sort of guidance to the youngsters who are 18 and suddenly have a bucketload of money then this is good.
If he can back this up with some good performances for the club, then all the better.
Lead by example is always a good option.

Talk is cheap, but saying nothing is even cheaper.
He's gone on record, acknowledged the issue, and not just stuck his head in the sand like an eagle...err I mean ostrich, and waited for the problem to go away.
He could have just said he's looking forward to playing some good footy and left it at that.
I've got a good feeling. Mind you the last good feeling was Cain Ackland.....

Very similar tune to what Cloke was singing this time last year, and no one could fault Cloke's endeavour since trading in his prison bars for Navy Blue -very encouraging! :thumbsu:

Fantastic that he publicly aknowledges his mistakes and I sincerely hope he does succeed in turning it all around HOWEVER, I would suggest Setanta the teetotaller may be a better role model for our younger players, especially if he can pass on some of his passion :thumbsu:
Let Pfeiffer concetrate on staying off the piss and getting his body ready for his (apprently long overdue) AFL debut.
Thanks for that, sounds hopeful....geez I hope he has his head screwed on now though! :(
I'm hoping that a change of scenery, and getting out of his comfort zone might just be the thing that he needs. WH & Co. don't generally takes kids (or delisted players for that matter) that have issues, so Pfieffer must have really impressed them during his interview.

Pfeiffer will definitely benefit from getting out of the little country town that is Adelaide. Crows players there are so over exposed it is a joke. EG: earlier this year Rhys Archard on their Rookie List was given a half page article in the Advertiser, yet the bloke barly got a kick in the SANFL and walked out on the club late in the season.
Pfeiffer will also benefit somewhat from being away from mates and family who can sometimes add extra pressure to perform.
At the end of the day he is a low risk selection for us and won't chew up much salary cap $$. If he comes good - great, if not - so what.
I like the cut of his jib.
Funny post. (i'm sure unintentional though) (poonce)
