After getting a taste of AFL level footy in 2006 where he played 6 games, Shannon played in all 24 games in 2007.

He played mainly in the back half either as a back pocket or halfback flanker with the very occasional run in the midfield. Did some good stopping jobs players like A Davey in round 9 & S Grant in round 10. Round 12 against the Saints was where he scored the most votes in our award, 103 of them. Coincidently that was where he played more in the midfield.

Purely on stats he improved his averages in most in 2007 as should be expected. Only missing out on getting 10 or more possessions in 1 game. A couple of things I noticed though is that he is yet to achieve a game of 20 possessions and his ratio of kicks to handballs is nearly 1 to 1. That probably is partly due to it being his second season so he lays the ball off to more experienced players. With one of his main assets being his kicking hopefully he will start to kick it more often as on the run his kicking especially his depth of kicking would easily be in the top 5 of our current squad.

Where to in 2008? Most of us here would love to see him move further up the ground. Whether that be right in the middle, where his clean hands and size would be useful as a clearance player. Or trying to give him a bit of time and space on the wing. When Hansen takes his marks up near the wing who better would there be to running past to receive a handball, run his full measure and kick deep into the forward line or just go straight for the goals? Would be a great floodbuster as the ball would move 65-80 meters in a matter of seconds. I guess the only question is whether given how solidly built he is does he have the tank to do it for long periods? The other role I think he could perform well would be the Rojo one but more offensive, where he plays as a HFF pushing up the ground and then running forward as required. Having played in defense the defensive side of his game has been developed where he should be able to help keep the ball in our forward line if we are going to have a tall forward line this year.

Personally I'm really looking forward to seeing the continued development of my sponsored played as there will be opportunities to show us all the talent that we have seen glimpses of on a more consistent basis in 2008.

Here is a couple of youtube vids.

Best thing about this he only handballs about twice

Shannon Hurn kicking long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUngzxMDOLs)

The old run around the back set play. Should see more of it in 2008.

His first half of the season was very very exciting, doing a sterling job in the back pocket while also kicking 9 of his 11 goals in the first 13 rounds.

Most promising was the game against the saints, Voss like in the way he injected himself into the game by winning clearances and kicking a goal from nothing from about 40 meters out the way only a big bodied midfielder can.

Second half of the season wasn't as good, like he was carrying an injury or wasn't able to run out the games nearly as well, not much could be expected since it was his first real preseason because of his cricket commitments at junior level and OP concerns in his first year at the club.

Played a couple of very solid games in the finals, a cool head given such high pressure and gives good indications of his future at the club. Can pretty much guarantee 200 games for the club injury and home sickness permitting.

do you think he will have a good season in d/t and s/c????

He's not a very big stat getter, but he's improving and will probably play midfield more this year, so may be worth a punt.

The Good

- Roved Leuenberger tap, quick kick forward

- Received kick from Embley on the wing. Played on, had a bounce and kicked long to Lynchs advantage in the square. Lynch dropped the mark but the sun would have been a factor at that stage of the game. Wirra crumbs & goals

- Made contest to give a 2 on 1 against Brown, result no mark.

- Got loose in center of the ground & received a squaring pass from Waters played on and kicked long to about 20-25 out. No score resulted.

- Ran back with the flight of the ball to make a contest with Brown who had got away from Glass. Spoiled the ball & followed up with tackle on Brown who had gathered loose ball.

- Provided shepherd for Nicoski who kicks OOF.

- Received handball from Fletcher on defensive side of the wing. Ran into center corridor & kicked long to Lynch on the lead who drops mark on 50m line.

- Switched play a couple of times in D50 with pinpoint 40m passes

- Intercepts Brisbane players handball & dishes off to Kerr

- Beats Black to loose ball & gets away handball

- Receives ball on the wing has a bounce & comes back towards center corridor. Kicks from just inside center square to the goaline where Hunter takes the mark that was ruled as the 2nd grab being over the line, BUGGER!!

- Clears ball forward from center square

- Gives off handball to Staker who kicks goal that seals the game

The Bad

- Gave away 3 free kicks, 2 were with high tackles to Brown & Charman. Bad technique

- Found space in center of ground (good bit) gave off poor handball to Rosa but at least followed up to provide shepherd

- Chases ball from center but fumbles when he reaches it

- Reads ball off pack but fumbles (again!), regathers & gives off 1m handball to a stationary Nicoski, bad option. A pack forms & he stands on edge with touch on Brennan, the ball comes out Brennan collects & takes off leaving Hurn flat footed. To make matters worse he then failed to chase at all, very poor IMO

- Goes for loose ball but looses out to a more desperate Stiller

- Misses mark running back with flight, gathers but this allows time for a Lions player to put on pressure, as a result he scrubs a kick up the line

- Kerr was running onto loose ball with Power tracking him, didn't go hard enough to shepherd Kerr. Kerr got it anyway

- Begley has ball & they are heading on angle toward each other. Went from trot to fast jog & then to full run. Should have put pressure on quicker

- Receives handball in space, runs to just behind center of circle & kicks long, ball ends up over the line inside 50. From the vision it looked like Embley may have been on the lead & while the long kick looks great I'm not sure it was the best option this time.

Summary

I really liked his ability to find space around the midfield & how when he got the ball how he went to the corridor where possible & moved the ball quickly into the forward 50 rather than messing around the ball. However I do think he doesn't appear desperate enough at times in the contests. He's got that big body & wish he'd throw it around a bit more. I'd rather see a mistake through desperation than have him hold back. He also second grabbed & fumbled a bit as well.

with that last one

Embley had his opponent in better position & Hurn had an opponent on his right side, his best option was to gain 60m for the team and have a boundary through in. The other options were an unbalanced kick to Embley in a bad positon or to try cut inboard and risk being tackled.

I think he made a good option on that one but it was a bad situation, if he was on the other side of the ground (right leg natural swinging the ball to the left) then he could have gone long but he will learn from that.

not a great start to the season but as the old saying goes

the ox is slow but the earth is patient

he has only played 30 games so give him time, progress is no slower than Ryan Griffen.

Summary

I can't handle the thought of going through the pain of watching that game again. Was moved onto Goodwin after Nicoski & Selwood had both been outplayed by him. Tried hard but was always a step behind & the ball was coming out of our forward line with nil pressure from the witches hats & flowing quickly down the ground, resulting in some very good delivery to Goodwin especially in the last quarter. On a hiding to nothing really.

Unfortunately now it looks like a bit more than that. Broke his leg by the sounds of things.
