View Full Version : Poor effort by our supporters after loss!

I know i am not going to win any friends with this post but i have to voice my dissapointment in how the Essendon supporters (as a collective group) on BF have handled the loss to St Kilda.
Their has been two or three threads on the so called discraceful umpiring, calls for players heads to role and never put on the jumper again and the slamming of a number of players.
All of this because we lost a practise match to a very very good team by 3 points.
I would hate to think how our supporters act during the real season in matches that count for premiership points.
Well done to St Kilda and well done to the Dons for fighting the game out even though they were outplayed for almost all of the night. Thumbs down to us sore losers.

We will never all agree on everything..its just human nature:)

I'm all for that but i was also taught how to be a good sport and gracious in defeat. :thumbsu:
I agree also.
Same thing happened last year when we lost to Geelong and a number of members posted on the main board slamming Geelong claiming them lucky, they only won because of our injuries and umpiring.
Sure the umpiring was ordinary but whining about it does nothing and you sound like a bunch of immature brats and bad sportsman, which then rubs off on the rest of Essendon supporters.
Time for some to grow up.
You only have to listen to the radio today to hear the talkback callers ring in and say how disgraceful our "so called" supporters were last night at the actual match.
Strange I actually never come across this and I last night sat Level 2 for the first half and moved to Level 1 for the second.
Could hear some quite fired up people on the train on the way home though (and I can't blame them).
Great to see passionate fans - abusive/stupid fans NO

I have not commented on the umpires. They where ordinary but that is footy. Some weeks you are on the good end and some weeks you are on the bad end.
As far as making comment on players you don't get it do you. It was not about the loss or about it being a NAB Cup game or a regular season game. It was about falling back into the BS habits that have made us a bad side over the last 4 years. If we had of lost by 4 goals but players showed they had turned the corner and where willing to do more of the small things i would have been happy. The most annoying thing is the fact that the young blokes will shepherd and block while the older blokes who should know better cruise around looking for cheap stats.
The result tonight was pretty much irrelivent. What needed to happen was players to continue improving on the areas that where talked about all pre season. That didnt happen in last nights game.
Its not about being a sore loser. It is about being pissed off that we can just fall back to the same lazy habits year after year after year.

Nothing wrong with being passionate and getting fired up at the footy but once the game is done and dusted suck it up and give credit to the winners. I think i learnt that in under 10's when our coach abused us for complaining to the umpires after losing a game by 5 points with a dodgy decision late in the game.

I am surprised because i am a BF nooby and up till last night i have been really impressed by our supporters as a whole. You go onto other boards and often see all sort of BS threads talking up themselves and bagging the heck out of everyone else but our board seems laid back and level headed for the most part. That was until after last nights loss of course. :thumbsd:

Those "Supporters" ringing up were probably the ones who were watching from the comfort of their living rooms.
Those "Supporters" ringing up were probably the ones who were watching from the comfort of their living rooms.
no they were St Kilda fans who were abused, had alcohol, ice etc thrown at them down their end of the ground where their cheersquad sat (Asile 26ish).
one guy said majority of the culprits were 16-18yr old drunks who weren't interested in the footy and couldn't have cared less if they had been thrown out.
some were sitting up on Level 2 above their cheersquad throwing things down onto them.
This is the word from the various callers ringing in, nothing I have seen for myself.
Do I believe it? hmmmmm don't know but have seen it at other sporting events. Just hope they weren't wearing Essendon clothing and embarassing the clubs name.

I agree 100% .
Saints tackled harder and held onto their tackles , they were in front of the man , first to the ball most times and hardly gave away free kicks .
The Bombers i hope learnt a good lesson from tonight.Above all that , the Saints were mentally tougher and were not scared to go and do the hard things to win .

I need to clarify... if you are losing on the field you start a fight there or hurt the opposition any way possible.
No need to be aggressive off the field as a supporter.
For every Pat Rafter I can give you examples of 100's of champions that were sore losers - Lethal, Carey, Ali, Zidane

Pev shouldn't play again. We can't afford to have both him, JJ and Watson in the same team. Watson's miles ahead, and while JJ isn't as far ahead as Watson, he provides a much higher skill level and a lot more toughness than Pev. So at the moment, no, Pev shouldn't play again.

not just after a loss..
during the game, a group of (i reckon) 15/16 yo's (essendon supporters) were sitting behind the goals on level 2 behind the saints cheersquad and they were throwing stuff off the balcony thing and swearing all match.
and then at the end of the game some idiot sitting a couple of rows behind me, decided he would throw a half-full bottle of gatorade. not sure what he was aiming for, but luckily it didnt clock anyone in the head.

I don't condone any of this behavior but I reckon you'll see a lot more of it as people cannot tolerate that rules and umpiring anymore.
I posted the thread about the poor umpiring. I didnt blame the umpires for the loss. In fact I think the saints played very well and probably deserved to win, although any loss by a kick is unlucky. I agree that we were undisciplined and gave many frees away.
I was angry at what I thought was poor umpiring with many soft decisions going against us but few for us. I wanted to know whether it was just me or did other fans think we suffered some pretty ordinary decisions.
Obviously that sort of thread is unacceptable on BF. I certainly won't post another.

Then forgive me for dismissing your opinion re: Pev as meaningless. He was rubbish and every time he got the ball every single supporter at the ground cringed. I laughed when I saw the stats and saw that Pev was credited with zero clangers. His kicking's not good enough, he's too slow, he was constantly in the wrong position on the ground, and had no idea what he was meant to be doing. We have to choose between him and JJ and JJ is absolutely miles ahead.
EDIT: Pevs skills have IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY? Good god, he had a shot at goal at one point in the 2nd term that was without question the worst kick I've ever seen in the history of existence. His skills are shot.

I agree that being at the ground gives you a better perspective into alot of things but on tv you can still clearly see if a play hits or misses a target. He had a couple of dodgy disposals but other than that he did not miss a target. I am actually a critic of Pevs and JJ's for that matter but i'm not going to bag a player out for the sake of it. I think we will have to agree to disagree as there is no way in the world you will ever get me to agree that JJs form in this NAB cup has been better than Pevs. Cheers.
EDIT: I am also surprised that a guy that couldn't hit a target, was too slow, had no idea what he was doing, was constantly in the wrong positions and had the worst shot for goal in the history of the game could be named in Essendons best couple of players in most publications.

He is every week... purely because of the number of possessions, quality doesn't come into it. I'd prefer if someone else forced peverill out of the team that has nothing to do with losing though, that's just wanting improvement from younger players.

YOu must be VERY observant.
I was at the game, no one near me cringed when Pev had possession. With the exeption of the drop kick, he played well enough. There was in fact alot of love for Pev near where I was sitting at the Bombers supporter group end.
I wouldsuggest your own hatred of Pev severely corrupts your perception of how he played. You judge him in the worst possible light right of the bat. You saud it yourself, Zero clangers!

But that isn't what you said was it?
I have bolded the above points you made about him and they are nothing like what you said second time around.
I can understand people having concerns about him and there is no doubt he will not be a part of our next premiership tilt but his skills have improved a lot so far this pre season.
Sure he has and will make some clangers, but name a player in our team that doesn't.
Unfortunately he is being bagged by many people here on their pre conceived ideas of him and not what he actually is providing.
He is also playing in a role unfamiliar to him and while not starring, he has been solid so far and his skills have been quite good.
Big Blow Hard summed it up very well and while it may not be hatred it is a pre conceived idea, as it couldn't be anything else as he has been quite good so far.

Rubbish he is every week. He is when he deserves to be. Effectively what you are saying is that basically every media expert got it terribly wrong but a few irrate Essendon supporters on BF got it right and that he was actually so bad that he shouldn't play for the club ever again.
Merv hit the nail on the head. Too many people have a pre concieved idea about Pev and are not prepared to judge him on his performances. I also want to see the next wave of young Bombers coming through our ranks but lets not hang a guy in the process.
His form has been pretty good and i would be extremely surprised if he is not named come round one.

Well done to St Kilda and well done to the Dons for fighting the game out even though they were outplayed for almost all of the night. Thumbs down to us sore losers.
Id say you would find that most of the complaining wouldnt have happened if it were a real match for points. I know that if it werent a practice match i wouldnt have started a thread about it. The same goes for the booing the umpires directly after the final siren.

I was watching the game with 8 mates, 3 of them essendon, 4 of them random teams and 1 poor bugger was saints. It's pre-season so everyone was pretty keen to watch some footy. Everyone said the umpiring was pathetic. I'm not even saying we had the raw end. It was just far too critical, they cant afford to be that critical when they cant see all angles.
Maybe they need to have 14 different camera angles and have 14 umpires in the stands. They can blow a huge siren whenever a free kick is awarded and a big light will say which team gets the free.

Most weeks we've had the man running past which is key to making a player with low skills worthwhile. Pev can make the simple pass, it's threading the proverbial eye to spot up a man 2-on-1 to advantage that he struggles with. He's been used in recent seasons as that sort of player, which he isn't
