Roos' younger Tarrant time

GUESS one of the first questions to Robbie Tarrant when the Kangaroos introduced their first draft pick yesterday.

Here's the answer: Yep, big brother Chris, now with Fremantle, has been on the phone dispensing advice about the do's and don'ts of AFL life.

"He has done a few silly things that he probably regrets. I've learnt a lot from those things and I probably won't go down the same track as him," Tarrant Jr said at Arden St yesterday.

"He said you're always being watched and just be careful what you do and how you go about it.

"He rang me on the (national draft) day and just said to enjoy the ride, that it will go pretty quick. He said the hard work starts on Monday, which it did, we had a couple of 3km time-trials and stuff."

Tarrant said he was just eight when Chris left their Bendigo home to play in the under-18s competition that eventually led him to Collingwood.

However the brothers became closer while Robbie was a boarder at Xavier College for the past two years.

"He has been a big influence. I've learnt what we should and shouldn't do as AFL footballers. He has tried to talk me through it and calmed me down when I'm a bit stressed. Before the (draft) camp he gave me a few calls and the actual draft day as well," Robbie said.

"I've always wanted to play with my brother at AFL level. Obviously, to play against him would be great as well. I'm just looking at maybe giving him a hip and shoulder or something down the track."

It was a tragic family connection that prompted fellow tall forward Josh Smith to abandon football for two years before being lured back by WAFL club West Perth this season.

Smith, 21, lost a stepbrother and then his brother to illness and accident. He was taken by the Roos at pick 62 on Saturday.

"I went away from footy when I was 17 or 18 for a couple of years. I got back into it this year and, from where I was a year or two ago, it's a pretty big contrast," he said.

"I lost my stepbrother at that time and also my brother this year. That had something to do with it, a bit of a lack of motivation."

At 181cm and 93kg, 18-year-old Port Adelaide Magpies defender Levi Greenwood -- the Roos' second pick at No. 32 -- is being touted as the new Glenn Archer.

"Yeah, they're big shoes to fill if I want to play like him. I'll try the best I can," he said.

Asked his style of play, the new Roo said: "My strength, tough around the ball. Giving a physical presence around the ball, that's what I like to do."

Should also mention that Josh currently has a busted thumb, but is expected to be ready for the pre season matches.

I rekon this guy will rip apart a Nab cup game on a fairly experienced defender, and play seniors close to round 1 onwards

Is this guy the answer to our CHF woes? With an AFL preseason under his belt and the potential he must have shown over west, this guy could shape as a very handy late pick up indeed.

I've had a few chats with Josh and watched him against Frankston.

He started in defense, was mved into the ruck (for spelling the number 1 ruckman), and finsihed in the forwards. He is a beautiful kick of the ball and reads the play very well. His only issues in the game I saw elated to his finger injury (Still 3 weeks to be totally healed). He had trouble tackling with the injured hand, and his overhead marking was obviously affected.

He's a good kid and is really enjoying playing. He is anxious to play well and get a game for North Melbourne, and very well may make his debut some time this season. If he doesn't, it's likely because the club is going too well!!

How is he settling in?

Came from absolutely no where last year to be one of the best WAFL players of the year.

Well he has been kicking a few in the VFL most bags of 2 but i think there was a 3 or a 4 in there too.

Looks to make his debut this week, so fingers crossed

Awesome news.

He lacks a yard of pace which would probably be his weakness but apart from that he's the perfect modern day player. Can play in quite a few positions.

Had a great prelim vs Werribee. Took several strong marks & kicked truely for goal. Being a couple of years older than Hansen & weighing 12 more kilos proved to be a huge advantage for Smith. Wonder what 2009 holds for JS?

Okay, this needs an update - a great VFL GF and a key player in North Ballarat's win - Norm Goss medal for best on the ground, kicked goals, marked strongly, rucked, contested and came back from having stitches in his face mid-game as well. Lots to like.

He's certainly an exciting prospect but I don't think we should get too carried away. He needs to prove his worth at AFL level first.
