Can we see him get a defensive post in the starting 22? He was drafted as a mature age player so I'm assuming the coach has earmarked him for a role early on. Thoughts?

Ahh, me young lad Thompson.

I believe that for quite a bit of this year we will see a Thommo at the top and at the bottom of our team on the Footy Show lineup graphic. Will do a lot to shore up our troubled defense and assist in releasing JWS and Firrito more into the midfield.

I think there is a very strong chance of him and Smith playing in the seniors if they put in a strong showing in the pre-season.

Is he tall enough to hold down full back?

Is he quick enough to hold down a flank?

I saw him a few times playing for the VFL and he looked tall enough for a key position at that level but AFL is a different test altogether.

Maybe he's competing with Gibbo and Watt as one of the spare parts men???

Doubt that

Is he tall enough to hold down full back?
At 190cm and 85kg I don't think there's much chance of him playing KPP. That puts him in the Smith size, only smaller with Smith being 191cm and 87kg.
Is he quick enough to hold down a flank?
Yes and this would be my guess as to the role he'll be playing.
I saw him a few times playing for the VFL and he looked tall enough for a key position at that level but AFL is a different test altogether.
He isn't. My thoughts are he'll be competing with Watt for a position. If he has good ball usage and can shut down a man Watt could find himself in strife. At the moment you would assume Watt has first dibs but that could change very quickly.
Maybe he's competing with Gibbo and Watt as one of the spare parts men???
Watt yes but I don't think he'd be taking the place of Gibson. Gibson may only be 190cm, but he's physically better suited to playing on forwards that may be out of his weight division. Thompson is more like Watt and we all saw what happened to Watt when he had to play on gorilla forwards, he got spanked because he wasn't physically capable. I think Thompson witll be competing with Watt, Pratt & Firrito for one of the HBF spots with Watt being the only guy he may possibly dislodge. He's got no chance of dislodging Pratt & Firrito.

Said in the Age that Scotty was your best. How did you guys see his game (no Foxtel for me damn it!)? Was a very handy player in the VFL and looked to be a Matty Scarlett clone on occasions. Zones off his man very well and sets up a lot of forward thrusts. With Egan and Scarlett out ATM he'd be a certain starter at the cattery if you guys didn't beat us to the punch on draft day.

i like him. he looks like a North player and goes about it without fuss and is happy to bang into blokes. seems fairly well composed too. our band of backmen grows!!

He certainly does look handy, and I will be mildly surprised if he doesn't line up in round 1.:thumbsu:

Say, you don't happen to have any handy 193 + sized defenders hidden down sleepy hollow way, by any chance?

Thomo would be a big chance for round 1. Was a dominant midfielder in his junior days, poked a few down my throat. Then grew about 2 feet and took up a key position with South Barwon in the Geelong Footy League and the the Geelong VFL side. Will be a handy player and if can get his composure and confidence up early will be a regular.

Good luck to him too, cause he is a genuinely good bloke and deserves it.

I gave him some drunken encouragement on GF day. For both his sake and the hopes of my DT, I hope he plays.

From the Geelong Advertiser

From South Barwon to the big league, Scott Thompson set for play with North Melbourne

Bradley Green

22Mar08

THIS time last year, Scott Thompson was only worrying about against who and where South Barwon was playing its next practice game.

On Monday, the 21-year-old could be running out for his AFL debut with North Melbourne in front of a crowd of 40,000 at the Telstra Dome.

Thompson has been named in the Kangaroos squad for their opening round clash with Essendon.

While their side won't be finalised until tomorrow, Kangaroos football manager Donald McDonald said Thompson was likely to be playing.

"He's been terrific in the pre-season and it's going to be a big challenge for him because he's never played in this environment before and such a big occasion like the opening round," McDonald said yesterday.

"But he's deserved the right to get this opportunity and I'm sure he'll be out there giving it his best shot. He's got very good composure, whether he's playing at South Barwon with Geelong's VFL side or at North Melbourne. He handles himself very well."

Thompson was drafted by the Kangaroos after playing in Geelong's VFL premiership last season and McDonald said they see him filling a role in their backline.

South Barwon coach Dale Amos said it had been an amazing journey for Thompson from playing GFL footy to the big stage of the AFL.

"He's done a remarkable job and it has been a meteoric rise for him," Amos said.

"Scotty has shown that he can handle all these things in his stride. He played great footy for us at the start of the last year and then played really well for the GFL in the interleague game.

"When he got his opportunity at VFL level, he stepped up again and when stakes were at their highest in the grand final, he played his best game of the year."

Thought Scott did well enough today to hold his place for next week. Would like to see him put on a few more kilos which would add a few more heavies on the backline.

Hold his place? Thought he was very good, showed good composure in some stick situations and seemed to belong

Yes, that frame needs a few kebabs

Why is he not playing, had a goos first up showing round 1, now not even an emergency after being dropped last week?

Betterthenbencoon

Was thinking the same Deledio, Thommo went pretty well on debut in a backline that got pounded. Was stunned he didn't retain his place, and equally stunned he's not running around this week. Where abouts is he playing this week?

So far there is no explaination of why he has disapeaared and is out of sight. His footy has been good, it's either a disipline thing or injury

Knowing Thommo, i highly doubt that it would be a discipline thing. He rarely drinks, and told me he only learnt to drink beer as part of Norths initiation game, called Colonel something, and is one of the most dedicated blokes i've met.

There has to be more to it then North are letting on. His preseason was brilliant, and he certainly wasn't disgraced round 1. Who are North aligned to in the VFL these days? Is it Werribee?

Half the players are aligned to Werribee and the other half are with North Ballarat.

With Dean you will never know what you will get.

Frustrating as a coach sometimes. Especially when hacks like Watt and Brown get a game week in week out no matter how bad they play.

Thompson should be a chance with Gibson out injured but until he mugs Browny for the Golden Pass he might just be a VFL regular.

What if we don't make the finals? Then what?Rubbish. We will make the finals just like Essendon. After they knocked us off in Round 1, Essendon were trying to get their heads around how to manage Bachar Houlihan during Ramadan as he will be fasting for a lot of the finals.

Round 6 v Sydney

8 possessions, 5 marks and 2 tackles.

He was switched around on a few opponents, including the taller Richards, and I am fairly sure he didn't concede a single goal.

Good to see Scott play a lot tighter than he has previously, a good defensive effort.

Round 7 v Adelaide

11 possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles.

As usual looked good with the ball in his hands and poor without it.

The kid Sellar looked like a monster next to Hunter. He is definitely going to benefit from a preseason on the protein shakes and the weights.

Hunter coughed up a lot of goals.

Gibson, Jesse Smith and Sinclair will all be pushing for a return.

If pushed for an answer, i'd say he is very unlikely to play.

Who knows what the coach will do? None of us have a clue.

If a tall defender comes back Hunter will go back to bulk up in the 2s , will need to put on a heap and improve agility , depends how much work he is prepared to do if he is to have more than two years.
