Doubt he will get any bigger than the likes of Scott Stevens, Brad Fisher or Andrew Mackie but there is absolutely no doubt on his talent. Will take time but I think it will be worth it with him, given the way you are hardly allowed to breath on an opponent with the new rules I think he will still have an impact.

If he could put on the 13 kg or so required to bring his weight up to that of Mackie i'd be delighted !

It's actually pronounced Tony Not, not Not - e (i think i win the prize for using the word not the most times in a sentence :D )

Also, Masten is pronounced Mars-ten and not Mass - ten, at least this is how it was on draft day and you would hope they know how to say the names.

Just before the draft on the news they were pronouncing it as "note" and they had the pronunciation in the Geelong Advertiser because Geelong were going to draft him at pick 16 as they through he was the best talent in the draft (dunno what happen and why they didnt, but their loss)

On that WAFL show on channel 31, one of the hosts mentioned that Sumich has been saying Notte was the best forward the Eagles have had since himself.

Big wraps from Sumich.

Also, at this stage Notte is 7th in the WAFL goal kicking with 10 while Chad Jones is tied 4th with 15 majors.

And I believe he's spot on! The kid knows how to move as a forward and read the ball and lead to the right spot.

It would be awesome to have a gun forward. I hope they don't rush him in. From what I've read, he seems to have faded out in his matches. Needs to get a solid fitness base, and strength. Despite the goals he scores and form he shows, I think we need to be strong and let him sit out for however long is needed, a year or two or three.

Yes, I think he seems to fade but then last week they threw him on to the ball to ruck for a few minutes, just to get him in to the game I presume. So I would suspect it is his fitness that needs working on.

That's one thing West Coast doesn't do, is rush them in, despite the baying for new blood from many quarters.

Tall Tony learning the ropes

By Nathan Schmook 10:51 AM Tue 01 July, 2008

Big things are expected of Eagle Tony Notte

GIVEN that he might not have ended up playing football at all, West Coast is fortunate to have the tall and hugely talented Tony Notte on its list.
As with so many sporting young Australians, Notte grew up torn between his nation's summer and winter obsessions, and the fact his two brothers took the cricket path stacked the odds firmly against football, and ultimately West Coast.
But when AFL was on his mind, Anthony Koutoufides' one-handed pick-ups were inspiring the young Carlton supporter. And a few years down the track, Notte chose footy when in contention for WA's representative cricket and football sides.
"I played a bit of State cricket, and then when the 16s came around I really had to make a choice between cricket and footy," the composed 18-year-old said.
"It was a difficult choice because both brothers play cricket, and we're pretty much more cricket-orientated than footy, but I decided to play footy."
Standing 194cm, Notte's unique brand of leg spin would have caught the eye amongst humbler frames in the summer game. But if the first-year player though he'd slip into an AFL club behind tall timber Dean Cox, Josh Kennedy and Quinten Lynch and go unnoticed, he was wrong.
A quick inquiry as to Notte's whereabouts at training earned this reply from teammate Shannon Hurn – "he's not hiding behind a beanpole, is he?" Given Notte, who arrived at West Coast a 71kg giant, gives away 25kg to the shorter Hurn, it's easy to see where the cheek comes from.
But Notte knows his game, and is sure it's only a matter of time until his body is ready for AFL football. For now, strong marking, speed and impressive skills are features of the tall forward's repertoire.
"You've got to be smart when you're playing footy, and that's one of my strengths," he said.
"As I get bigger and stronger I'll be able to use my body a lot more, but at the moment I'm just working on the things that I can do now, and my skills and my marking are probably my strengths."
Notte was West Coast's only key position selection at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft, taken with pick number 20. It was a proud day for the AIS-AFL Academy graduate.
"I don't think there's been much that compares to being drafted," he reflects.
Draft day was very exciting and a big achievement.
"Playing my first game will be the next thing. It's all about preparing myself. I've just got to put on some weight and fitness and just all that kind of stuff, and then it'll come."
Notte has taken some big steps during his first six months with the club. He arrived as a bewildered Swan Districts colt but is now playing regular senior football for his WAFL club and getting used to the rhythm of AFL life.
"When I arrived, I didn't really know what to expect. It was just more excitement, and I couldn't really believe that I was here," he said.
"Playing a couple of league games now and getting used to the bigger bodies and that kind of stuff, it's improved a lot I think."
An AFL apprenticeship keeps Notte busy away from the training track, and he says his friends have allowed him to slip into his new job pretty easily.
It all augurs well for West Coast, and the club would do well to remind its exciting recruit of a former Carlton star who turned his back on a promising athletics career to give football a go. But after 267 games in the navy blue and too many one-handed pick-ups to count, Notte would surely know the story of Koutoufides.

Good article I think. I was hoping they would give his current weight though.

surprising that woosh mentioned his name in the press conference today.

although, we have nothing to lose except maybe tony's life if he gets smashed.

17 Jul 2008, 04:26
he'll be fine, he's just gotta fill out. the wraps coming have been great so i think we have great reason to be excited.

playing him this year will be a big mistake though. risking a serious injury in a lost season would just be silly for mine. given his light weight i'd be looking at mid 2009 at the earliest, maybe not even till mid 2010 depending on his development.

he shouldn't be under any pressure at all to show a thing at AFL level for the time being.

bookmark that you will be suffering as a fremantle supporter for quite a while longer.

i reckon he done a few things today, quick spins out of traffic and a few quick handballs. add 25kgs on him and i reckon his mobility and hands will be a real asset for us.

like we'd delist a project player at the end of next year. i didnt think he'd play senior footy til at least 2010 anyway.

Everyone knows I love the Notte! But that piece of play where the ball was delivered about a metre in front of him, he was on the lead at pace, half vollied, a deft give straight away to  a midfielder running past who delivered to Embley about 25m out from goal. Now, I ask you, what forward have we had that can bend down and pick up a ball and give off like that? He'll be fine, as others have said, as long as we can put some more meat on the bones.

Are you stupid? We won't be delisting a long-term KPP prospect after 2 years on the list at the age of 19!!

That is something that only the worst drafting and trading club in the history of the AFL would do. There is a reason you are long suffering and we have 3 premierships. Stupidity obviously runs deep in Fremantle, from the Chairman, to the coach, all the way to the supporters.

Once he gets another 10 or so kilos on and improves strength and stamina the praying mantis could be anything. That would get him up to the weight that Justin Westhoff (Port Adelaide) was at the start of this season (about 81 kg). Given that he is 4cm shorter than Westhoff, that could be a good playing weight for him. It would probably take another couple of preseasons for him to acheive that however.
