news detail

The Club is pleased to announce some exciting changes to its Leadership team for 2008.
Kane Johnson will Captain the Richmond Football Club for the fourth consecutive season. His new Vice-Captains will be Chris Newman and Nathan Foley. Chris has been elevated from the Leadership group to Vice Captain and Nathan joins the Leadership team for the first time.
Senior Coach Terry Wallace said “It’s a great sign for the Club to see some of our younger generation emerging as leaders and wanting to take on more responsibility. Both Chris and Nathan are very hard working, set great examples, and are very much respected within the group. We look forward to them helping shape the future of our Club”.
The Leadership team will also include Troy Simmonds, Nathan Brown, Joel Bowden and for the first time, Kane Pettifer.
“It is also pleasing to still have several, highly respected senior players in our Leadership team. They will continue to play an extremely important role in the development of our group and ably assist Kane, Chris and Nathan” said Wallace.

No Richo?????

Richo said he wanted to give someone else an opportunity in the leadership group last year and stepped down.

Great to see Chris Newman finally getting title of VC, he doesn't seem to get enough recognition from outside the club.

You malakas threw Bryce Gibbs to the wolves last year and nearly wrecked the kid.

I would have preferred Browny as captain to be honest but generally happy with the leadership lineup.

What a sensational effort for Nathan Foley. From rookie to vice captain in 2 years. Well done to the lad.

Newman came back this year after a badly broken leg and was one of the few players on our team who can hold his head high. Week in week out he holds his opponent, and provides amazing drive off half back. Hes pure guts, just look at the first essendon v richmond game last year where he nailed winderlinch and davey with huge run down tackles in succession. Davey had to get carried off.

Pettifer is a bit of a wtf though.

At least Brown would get more media exposure as captain which could result in more members and sponsership.
Atm i have to remain content with Johnson because we haven't got a good leader and great player at the age bracket of 27ish.

And now they all want a guy who hasn't played a game for the club, and spent the second half of last year crippled, to be their new captain. No matter how good or bad their team is, Carlton fans are morons.

We bring some new blood into the Vice Captaincy, yet we still keep the same old, wallpaper* of a Captain. Wtf ? Surely Johnson's related to Wallace. How else does he keep the Captaincy? May as well give it to Richo (admittedly, who I bag a lot). At least you'd see & hear Richo out on the ground. And Richo might miss his shots at goal.....but at least they go in the right direction.

And Pettifer in the leadership group??....Let's give him something like that when he can 'lead' his own form into some consistency......like 3 good to average games in a row! Shit....if Pettifer is in the Leadership Group.....the lunatics have really taken over the asylum!!

(*wallpaper = Something that hangs around, no one notices, and inspires nobody)

Yeh, the RFC does it again......3 Major decisions to get right for season 2008......and they only get the Vice Captaincy right......lol.....****ing clowns!

Great Decision , As if Johnson was eber gonna get the flick. He'll be a great team man and both Foley & Newman will be able to keep the boys on track while Johnson is on the pine having a breather as he is getting older.

I do believe we need 1 more year of Johnson and the fact they have had the balls to make the Bowden and Brown Decision is a real plus for our club.

In saying that you gotta feel sorry for Andy Collins though although it might be a year or two early for him. He'll rule Coburg though with an iron fist. I thought a spot on the leader ship group could of been on the cards for the young man but at least he'll be able to concentrate on his own game.

you referring to the Richmond of Coburg leadership group? What have you seen of this kid to be so wrapped up in him, I hope your right mate but at this stage i consider him a gamble like peterson was.... if he doesnt develop at all this year he'll be delisted and considered just another very late draft pick that didnt pay off- like the other 500 50+ draft picks who never amounted to anything.

At the start of 2007 I went through our list and highlighted who wouldn't be there at the end of the year. The only one I got wrong was Pat Bowden. Every one else I new would get the chop. Andy Collins is a 200 game player for Richmond. He'll push hard all year and break threw late in the year, and that will be the start of something special, he'll be around for a long time.

Congratulations to Newman and Foley, both very deserving.

You bring up Collins in every single team discussion thread no matter how ridiculous it seems. You have got to be a close friend or relative.

Great post. Pettifer has been top six last two years in b&f, played all 66 games over last 3 years since terry has been coach, top 3 goal kicking and gets along well with older and younger players at the club. Its a great move to introduce some new blood into the leadership group, Newman, Foley and Pettifer need to lead from the front if Richmond are going to be competitive.

Yeh, Yeh, Yeh......Pettifer's a star.....a champ.....a great player......he's not crap......Yeh, right......BS

He's the only guy I know who is a flexi-time footballer........he has a good game when he KNOWS he can beat his opponent. He never struggles against an opponent, then works out how and beats him. He's actually a fair weather footballer.........when it suits him!

And the same deluded clowns think Pettifer is alright.

We don't get enough average to good games out of him a year.
He's been around long enough.

He's like some kid in primary school who soooooo desperately wants to play in the forward line, (and he's only a parasitic flea forward anyway) and when all things go his way, he looks a million bucks.
And they'd be guys like you Sante at Primary School who'd say he was great for playing the odd game. And ignore the times he goes missing.

Pettifer, selfish little forward who drops his head, punches his hand when his greedy little shots miss......Ha.......He's still crap.

"Give it off Pettifer, Give it off" :thumbsd:

(Rather have Lids screaming out of the forward line than 'Greedy' Pettifer)

And don't bring up Pettifer and the B&F..........we are a wooden spoon side, and as the results of many years show, we have a seriously flawed B&F System. When a guy plays a handful of good games a year and rates, then our system is RS.

I reckon your being a bit hard deliberate, I bumped into Pettifer at Smorgies and he was looking pretty sharp.:D

Newman and Pettifer are the only permanent best-22 players we have from the 'lost generation' age bracket. They have to be included in the leadership group if only to stand in for a little while until the baton is passed to the under-25 players.

Was thinking the same thing Rayzor. The new leadership group just shows up the lack of depth created by Frawley in that key 23-27 year old age bracket.

Absolutely agree Sante

Apart from sugar being captain (would like to see Newman/Richo/Brown take the job), I think Newman and Foley are great vice captains, and would both make brilliant captains next year (if they continue their form from this year). Both passionate, both seem to enjoy the tigers, both got talent, I couldn't ask for anymore of a captain.

Saying that, lets see what Johnson does with a list thats got a bit extra experience and has less injured players this year before writing him off, He has the potential to wow some peeps if he can get his head into gear
