Murphy2bedabest's side
FB Egan Kennedy Wheeler
HB Cameron Whitten snr Martin
C Mclean Ross Collins
HF McPherson Sandilands Giansiracusa
FF Robbins Rait Kerr
Ruck Schultz Bisset Boyd
Inter Ross Abbey Angus Abbey Samson Reynolds
Ok from the backline Mick Egan played 128 through out the late 70s and 80s and was just a rock at back pocket, Rick Kennedy was the man standing next to Egan during this time and one of our best Full Backs of all time, and played on some of the games great Forwards. Terry Wheeler like Egan was another formidable back pocket throughout the 70s and played 157 games.
Leon Cameron on the Half back, what foot did he kick with the right or left? he just made it look so easy. playing as the setting up running player, Leon could play in the middle if need be. Now it comes to Mr Football himself EJ Whitten CHB in the AFL team of the Century, he could play any where and did on the ball, forward any where i could go on for ever about him:D and 1954 team mate Alan Martin on the other half back, i could not go past him and just makes this backlike so good.
Michael McLean i could't pass up Magic on the Wing and going by his nickname he was a freak! enough said. Premirship player Don Ross was picked in the centre and played 129 games. Denis Collins takes the other wing.
Stephen "super" MacPherson was picked for the hal forward, i was happy to pick up one of my heros who could play any where. Laurie Sandilands @ CHF was the best i could pick at the time, he Captained our club and played 166 games from 1966-1977. Daniel Giansiracua on the other Flank cops alot of flack at 125 games he is a smart player who can kick some goals.
Matty Robbins got as much as he could out off himself and became on of the better small leading forwards. Alan Rait played for us in 1933 and 34 but kicked 62 goals in 19 games but got injured in 1934 and never played in the VFL after. John Kerr was best on in the 154 Grand Final and played 81 games for the dogs.
John Schultz won the 1960 Brownlow and was one of the clubs best Ruckman and a member of the Team of the Century and 5 time B&F.
George Bisset pick as my rover also was named in the Team of the Century.1969 he missed out on the Brownlow by one vote, reported during a round 14 clash against Carlton and as a result was not eligible to receive votes for that match. He had managed over 30 disposals and kicked 6 goals.
I was happy to pick up who has now became my Favorite player in Matty Boyd who i picked as my ruck rover.
on the bench i picked Ross Abbey Angus Abbey Vic Samson and Doug Reynolds, both Angus and Doug played in 1954 and Vic Samson played in 9 grand final and 5 premirships in the VFL as my 2nd ruckman.
THE COON DOGS

My Team:
B: Brad Hardie - William Harris - Greg Eppelstun
HB: Brett Montgomery - Peter Foster - Brian Cordy
C: Ian Bryant - Terry Wallace - Alan Stoneham
HF: Jim Edmond - Chris Grant - Glenn Coleman
F: Ray Huppatz - Bernie Quinlan - Les Bamblett
R: Gary Dempsey - Tony McGuinness - Geoff Jennings
I: Ian Hampshire - Merv Hobbs - Ian Morrison - Colin Dell
I’m very happy with this team, would love to watch them play.
There’s just something about Brad Hardie, his Brownlow Season in 1985 was one of the best I have ever seen. Blazing runs down the ground, long sleeves, bright red hair, guaranteed vote getters.
I needed a fullback & was fortunate enough to secure William ‘Ching’ Harris who made his debut in 1869 & served the club for 20 years, winning 5 VFA Premierships. He was a fearless defender who never took a backwards step.
A Victorian representative in 1991 is my other back pocket. Greg Eppelstun, from Won Wron Woodside played 102 games in the late 80’s/early 90’s & actually kicked 1 goal, but was a very dour defender.
Such was Brett Montgomery’s versatility I could have picked him in my forward line. Fantastic servant of the club during his two stints with us. One of the best marks for his size.
My favourite all time Bulldog & I was absolutely thrilled to secure Peter Foster as my CHB. A late developer who played & tamed some of the game’s greats. A lovely mark & thumping left foot kick.
In my view Brian Cordy flew below the radar with many people. I thought he was terrific & like so many of his time, was a vital cog in 1985.
A six time Victorian representative in Ian Bryant was a dead set monty to be picked up to play on the wing. Played 160 games for the club after being recruited from the Footscray District & worked his way up through the ranks from the fourths.
When I saw Terry Wallace play for Hawthorn, I couldn’t see how he would get three votes in many games. I was up in the old Social Club & was fortunate enough to watch his first training run with us in 1988. Watching him play in red, white & blue, the penny dropped & it was easy to see what others actually saw. Easy to see how he earned his nickname; Plough.
What enormous shoes to fill for the young kid recruited from Sunshine. ‘Here you go son, you can wear Teddy’s #3.’ Alan Stoneham debuted as a 16 year old in 1972 & played 128 games for the club & also wore the Big V.
Jim Edmond was possibly the best mark for his size I have ever seen, very strong overhead. A great leader & I was shattered when he left after our wonderful 1985 season where he led from the front as our captain.
I can still remember Chris Grant’s debut against St.Kilda in round 1, 1990. He kicked 3 that day & became the youngest player to kick 50 goals. Not only a champion on the field, more importantly he was & still is a champion person. Should have had 2 Brownlow Medals too, but he’s not the sort of bloke who would complain or begrudge the recipients in those years.
A very underrated player in Glenn Coleman is my other HFF. He did much of the donkey work in Chris Grant’s formative years & in my view was a beautiful foil for him, with long searching leads up to the wing.
Ray Huppatz kicked 76 goals in 64 games for the Bulldogs after coming across from SA at the age of 25. Represented both SA & Victoria.
Probably the best kick of a football to ever play the game. Was it any wonder Bernie Quinlan was known as ‘Superboot’? It was poetry in motion watching Bernie Quinlan play the game, he made it look just so easy.
Les ‘Lally’ Bamblett was quick in every sense of the word. Quick to appear on the scene, quick to disappear into obscurity & ever quicker on the field if he sniffed a goal. A prototype for Aaron Davey. What a season he had in 1985!
Probably the best player I have ever seen play for the Bulldogs is Gary Dempsey! A big statement, but it’s just how I feel, so for me it was no contest when it came to selecting a ruckman. 1975 Brownlow Medalist & 6 time club B & F winner, including 5 in a row from 1973-77, not only a great tap ruckman, but had the ability to drop back fill a hole & use his height to drag down mark after mark, even taking one with an arm either side of a goal post!
One of the most penetrating left footers to play for us. Tony McGuinness could run all day & usually burnt taggers off with his stamina. Won a B & F in 1987. A great finisher.
Geoff Jennings’ career would have been so much better were it not for the chronic hamstring strains he suffered. Recruited for Traralgon, he had blistering speed & he was captain of the club, but retired at the age of 28 due to his injuries.
I needed a second ruckman in my side, fortunately Ian ‘Bluey’ Hampshire was available. No points for style & grace, but bucket loads in spades for honest endeavour. Was runner up in the B & F in 1979.
Couldn’t believe it when I realised Merv Hobbs was still available. Came from the same town as Chris Grant in Daylesford & is most famous for his mark in the 1961 Preliminary Final (oddly enough the photographer had been on his way to a wedding & stopped by on the way to let his son experience the atmosphere).
I thought Ian Morrison was another player who flew under the radar. Played 113 games through the 1970’s & was a terrific mark.
Couldn’t overlook Colin ‘Ding-Dong’ Dell for my last spot (just ahead of Michael Ford). An honest defender who took an absolute specky against Collingwood at Victoria Park in about 1975.
