View Full Version : 1978 SANFL Grand Final

Having a discussion with a couple of ex-pat friends about the 1978 Grand Final - I say Phil Gallagher got a dodgy holding the ball from Des Foster to win the game. They said it was a dodgy mark - one even suggested it was Peter Mead who gave it.

Can I get a definitive answer?

Not sure which one of those umpires but 1 of them(whichever 1 gave the decision) admitted about 5 years ago he made a mistake with that last decision.

Yep, I heard that. Reckon it was Foster.

AAAAARGH!

Now that's out of my system.

It was bloody Des Foster, he came out on the news in 1993 and admitted he ballsed up. Gee thanks Des, it was ONLY A PREMIERSHIP.

It was a dodgy mark, I beleive. But really Foster isn't even sure what he paid.

It could be argued that straighter kicking would have sealed the game long before that, but to lose by a point on a dodgy decision sticks the knife in.

Watching the G/F video Bagshaw at
full forward early looks a bit of a mistake.
(More effective on the flank.)

Why'd they get rid of Greenslade?

I could'nt see much in the Foster thing myself.

First time I watched this game was September
last year half way throught the last quarter the
plane hit the tower....

Pffft!
Norwood would have won anyway, Sturt cant blame Des Foster for being 30pts up and blowing a lead like that, there were many "dodgy" goals in the first 3 quarters that were as a result of crap free kicks to Sturt.
And if you think I sound like a Norwood supporter, its because I WAS a Norwood supporter in the 70s! lol
Until I saw the error of my ways.

Have to agree. When I think of the beltings I saw Woodville get from 1969 (when I had my first guernsey - number 14, Ray Huppatz) right through to merger.... Never a thought for a second of jumping ship.

What a sad, tragic story. Another sorry tale of a poor, misguided soul tempted by the power of the dark side. :D

Myself, I was born in Glenelg Community hospital to Glenelg supporting parents, grew up just down diagonal road (Oaklands Pk), was educated in Glenelg's catchment zone, played footy in Glenelg area's schoolboy comps, played mini league for the Bays (against North, coincidentally), went to high school down the road from the club, have lived in the approximate Glenelg area ever since leaving the nest (Parkholme, South Plympton) and currently live at Glenelg North - within staggering distance of the club.

One eye is black and the other gold. Always has been - always will be.

Hmmm. I had a "friend" (and I use that term in the loosest possible sense) who dumped Norwood for Glenelg solely because all his mates were Glenelg supporters. Norwood promptly won the premiership that year (1984). Perhaps this guy should get a mention on the "biggest club-hopping loser" thread :D

Don't know about the Queens Head, but you'll definitely see me in front of the scoreboard.

WTF?
Unlike most morons that just go with the flow or their family I wanted to be different and how is leaving Norwood who were at the top of the tree to follow North who were wooden spooners in 1978 bailing?
Takes a lot of guts to follow a team like North through thick and thin considering Ive always lived south of town and all my family goes for a different side.
Personally I think its **** weak when people just go with the flow, ie follow the top teams like Port or just follow their friends, family or local community, get some balls people!
BTW I didnt exactly leave Norwood, I stopped following the footy for a few years (followed Adelaide City in its hey day) as I lost interest. As at school you HAD to follow a side I just said North for the sake of it, went to a game in the early 80s an have hardly missed one since!
Plus there is no grass for the kids to play on at Norwood Oval!
Mind you the Coopers is tempting.
I cant understand why anyone would follow any team but North Adelaide after all the cheapest beer in the SANFL is at Prospect.
