Former Collingwood sports scientist Daniel Comerford has been appointed to the position of Head Fitness Coach at Port. No South African rugby coaches then - but he has worked with the All-Blacks (see that morell? ;)). Only 26 years old, and with good experience across a range of sports. I've thought Collingwood have turned out in good physical condition for football over the Malthouse years, so hopefully he'll bring some new thoughts to Port.

The Power has appointed former Collingwood sports scientist Daniel Comerford to the position of Head Fitness Coach. Daniel will replace Darren Burgess, who has joined the Socceroos in a full-time role.

Power General Manager – Football Operations, Peter Rohde said the club was thrilled to acquire someone of Daniels’ calibre to the role.

“We’re really happy with the appointment,” Rohde said. “Daniel comes to us with a really strong sports science and physical education background and a wealth of experience including seven years with the very professional fitness group at Collingwood.

“Dan’s experience and qualification belies his 26 years of age. He has a great work ethic highlighted by his employment and education record which sees him with two bachelor degrees and about to complete his second masters degree.

“We’re confident Dan is ideally suited to take our club forward and will compliment our existing fitness team.”

Daniel has completed two bachelor degrees in Applied Science and Osteopathic Science, a Masters degree in Applied Science and is nearing the competition of his Masters of Business Administration. Daniel has been with Collingwood since 2001, most recently as sports scientist, and had experience in basketball, hockey, rugby with the New Zealand All-Blacks. He also has had five years working as an osteopath and lectured in that field.

Daniel arrived at the club this week and begins work straight away.

Sounds like a nerd rather than a fitness coach :D

I like that we get fitness dudes from different sports it will help us picking up new trends/theory's. THis can only be a good thing for the lads/coaching dept.

We will not be lacking the cutting edge of scientific theory

Yes - but hopefully not too Craigesque.

Not an issue for Port, Natman

Cwaigy is the headjob coach at the cows, so what he says happens, whereas we have a whole coaching panel, including Choco, to ensure we don't stray too far.

Sounds good on paper. I assume he wasn't the head guy at Collingwood but was looking to get the postion and that's why he applied for this job. 26 was the age when the crows bloke left them and took over the Geelong job at the end of 2006.

Not sure how much experience he got with other sports if he was employed by Collingwood since 2001, but a little bit is still better than none.

"So you reckon I should cut down on the carbohydrates and sugar, Daniel? What about spaghetti? That's pasta not carbohydrate, isn't it?'

"Sigh"

"Did I tell you I'm a qualified PE teacher?"

I'm sure he'll do a good job. Great to see the club willing to take a punt on young guys like him and our recruiting guy as well.

I know that guy....

Time to big-note myself.

It was the winter of 2003 (or thereabouts) when I met Dan. I was club captain (thanks very much) and he was coming to the end of uni and wanted to shed a few kilos. He is one of the funniest guys I have ever met. He can also bench quite a few kgs with his barrel chest (got to 180 pounds plus a small child if memory serves - though it was a dodgy bench press). I remember coming back from training in his car for some reason and he overtook a truck faster than anything shouting "are you prepared to die?!" as loud as he could. Good times.

He is the type of guy that wants you to show up at training - you want to train for him just so you can join in the fun. I'm sure your port players will love him.

He started uni at age 17 (so he's a smart fella) but he doesn't have a fierce passion for study alone. I remember him telling me he got a break by being a conditioning something (forget the official title) at collingwood. I even saw him on tv as a runner once when they were down a man.

He was forced to leave the club but we kept in loose contact through my sister - him buying mcdonalds at her place of work. One day the collingwood players had to run the local mcdonalds and she asked one of them if they new dan as she wanted to go there for work experience - they all knew him and laughed at some of the regular jokes he had. that wasnt long ago. now he is with you.

he's smart, just starting to ply his trade and a terrific bloke. I'm sure he will fit right in and lead each session in an upbeat tone. quality signing.
