Sydney Cricket Ground
2:15pm Saturday December 16
The Kiwis have still only beaten Australia in international cricket nine times this century, and their advantage in Chappell-Hadlee cricket will be wiped out if Australia can wrap up this series with a win in Sydney. As I said before the last game, Gilchrist, Ponting, Clarke, Symonds and Lee all sat out that series earlier in the year – those batsmen made 51, 107 not out, 48 and 28 not out in a comfortable win in Adelaide, and Lee took 2/48. Tait and Mills both copped it early from their opposition keepers, but both recovered well to be the leading wicket-takers for their respective sides, though it took Hogg and Martin to get through the glovemen, both trying to clear the long straight boundaries of Adelaide Oval. The main difference between the sides was the number threes – How made 20 from 59, Ponting made 107 from 108. Bracken versus Gillespie also seems a big win to Australia – but the left armer’s three maidens were all bowled to How and if you take out Gillespie’s 3 most economical overs there isn’t much difference in the final figures.
Australia seemingly picked what they thought was their best XI – does that continue here or do Gilchrist, who has played a lot more domestic cricket lately than the rest of his teammates, and Tait, with his odds of playing on Boxing Day shortening by the day, get a rest to allow Haddin and the unlucky Johnson another chance to impress? Wouldn’t think it would be Hogg having a game off at the SCG, but they have done it before, including last year against the Kiwis.
The Kiwis surprised a little by picking Martin ahead of Patel, and poor old Michael Mason who took 2/46 in Sydney in January, then had an up and down World Cup, then found himself playing for an A side against Australian state sides, and took 11 wickets in three games to earn him a spot in the squad for Test and one day tours of South Africa, where he sat in the stands as all the later inclusions were picked ahead of him. Now what was I saying before Mason became Brad Hodge and I became his mother? Something to do with playing Patel I think – they didn’t do it at the SCG last year (only playing him on the seamer-friendly Hobart and Perth pitches), and if Glenn McGrath hadn’t been at his miserly best with 3/24 they would’ve been a good chance of making the extra runs the Bondless attack needed to defend. Still don’t know if Cumming’s coming, but Vincent and McCullum seem safe at the top for at least the rest of this series, and How also seems to have enough runs on the board to stay a bit longer.
