View Full Version : Player/Coaches contracts - Are we too conservative?

1) Neil Craig - Should we give him a 3 year contract now? IMO we should. Yeah he has his weaknesses - don't all coaches (just look at the D-Cuped Neanderthal from down the road) - but I think he is still the best man for the job.
His win loss ratio is extraordinary, even before you take into account the quality of the list he has had to work with. I don't see any other likely candidates. Give Craigy 3 years to build his own team from scratch and see how he goes. If he does a Wallace and we stagnate or even go backwards then look at moving him on.
2) Player Contracts - Forget our painful policy of waiting until the end of the year to discuss contracts. Given our recent history, it would be dangerous and foolish if the club continues on with this practise. Promising interstate youngsters need to be signed now. By the start of the season proper, the likes of Knights, VB, Maric, Tippett, Douglas, Griffen, Dangerfield and McKay must all be signed up until the end of 2010.
Thoughts.
I agree, I would like to see a bit of proactivity in regards to keeping players signed up!

Agree with you.
Show the young players some loyalty and make them know they are wanted.
And give Craigy another extension - no question either.
Yes way too conservative IMO, off the field we tend to be too soft in relation to trading and letting plays walk out on the club. I think we have a reputation of being way too fair and we never seem to push the envelope as far as the rules go. We dont give a perception of doing enough to try to keep our players, I see Port have already secured some of their players that are coming out of contract at the end of the year. We tend to say well sign if you want, but if you want to go thats fine also we wont stop you.

Agree
I would like to see our promising young talent signed up long term during the year, because when your playing with your friends your a lot less homesick then when you see people asking for trades and are with family in the off season.
I like our policy regarding older players.
1 year contracts for player 30 + and no multi years into 30+
But youth needs to be here.
Get Tippett signed for 3-4 before Southport becomes a team.
PS Dimetriou is an idiot
Tasmania deserves a footy team more than West Sydney. Stop trying to steal rugbys fans just because they are rugbys fans.

Its not as one sided as people like to think. We can't force a player to sign for 5 years if he is only looking for a 2 year deal! The negotiations work each way. I think we are pretty proactive in terms of signing draftees to longer deals. For example both Tippett and van Berlo initially signed 3 year deals even though its a common practice in AFL for draftees to signs 2 year deals (a league minimum).
The club has in the past wanted to secure players on longer term deals but the players themselves opted for shorter deals. A couple of years ago the club wanted to sign Reilly up for 3 years but he only wanted 2. After his 2 years were up he happily signed another contract. Similarly, IIRC, the club wanted to secure Meesen to a 3 year deal but he only wanted 1 year and left for Melbourne after that contract expired.
Its all well and good for people to say the club should offer long term deals but its not just up to the club to sign those deals. The players have a MUCH bigger say in how long they want to sign for due to a number of reasons.
As for Craig, didn't the club initially sign him to a 3 year deal only to reconstruct that contract half way through his 2nd year to give him a better pay AND extend the deal by another 2 years to the end of 2009 season?! I am pretty sure we did ;)

wow thats a pretty stupid comment IMO and not just because im a PAFC supporter.
he is well acknowledged as one of the best coaches in the league, and has a considerable less amount of faults than your "triathalon" coach.

Pity he can't figure out how to beat us and our "triathlon" coach then....
back to the port board please.

Williams took them to two Grand Finals and a premiership.
Put all bias aside and be honest.
If you had to pick a coach, who would you pick, Williams or NC.

NC - as someone who has done some coaching in their life. I listen carefully to other coaches in different sports to help me in my own coaching.
Mark Williams, like Terry Wallace, has never inspired me and in fact for some reason he really gets my back up with his interviews. He gives off very limited information about his philosophies. This being a very small town, I have heard a few things about treatment of players and taking into account natural bias from certain sources, I am inclined to believe there is a fair bit of smoke about this information and I am not impressed by what I have been told.
After watching the head to head games between Craig and Williams and taking into account the accusations that Craig doesn't have a plan B let alone a plan C, I am amazed that not many have picked up that Williams seem to has only two plans to play against Adelaide. Plan A - play the normal Power game plan and when that inevitably doesn't work, Plan B - Flood.
All kudos for getting Port into the GF last year, but they had a dream run with injuries and opponents and look at the result of game.
I will always chose Craig over Williams purely for what Craig has been able to do with the demoralised list he received from Ayres.

Like I said, all coaches have their weaknesses. Williams is a good coach (the finals choking record prevents him from being classed a great coach) but there's no denying as a human being he's a bottom feeder.
BTW to answer your question, strictly as a coach, I would prefer NC. If he had Ports exceptional list between 2001-2004 he would have won at least 1 premiership.
have you forgotten this teensy lil detail, about it taking 2 to tango?

For mine, id like to actually know the contract status of most of these fellas... its hard to say where we're at in terms of keeping our list together.

Fair enough. But it would be nice if we put on our dancing shoes abit earlier than the 1st of October.

NC for me. What he has done in previous years with our ageing list is remarkable. Not that Chocco hasnt been exceptional aswell, but Neil Craig is made of all the right stuff. And he is an Adelaide man through and through and had stated he will be a one club coach. Unlike Chocco. NC for me over all other 15 coaches including Paul Roos

I would like to see NC offered a 2 year extension, this would extend his current agreement until the end of 2011 season
It's critical that VB, Knights, Maric, Griffen, MacKay, Tippett and Radar are all locked away for the next 3 years
Hopefully Dangerfield, Walker and Jacky have already signed 3 year deals
Symes and Sellar should be ok as they are SA boys and were crow fans as kids
I am happy for Cook, Otten, Kite and Armstrong to be assessed towards the end of 2009
Channel 10 just implied that the Crows are beginning negotiations with Rutten and Porplyzia.
Are they taking notice of this thread? :p ;)

Rutten and Tippett wasnt it?
Yes, its clearly this thread.
Obviously the club wouldnt want to resign those players without an internet outcry telling them to first.

Great topic! Most crows supporters would agree with you 100%. Sign up NC straight away and all the youngsters you spoke off aswell. If we are going to draft interstaters, lets keep the good ones by all means required. VB, Knights, Tippett, Radar MUST be lifelong Crows, Make it happen. As for debating who is better out of NC and Chocco, who really cares. Id take NC anyday and Im sure the toothless and shoeless love Chocco.:)

It would be unfair to not let Craigy see out his "rebuilding" phase. He needs to be here for the next 3-5 years.
I would love all our key players see out their careers here: RUTTEN (Give him as many years contract as he wants!), Thompson, Rielly, VB, Knights, Bock, Stiffy, Porplyzia. There's a chance we'll lose one of them at some point though, unfortunately.

How much longer does he have to run on his contract?
I heard from albeit an unreliable source today, who had spoken to him and the conversation went along the lines of him wanting to finish his career in Melbourne due the Mrs family being over there  I dont want to start uneccessary rumours regarding the future of our players but thought id share what id heard

That rumour was floated around on this board at one stage last year. Nothing happened when it came to trade week. Seems there isn't much substance to this particular rumour.

You cant judge NC finals effort untill he takes a fully fit side into the finals.
05 against saints we had no Roo [own fault i know] no Bock so Trent had to go back and i know it was only one player but that all it takes to buggar up the whole structre.
06 we had big troubles to say the least.
Last year Willy took a fully fit side into the GF except Wilson and in 02 03 he went into the finals with the side they had all year.
Since NC has taken over we are 6/1 with the little brother and the one we lost we had 13 shots in the 1st term kicked 3-8 and 2 on the full should really be 7-0 so for what ever reason they had the wood on us before NC now we have the wood on them.

My cousin knows him and played under age footy with him he told me he sees himself going back over the border AFTER his footy is career is over

Of all the people we should be worried about leaving, someone who specifically traded to us in Adelaide is pretty low on the list id think.
