View Full Version : Little known gems from the video shop weekly section
There's a whole lot of dross in the weekly section but there are some great movies too. Give us a few good ones that we might not have heard of.
Here's a few.
Gangster No 1. Slick British London gangster movie. Very violent but necessary not gratuitous. Some great performances, Paul Bettany is scary.
The Salton Sea. I usually avoid Val Kilmer films like the plague but this is a good one. It starts off that he's a drug abuser but as the movie unfolds there's a lot more to his character and it turns into a dark thriller. A proper script with a few twists and turns. No cliched car chases and explosions.
K-Pax. Kevin Spacey claims to be an alien who has just arrived on earth. He gets put into a mental institution where amazing things start happen. Spacey as ever is brilliant.
The Missing. A Western. Cate Blanchett's daughter is kidnapped by Apache slave traders. She reluctantly asks her estranged father Tommy Lee Jones to help get her back. Some good action and some good scenes where the two of them get to know each other again.
Love, Honour and Obey. British comedy gangster movie. Jude Law is a wannabe gangster, Ray Winstone is the boss. Very very funny. A great cast and some great lines and scenes. You get the impression they had fun time making it.
GREEDY - A 1994 comedy starring Michael J Fox, Kirk Douglas & the late Phil Hartman, about an extended family shamelessly seeking an inheritence. Very funny, but all but forgotten film.
DROP DEAD GORGEOUS - A black comedy from 1999, starring Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Ellen Barkin & Alison Janney. A very funny satire from set in a small town in Minnesota.
SWIMMING UPSTREAM - High quality Australian drama starring Geoffrey Rush & Judy Davies that failed to capture the attention of audiences when released in 2003.
PETER PAN - This 2003 adaptation of JM Barrie's classic story failed at the cinemas, but is a very good film that was simply overwhelmed by the competition. Up to the Lord of Rings & Chronicles of Narnia standard.
DUPLEX - One of Ben Stiller's lesser known films, this went straight to video in Australia but is still very funny.
LITTLE NICKY - A film despised at the time of its release in 2001 and now almost forgotten, this is so hilariously bad you can't help but enjoy it!
Thanks Emuboy. I've not watched any of those.
There have been a few good Aussie movies that people might have missed. Lantana and Look Both Ways are both excellent.

Fantastic movie!
Not sure I would classify it as a "Little known gem" though - it was nominated for Best Picture Oscar, and won one for writing!
