So, after 5 wins in a row, we now face a rampant Collingwood, coming off a win against Adelaide in Adelaide. As has been said many times - this game will be a big test for the young cats. Our 5 wins so far have been great - but for a real confidence booster, a win over 3rd place Collingwood would just about make our season (or set us up for the run home).

The young cats have won many admirers of late, but they still dont mix us with the best. A win over Collingwood this week would be a fantastic feeling. Its always great beating the Carring-Bush (as Seindude puts it) no matter where they are on the ladder - but to defeat them when they are on a role, we are the underdogs, and in front of the black and white army at the MCG - that would be heaven!

We are a real chance this week - I feel we ARE capable of defeating Collingwood. I'll be sitting at the top of the Southern Stand cheering the mighty Catters on. I'm looking forward to it.

So, as we do every week, lets get fired up for our upcoming clash with another 'Remember When' thread!

As said before, its always great when you beat Collingwood - and Geelong has had a fantastic record against the maggies of late. We have not lost to them since 1998, and each win since then has been special. In 1999, we had lost 9 in a row, and faced bottom-of-the-ladder Collingwood at Shell Stadium. We trailed by 20 points in the final term, only to grab the lead with about 5 minutes to go thanks to a snap at goal by David Mensch. We managed to hold them out for the remainder of the match for a memorable 2-point win. In 2000, we faced them at the MCG. The Cats had only kicked one goal to half time in dismal conditions, and things looked very grim. But against all odds, the Cats got back into the game thanks to the hard work of Adam Houlihan, Cameron Ling and Carl Steinfort. We changed a 6-goal deficit to just 10 points at 3qtr time - and when Gary Hocking kicked truely to give us the lead late in the final term, it was surely another memorable win. Undoubtably, our best win of 2001 was round 14 against Collingwood. In a packed Colonial Stadium, the Cats started slowly, but went on to play their best football of the year against the highly fancied magpies to come away with a most impressive victory. We will all remember the fantastic work of Clint Bizzell, as he booted 5 goals (or was it 6?) and took a condender for mark of the year. That was a fantastic match - and it was a great feeling being there. It was an all ticketed game, and I was situated in amoungst a whole heap of Collingwood supporters. When Bizzell took that mark, I was the only one in a 3-metre radius that jumped up and cheered. It was great singing the song after that one, and I was on a high for the rest of the week. Boy, I'd love it if we beat 'em again this Saturday - it truely is a fantastic feeling!!

Stretching the memory bank even further, I remember when the AFL experimented with Monday night football way back in 1996. Geelong were to face Collingwood at the MCG that night, and Gary Ablett booted 9 and the Cats won by 10 goals. In 1997 we kicked a woeful 9.26, but still went on to win by 8 points.

Uurgh, so many great Collingwood v Geelong memories - its hard to pick one to cover in detail. I've decided to go back to round 7, 1994, a game that will be remembered for 'that' mark by Gary Ablett!

REMEMBER WHEN - Gary Ablett took 'that' mark over Gary Pert in Geelongs win over Collingwood in round 7, 1994?

The Geelong v Collingwood clash of 1994 was billed as a blockbuster. The Cats had just come off an impressive win over North Melbourne at Kardinia, while the maggies had just come up short by under a kick to the Demons. It was the Mothers Day clash at the MCG, and a crowd of 52,000 were there to witness it.

The Cats burst out of the blocks in the first quarter, booting 7.3.45 to just 1 point. Everyone was kicking goals for the Cats - even defender Tim McGrath who kicked a memorable one. The Cats again outscored the Magpies in the second quarter, kicking 6.6 to a wasteful 4.9.

Things looked good at half time, but in the third quarter, the Magpies mounted a comeback. 8 goals to 2 had Collingwood trailing by only 16 points at the last change, and the Collingwood army was gaining voice.

It needed something special to inspire the Cats. And thats what happened. As Collingwood continued to threaten in the final quarter, the Cats made a rare forward thrust. The ball was passed to David Mensch, who bombed the ball into the forward line. Gary Ablett, who had so far kicked 5 goals, found himself behind Collingwood defender Gary Pert. He had no choice but to try and outjump him. A huge leap gave Ablett a lift into the heavens as he clutched the ball with his right hand and brought it down to the ground with him. "He was so high, he rubbed noses with the Air hostesses!" said teamate Gary Hocking after the game. The mark to Ablett was paid, and as he groggly lined up to take his kick, the crowd was in raptures as the mark was replayed over and over on the giant MCG scoreboard. History books say that even the Collingwood army cheered - but not near us they didn't! I remember being at the match with my brother and sitting in the Olympic stand inamoungst some Collingwood supporters. 'You lost us the state of origin' they kept yelling out (which in fact it was Abletts feats which kept Victoria in the prior weeks state game). The groggy Ablett went back but failed to convert his magnificent mark into 6 points, missing and kicking a behind. But, the great feat was the inspiration the Cats needed, with Gary Hocking goalling soon after to seal the game and hold off the spirited Collingwood fightback by 28 points (18.16.124 v 13.18.96)

It was a memorable win for the Cats, and I'd like them to continue their recent good form against the Pies this Saturday. We ARE capable of beating the woods - and if we do, victory against them will be sweet (as it always is).

This is gonna be a cracker of a game. I cant wait.

GO CATS!
