Taken from my first thread on Spangher. Listed at 193cm and 90kg and wearing the famous number 30, he has big shoes to fill.

Big wraps on this young man from many BF posters, but he hasn't yet been able to put a full year together without injury. Considered possibly the next CHB, once he matures, his job this year is to get a debut game at the AFL level.

Had been waiting to get some photos of Matty before posting here, finally got some today.

Its a shame photos cant show how fast he is and how big his leap is. Watch out for Spangy McGee in 08 peoples.

Here's another picture of Spangher. Good height, good mark and good pace.

I really like Spangher as our future CHB. Seen him in the WAFL and at training and he is certainly looking ready. Hope he gets a chance this season.

Well, let's hope he's taken the first steps to becoming a regular. With the aid of Glass and Hunter it looks like he'll get some chance at playing this year and learning the craft of defending, although as Jako has pointed out he does look a natural defender, has those natural instincts.

certainly looks a pretty natural defender and could be handy on the right matchup this year

Well, congratulations to Matthew Spangher for hanging in there with the injuries he had in his first 2 years and finally getting a debut.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Better still, I have had him in my son's and my dream teams waiting for this occasion.

We trust the debut will be a stunning and stellar success, rebounding off the full back line for 20+ possessions and holding O'Loughlin to bagels!

As someone else said (wce all da way, I think) it'll be good to have the revered number 30 back out on the park!:thumbsu::eek: May it bring a lot of luck.

I presume he is eligible for the Rising Star? In the bag.

He's in my DT too :D

12 possessions, 7 marks and 1 tackle on debut. Great effort, I thought he showed a bit of dash from defence and disposal was very good tonight, which has been one of his criticisms in the past. All up, good debut game, look forward to more of it next week. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Hurt his shoulder on the weekend according to 6PR. No word on how bad. Will find out tomorrow or Wednesday

Out for 3-4 weeks with a shoulder injury. No reconstruction but not good nonetheless

Very shit news. From all reports did fairly OK on Smith which is a lot more than most can say. At least it's not a season injury.

Yep, unlucky for Matthew after playing a decent half on Smith. AFL site says 2-3 weeks, so how many does that really mean? Speedy recovery Matty.

Might line up for East Freo this week if going by the injury list that had him as a test for this current round where East Freo had the bye. I would LOVE to see Spang get an extended run in the seniors. Didn't really deserve to be dropped the first time and certainly has more to offer for the future than Jaymie Graham (And Wilkes IMO)

After a couple of sterling performances in the WAFL Matthew finally gets a chance at his 3rd game, with Glass being injured.

Initially handed the daunting task of going with Riewoldt and had a couple kicked on him in the first quarter. Was then moved to the bench and forward in patches where he showed good attack on the ball, didn't drop his head from being moved and made some good tackles around the midfield. Hopefully gets a chance at his 4th game this weekend to see what he can do against the Dockers!:thumbsu:

I thought he had only one kicked on him, which was more the fault of the runner going through the mark. Riewoldt missed the others. :D

Definitely hope he maintains his place, bit unfair to give so many other youngsters who have been in less impressive WAFL form so many more shots if he gets one game and gone.

You may be right, I have watched the game 4-5 times :D, and I think I thought the last one where he was on the rebound and the ball came back over his head to Riewoldt ended up in a goal? Better go check again.:D

That was after a kick in wasn't it? I remember seeing Spangher going off Riewoldt expecting the ball to be kicked in to a team mate instead of a Saints player like it was. Straight to Riewoldt. Very well may have been a goal in which case I was wrong (although still not his fault :D).

It was at that point in the game I thought it was going to end like most of our recent games. Lucky the fought back.

I'm happy to say, that I have to defer to your observations wce all da way. Matthew did in fact only have 1 kicked in that first quarter.:thumbsu:

he's got the physique to play at the highest level. just needs to fill out a bit. riewoldt looked very dangerous on him and although they goal/s he kicked whilst being marked by spangher weren't spangher's fault, NR did miss some set shots he should've kicked.

But i liked the way he didn't get too put down by Riewoldt's marking and came back later in the game and did a few nice things.

I must admit though he really reminds of Travis Gaspar. Hopefully i'm wrong. We really need at least one of Wilkes, McKenzie or Spangher to take it too another level in 2009.

Well, interesting move on the weekend. Spangher played his 4th game but seemed to play more upfield, drifting back to help the defence.

One passage of play going to the Subi end, where he attacked the ball in the centre and broke a tackle or 2, dished the ball off to someone, which resulted in a goal was an inspiring piece of play. Good to see him attacking the ball! :thumbsu: Hopefully will get more opportunities on the ground in the next few weeks.

OK, there's just not enough love for Matty Spangher going around.

I mean, that hip and shoulder on Young was the first real hip and shoulder I have seen from the Eagles in a long time, even if he did hurt himself in the process. Coming off the wing a bit in the game he certainly attacks the ball and tries to create a path.

Yeah it was fantastic to see someone finally attack the ball the way he was. Ryan Davis and Scott Selwood are two more who are adding that to the team.

Still not happy that he is being played up the ground so much if they see his future as a key defender. I rate him a fair bit higher than Wilkes so it'd be good to see him get his job for the final week.
