Feeling a little out of my depth in some of the discussions on topics such as Oasis, punk, well basically anything remotely modern. :)

Mostly I'm into 60s music, most styles. What I'm looking for is suggestions on non-chart recent music that might expand my CD collection a bit. :)

And yes it's a genuine request. ;)

Coldplay - Parachutes.

Supergrass is another great band. Not really heard of much here, unfortunately. Their first album, 'In It for the Money' is great. The self titled 'Supergrass' is my fave. :D

If you're that keen on finding some new music, there's a thread on everyone's favourite picks from the last two months (Top5 June/July), another thread asking people for the last 10 albums they've bought plus there's the "Double Albums" thread. So, three good places to start, and all of it right in front of your nose.

If you want to go back more than five years:
REM
Pulp
Blur
Billy Bragg (especially Mermaid Avenue where he puts music to Woody Guthrie Lyrics)
Regurgitator - Unit (might be a bit too much for you, though)

I also like the Carpenters and Culture Club, so I am a bit weird.
That should qualify me for being a pies supporter.

The first Supergrass album was called "I Should Co Co" and was released in 1995. "In It For The Money" was released in 1997.

You really need to define your tastes before taking advice from these guys :D

My suggestion would be to start listening to radio stations which play different streams of music ie spend a week listening to JJJ and see what you like, then spend a week listening to Nova and see if there's anything there you like etc etc.

Then come back to the boards with a few diff band/singers names and let people tell you what of their stuff is worth buying

If you like folk-rock (The Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash etc) a must-have is Belle & Sebastian - especially "If You're Feeling Sinister".

Absolute Classic - Shinboners reminded me of them.

Since I am a Beach Boys fan and a punk rock fan (they're not as mutually exclusive as you think), why not go for a band that combined elements of both: the Ramones seem perfect. As for one album: Ramones Mania is a great compilation of their best stuff.

Rubbish. Many of the above mentioned are not played on radio these days - even JJJ has a narrower appeal than it has had in the past. More than a year old and they throw it on the scrapheap.

We need a new radio station that plays "Alternative Classics" - The Cure, The Smiths, Nirvana, The Go-Betweens and Iggy Pop all day long. My idea of heaven.

We know what Lioness likes - no harm in giving suggestions. Then she can go to a record store and decide for herself!

Jacs...what you should do is download Win MX or Kazaa (sp?) and just download some stuff that people recommend and once youve heard some of it you can decide if you like it or not, because theres more chance of getting it there than hearing it on the radio!

I didnt mean it quite as literally as you have interpreted hotpie.

I was more referring to the fact that different stations have a different focus on what genres of music they play and used those two stations as an example. Eg you won't hear Destinys Child on JJJ, and likewise you won't hear Tex Perkins on Nova. I could have just as easily used PBS or a dozen other stations as an example

Going out and spending money on CD's of bands you have no idea about apart from a "recommendation" from someone who has no idea of your actual music persuasion is a waste. I'm hardly going to go out and buy a Slayer album on Darkys recommendation even though I've never listened to their stuff.

But maybe thats the accountant coming out in me:confused:

There are things called listening posts at record stores. Nobody was suggesting anybody spend any money off blind suggestions.

In accounting speak this process could be called "due diligence" - something your profession should look up in the dictionary!

Turnabout is fair play, Lioness.

If you go shopping, I think you should pick up Stevie Ray Vaughan. Very good Blues and upbeat at that. You can move your booty to it and....sorry, just having a fantasy. ;) :D

His best two studio albums are 'Texas Flood' and 'Couldn't Stand the Weather.'

There is also a "best of" in two volumes.

I'm not going to push Jimi Hendrix on you. Anyone (who is not a Classical or Country freak) without Led Zeppelin is plain wrong.

Peace,

I am totally the opposite, always willing to listen to fans' recommendations. :) People know basically what kind of music I'm into (Beach Boys, 60s) so yeah I trust their knowledge. I know I can pick Beach Boys albums for people if I know their tastes in music, hello Mooster. ;)
