Versatile key position player who kicks well on preferred left side. Impressive in NAB AFL U18 Championships at Full Back winning All-Australian honours. Sprint and Repeat Sprint Ability were highlights at the NAB AFL Draft Camp with 20m sprint time of 2.91sec (Top 3%) and Repeat Sprint Test time of 25.07sec (Top 8%). From Ballarat F.C.
Nathan J Brown was drafted with pick 10 in the 2006 National Draft. An U/18 All Australian Full Back in 2006, Collingwood have high hopes Nath can take over from Presti + Wakes in years to come.
From Ballarat, Victoria, Nath and his twin brother Mitch (Currently on the West Coast Eagles list), were both very talented basketball juniors, and both focused on a career in basketball throughout their early to mid teens.
Both represented Vic Country and Victoria in National Championships, and both attended the AIS for basketball.
Nathan played his junior football for Ballarat Football Club, and for his school St.Patricks College. Nathan originally played his football as a ruckman/key forward. However, after u/15 level they both quit football to concentrate on basketball.
At age 17, they were asked to train with the North Ballarat Rebels, the regions TAC Cup side. Nathan in particular impressed in pre season training, and both were selected in the final 50 man squad for the upcoming season.
While playing for St.Pats, Nathan, completely blanketed a then school boy phenomenon in Travis Cloke, holding the future Collingwood b+f winner to 1 goal and 4 possessions.
Nathan is capable of playing both positions on the field, but will be viewed upon by Collingwood as the answer to the KP back issues in the near future. However, in his junior days, Nathan was more comfortable in the Forward line, using his pace, height and strenth to overwhelm the opposition.
Early on, both Nath and Mitch were rather slender, and were criticised for being "soft"players. (I'd know, i thought they were soft when i played against them!)
However, they come back to football with a massive frame and with increased hardness.
Good mates with Ben Reid (also a talented basketballer), the pair currently live together and should form the bookends in the Collingwood team in years to come.
P.S - Dont hate Nath because of this, but he used to barrack for Carlton and Mitch used to barrack for Collingwood. It was very funny when they were both drafted!

A quote from Strauchanie's book 'Bryan Strauchan: My Story' about Browny.
"16. Nathan Brown - He walked into this club & I said "'Get back to the Tigers!" He quietly said, "I'm not that Nathan Brown." So, Strauchanie hit back with "Go back to the Deamons!" He replied, "I'm not that Nathan Brown either." Strauchanie said, "Go back to snoopy!" to witch Nathan replied, "That's Charlie Brown." Bucks stepped in & suggested we get on with the Jounior Footy Clinic. Not sure what we can expect from Nathan Brown - they seem like they are a dime a dozen but there is only one Strauchanie."

AFL twins take time out
EVEN AFL players need to "veg out" in front of the cricket on TV during the summer break.
AFL-listed brothers Nathan and Mitch Brown have been enjoying the chance to "chill" during the Christmas break at their parents' home near Haddon. And while footy training continues year-round, the twins have at least managed to have some much-needed time-out with family, friends and each other.
The former North Ballarat Rebels were drafted to opposite ends of the country in 2006, Nathan being picked up by Collingwood with pick 10 and Mitch joining the West Coast Eagles with pick 16.
"I think being away from home this year has brought us closer to our friends," Mitch said. "It has made us value the time we have with them.
"We've caught up with some of our mates. We can't get out on the turps because the clubs don't like that but, because it was our birthday on December 17, we had this Kris Kringle where each of us had to bring a costume along for someone else to wear out. We both ended up dressed as (McDonalds) waiters. It was pretty funny."
The twins have spent plenty of time together over the past few weeks, including a night at the trots. But, perhaps surprisingly, they don't often talk footy and they don't train together.
"We have our own training programs and we haven't compared notes," Mitch says.
"And I wouldn't really want to compare what we do with Collingwood anyway," he jokes.
Nathan, the elder of the two by about 20 minutes, said he was training about two hours each day for the past two and a bit months.
"The younger guys tend to do extra because you're trying to get into the ones," he said.
While Nathan was picked earlier in the draft, Mitch has been the first to play AFL football.
After several games with East Fremantle in the WAFL (Western Australian Football League), Mitch received his promotion to the elite level, playing five matches with the Eagles.
Being a senior footballer in Perth means being public property and being under the gaze of the media. Fortunately, Mitch says, West Coast has plenty of experience easing young footballers into the spotlight.
"I originally thought moving across would be hard but I have a host family that has helped enormously. I don't feel homesick over there and I'm actually looking forward to going back," he said.
"I have learned to deal with going out in public. It's very different - even before I'd played they know all about you.
"With everything that's gone on over there there's extra pressure to behave but that's not been hard for us. We are a different group of players now. It's a new era - I know that's a cliche but it's true."
Nathan hasn't been under the spotlight quite as much, although being a Collingwood player would be the nearest thing to the "Eagles experience" for a Victorian-based footballer.
"Because there are so many clubs in Melbourne it is a bit different but I'd say the amount of publicity is still an eye-opener," Nathan says.
"We get the odd fanatic of course, but Melbourne is a very big place. On my birthday I did get a few presents from some."
In a sense, Nathan's move to Melbourne has been a bigger challenge than Mitch's move west.
Collingwood is better than most at looking after its new players but, compared with the Eagles' foster family-type system, the young Pies tend to fend for themselves, according to Nathan.
"I've moved in with (fellow draftee) Ben Reid to a place in St Kilda and it's been hard because I've never had to cook for myself before," he says.
"It's been good in a way. It makes you more assertive and independent. I think it has forced me to grow up and look after myself."
So far Nathan has played his football in Melbourne with Williamstown as part of the Seagulls' affiliation with the Magpies. With Collingwood introducing its own VFL team next year, Nathan will be in black-and-white either way this season, although an early call-up to the AFL team is a firm possibility.
Ironically, as children Mitch was the Collingwood supporter, while Nathan was a Collingwood-hating Carlton supporter.
Nathan says it hasn't taken him much time to adopt the Collingwood philosophy of disliking Carlton. And when the Pies knocked over the Eagles in extra time in this year's semi-final at Subiaco, Nathan was only too happy to let his brother know about it via an SMS.
The brothers' working year didn't end with the footy season. Mitch joined the rest of the West Coast squad for a trip to South Africa, visiting the townships to spread the Aussie Rules gospel.
"The AFL has started up some footy that's a bit like Auskick. It's now in its second year and the young kids in the townships are really taking to the sport. Some have a lot of skill," he explains.
Early in the new year it will be Nathan's turn as Collingwood heads to South Africa for a similar program, before playing a NAB Cup match in Dubai against the Adelaide Crows in February.
For the time being there's a bit more cricket for the pair to enjoy before Mitch heads back to Perth on New Year's Day. Nathan returns to the Lexus Centre on Thursday.

Anyway, back to the topic.
Went to the tennis with Nath and a few mates from Ballarat yesterday, and he is massive. Weighs in now at 98 kg, and still top 5 for speed at the club.
Set a new PB for benchpress the day before, lifting 130kgs. Equal 2nd at the club in terms of benchpress with one A.Rocca. Swan, surprisingly is the leader with 140kg.
Said he expects to play a few games this season. Should be good to see him improve as he year goes on and he can compete with the bigger bodied forwards.
Leaves for Dubai tomorrow, then on to from South Africa from there, and back to Dubai to play the crows.
Also bagged my mate who barracks for Carlton, said Carlton are shit! lol so its good he has quickly become a hater of the Scum.

That doesn't surprise me one bit tbh.
I've always thought Thomas' main trait was his acceleration, and not his pace.
And Swan's athletic capabilities are very under rated.

Debutant Nathan Brown leaves the field a happy man after the round one victory over Fremantle
Nathan Brown described winning his first game of AFL football as one of the best feelings of his life.
The 19-year-old key defender admitted to getting a little emotional as the reality of having been part of a victory set in as he left the ground following the Magpies’ 26-point opening round triumph over Fremantle .
“One of the best feelings of my life, it was really emotional coming off the field, it was really good, a dream come true,” Brown told CTV immediately after singing ‘Good Old Collingwood Forever’ for the first time.
But despite the euphoria of experiencing win number one, Brown is keeping his head down as he embarks on a mission to cement his place in the side for the duration of 2008.
“Now I’ve got to back it up for 22 weeks, it’s really exciting.”
Brown, drafted from North Ballarat with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft, was thrust into the limelight when told to stand Fremantle star Matthew Pavlich, but the youngster certainly didn’t look overawed, keeping Pavlich to one goal and playing a significant role in the win.
While Pavlich worked hard to try and have an impact on the game, Brown was able to stay with him and apply immense pressure, particularly when Pavlich got himself into dangerous positions.
His attitude, however, isn’t one of being overawed by his big name opponents, rather his focus was on beating the player and not the name, and getting the defensive basics right.
“Just another player to get on top of. All I want to do is get the ball out of the backline, that’s the aim of the game for me.”
Brown finished with three kicks, five handballs and four tackles, and while he didn’t set the stats sheet alight, it was his effort, intensity and willingness to keep Pavlich in check that were most impressive.
Collingwood went into the game with a great deal less experience than their counterparts from the west, but the young Magpies never buckled even when Fremantle kicked ahead in the third term, eventually running over the top and booting six final-term goals.
Even after just one game, Brown has clearly been inspired by the Collingwood ethos.
“That’s the Collingwood thing, the passion we have, we stick it out, we never give up, we end up never losing the fight.”
Over the past 12 months the Magpies have blooded a large number of youngsters, with many exceeding all expectations, and Brown looks to be another quality youngster the club has unearthed.
“It’s a credit to the staff at Collingwood, they prepare us. Richo (development manager Alan Richardson), with the development program, he prepares us for the game, we’re ready to go, and we don’t let the team down.”

no-one wants to mention that he FINALLY got his Rising Star nomination.......ok then?
here is the article from the AFL website..
GREAT STUFF BROWNY .....a tad over due but well done, you deserve it..
he also leads the club in one percenters.and 11th in the WHOLE LEAGUE for one percenters.
COLLINGWOOD defender Nathan Brown's strong showing against some of the league's most dangerous forwards this year has been recognised, with the young gun winning the round 10 nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star.
Brown, 19, played against West Coast Eagle Josh Kennedy in the Magpies' 100-point win on Saturday at the MCG, and picked up 13 possessions and laid three tackles.
The young defender said he was happy with his solid performance, which comes after a spate of tough assignments against powerful forwards such as Jonathan Brown, Matthew Pavlich, Lance 'Buddy' Franklin, Matthew Lloyd, Brendan Fevola and Matthew Richardson.
"I try to pride myself on being consistent, and I think it was just another consistent, good game," Brown told afl.com.au.
"I was pretty happy with it, but I was also just happy with a 100-point win more than anything."
Saturday's landslide win over West Coast meant a little extra to Brown than it did to others, as his twin brother Mitchell is a member of the Perth club's list.
The 'other' Brown is currently sidelined after undergoing a knee reconstruction in the pre-season, but that didn't stop the Eagle from refusing to share tips with his twin on how to handle Kennedy on the weekend.
"Funnily enough, he didn't give me ideas," Collingwood's Brown laughed.
"We don't really talk much about footy, it's more catching up on day-to-day things, more 'How're you going', stuff.
"I tried to badger him and get stuff out of him, but I couldn't.
"I call him after every game and we have a chat, but this time he wasn't that happy to talk."
Brown played elite basketball as a junior before being recruited by the Magpies with selection No.10 overall in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft.
He spent last year playing for Williamstown as his body developed, but now as a 195cm/97kg defender, he's getting a regular opportunity in the side.
The former North Ballarat Rebel has played every game this season, with the club's coaching staff often putting full confidence in his abilities and assigning him the toughest forward option.
But, Brown has crossed every hurdle so far and relishes the constant challenges that are thrown at him. He also believes the club's defensive structure is starting to jell as a whole, which has been reflected in the Pies' past three victories.
"I think we've finally just clicked and it's started to work," he said.
"It's taken us a couple of games to get us all together, and we're finally smashing out our game plan and being 100 per cent with pressure and with one percenters, and it's working at the moment.
"That's the focus – that it's more of a team thing than an individual thing.
"Our pressure and the simple things we're doing are taking a load off defence, I think.
"In all the games, the scoreline might not say so, but they've all been tough and the opponents have still been running hard even though they're behind on the scoreboard.
"They still want to kick goals, so sides have still been pretty tough to match up on every week, and that's the challenge for us."
Brown is the first Collingwood player to be nominated for this year's award, and joins Bachar Houli (Essendon), Josh Hill (Western Bulldogs), Rhys Palmer (Fremantle), Kieren Jack (Sydney), Ben McKinley (West Coast), Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn), Austin Wonaeamirri (Melbourne), Kurt Tippett (Adelaide) and Garrick Ibbotson (Fremantle) as contenders.
