Just as long as there are no more bloody injuries. Rest the entire freakin' team if need be and play the coaching staff.

I might head home for it...the folks still live in Shepparton.

One thing worries me though, there is very little difference in the hardness of the field versus, oh...the road. Not a hell of a lot of rain in Shepparton for a while now. So hopefully we rotate the players fairly often...which of course we can do now that there's normal interchange rules again.

Deakin Reserve in Shepp is in great nick - no need to worry about the hardness of the ground. Holds about 8-10K when full and I'd expect close to that. Heading there with my two boys and I'll try and give you a match report afterwards.

Hoping to take some pics and write up a summary of each players game. Nothing too analytical though, as it's NAb challenge and means diddly squat.

hahaha Greensy under 14s.

Played a few games for Greensy under 11s before moving suburbs. The week after I left the club was in the paper for "UGLY PARENTS". They mean parental behaviour, but I can vouch for the average Greensborough resident being a little on the rough side :p

Yes Galon, we were.

Unfortunately I didn't account for a few things:

Wind blowing in a big dirty circle.
Sydney playing B side players at an A grade level
Us playing our kids in the midfield for 90% of the game
Franklin not touching the ball

Shepp News

Young star Lance ``Buddy'' Franklin will be starting in tonight's practice match against Collingwood at Deakin Reserve, Hawthorn assistant coach Todd Viney confirmed yesterday.
Franklin will take centre stage as the Hawks use tonight's game to finalise their preparations for round one.

``I think we'll go in with as strong a line-up as we can, without risking anyone with niggling injuries,'' Viney said.

``This is our last hit-out before round one and we're keen to get some game time into players like Trent Croad, Campbell Brown, Brent Guerra, Rick Ladson, Jarryd Roughead and Ben McGlynn.

``Both teams will be looking for a good performance from the match, so they can get some confidence and build momentum going into the season.''

The Hawks will also give fledgling key forwards Mitch Thorp and Beau Dowler their first runs of the year.

``We're pretty keen to give those guys an opportunity,'' Viney said.

``They've both had injuries during the pre-season and haven't had the chance to get out on the park yet.

``They were both taken with high draft picks and we've got pretty high hopes for both of them.''

Viney, who coached Moama for two years before accepting the Hawthorn gig at the end of the 2004 season, said the club was happy with its pre-season.

``We've had three solid games so far, Sydney put enormous pressure on you, and we got through that one,'' he said.

``We played really well for the first half against Carlton and then gave our younger guys some game time, and came up against a fit and firing Adelaide, who really pressure you through the middle of the ground.

``It will stand us in good stead for the season.''

Looks like Buddy will be out there tonight.

Fledgling just means young bird who has recently acquired it's flight feathers. So it's pretty appropiate referring to young Hawks players who have played only a handful of games at best and comparing them to the AFL level.

Most writers use the term for all the teams with birds as their symbol n- Crows, Magpies, Swans, etc

It also means a young or inexperienced person. So i guess people can use it as a put down, but generally not as there's far better words to use.

Anyway, if you imagine most birds taking flight they do kind of look like they're struggling anyway. :)

Just got back from the game.

Brown the only bloke unaccounted for in my books ( rolled ankle so I hear).

A pretty good game to watch, we actually went into the game looking pretty strong.

I won't go into positions much, more just the output of the squad and any observations I made.

For the most part Dowler and Thorp played deep in the forward 50 together. Dowler took a couple of nice grabs and presented well. Same with Thorp who, at one point ran back with the flight of the ball into the goal square only to be spoilt be another player running at him. Great stuff.
Good signs from both players. Can't take much from their first hitout, but I love Thorp.

Roughie. Can't help but love the big fella. Cult hero. Flew for the big ones a couple of times. Nothing special about his game but he presented well and kicked a couple.

Tuck was very impressive. His ability to get in and out of a pack is increasing and at times he was used as a good link player thru the middle of the ground. His tenacity at the ball is great also.

McGlynn will be better for the run. Was pretty solid all around the ground and wearing the number 5.

Morton finds the ball alot and is quite good by foot, although he has a tendancy to get under his kicks. Good output from him tonight though. Took some good grabs and was productive.

Buddy started on a wing in the last but played predominantly at CHF. Took a great one hander on the lead at one point, only to stray the kick.
He is massive, and the crowd love him. Kicked one banana from deep in the pocket, and another from outside fifty, on the right hand boundary. Another from in the goal square after receiving a handball, and being on the end of his good work and run from the wing. Got the easy goal, but worked hard to be there.

Rioli? I was talking about this with my mate after the game and I'm quite sure Cyril sees things in matrix like bullet-time. He gets his hands on the ball and it's like everything turns to stone. Such a great player to watch and can't help but be excited by him.
At one stage he was being manned by Tyson Goldsack and tha ball was dumped in long to Roughead in the square, with in two seconds Cyril had totally lost Goldsack and was standing dead centre, five metres in front of where Roughead was to attempt the mark. The ball hits the deck, Rioli dances around a tackle, handball back to Roughead.....Goal.
Wasn't the first time I saw him hit a pack that had emerged in the forward 50 for the night. And he'll only get better at this.

Birchall was very sound as usual. Some good marks and as always, great run out of defence, started on Medhurst while Brown took Cloke. Thought Birch would be a better match up, but it never eventuated.

Which brings me to Murphy, he came on after Brown rolled the ankle and did a fairly decent job on Cloke. I'm not a big fan of Murphy, don't get me wrong I want to believe he can make it, but I sometimes wonder. However he was very good tonight. After he came on and was put onto cloke he did a fair job of keeping cloke up the ground and spoilt when possible.

Ladson gave us great run all night, even pushing forward to kick a goal at one point early on. his disposal is top notch.

Campbell was in everything early, but I didn't notice him much as the game went on.

Bateman was back to his hard running best. Still a bit costly by foot, but his link up thru the guts is something we need.

Hodge. Party tricks in the last. Pushing forward for a bit of a speccy and a goal. Just his usual self. Does as he pleases. Cruises around. Noticed he gave to Ryce Shaw with every chance he got. Love it.

Croady dropped two absolute gimmies off the chest but other than that he did his part and was ok in the back half.

Stewy Dew, solid. Well what else could he be? But he looks trim....for what he was. Uses the ball well, continuously put us into attack.

Gilham, Guerra had solid games. Young...please clarko...move him up the ground. Gets caught in the headlights too much. Would rather see him running thru the middle delivering long. Which he did on occasion, but there were times when he was defensive side of the centre and just didnlt look comfortable. I'm still a fan though.

Wrapping up, Clarke, Sewell, Osborne all made it thru unscathed. Good performances by all. Clarke and Sewell in particular.

Had to stand next to one Magpie supporter who constantly bleated whenever Collingwoood got a goal, and another one in front of me who must've said 'that wasn't 25 metres' for about 99% of each kick made during the game.

Got a few under the belt and I can't be stuffed trying to downsize the pics right now...will do tomorrow...and probably add more. Right now I'm hitting the pub to tell anyone who'll listen about how bloody good Rioli and Franklin are.

Good report there Galon. Summed it all up nicely.

Thorp and Dowler were both looking in excellent condition so if they get a chance for a bit more match time hopefully they can work into a bit of form.

Have been very impressed with Morton through the preseason. Uses his head and works his way into good position for contests. Like his chances for a guernsey in round 1.

Tuck, Rioli, Morton and Murphy continuing to impress!

From what I can tell from The Age report - they had a full strength team except for J Fraser. A few of their players having their first run for the season.

We were without Mitchell, Lewis and Mark Williams.

I'm happy with the result. Clarko is continuing to give the youngies a real shot. Gotta keep in mind that Collingwood are one of the stronger sides of the comp - so not a bad show. Good to see buddy bag a few against the pies - from memory he hasn't done so well against them in the past.

I'm a big wrap for Thorp but I don't think he's going to make an impact this season. Still seems to be behind in match fitness. Rioli is an excitement machine, really happy with how he has come on and will fit nicely into the forward line.

For mine, Rioli, Tuck, Murphy, Dew and Clarke in for Round 1. Morton might also be a chance, they seem to be playing him a fair bit.

Dowler and Thorp definitely look exciting for your future. Very athletic and skillful with the ball, they got to a lot of contests. Equally impressive for us was Nathan Brown who was rarely beaten in the air against those two. Brown vs. Thorp/Dowler was great to watch for both teams. Croad looked very flat, and kind of unfit, probably spent a half on Rocca while Gilham spent the other half on Rocca. Gilham is one of the most underrated players in the competition, and while Rocca had a good game, when you expected Rocca to kill Gilham (and 90% of players) in one on one contested mark situations he didn't.

Unless someone else was wearing #5, Mitchell was quite clearly being rested. Spent about 1 quarter resting in the forward line (doing very little) and about half a quarter in the middle. It could have been someone as he didn't stand out to me as Mitchell but I'm pretty sure that in Franklin's interview when he said he was rested he meant he played very little of the game.

What a boring thread. We concede six goals in the last quarter to lose a game against a previously winless Collingwood and everyone's as happy as Larry. I DEMAND A WITCH HUNT!!!

Surely someone was standing near a few of those Pie goals? I want his head on a stick! Rocca kicked three? Who's to blame? I want a scapegoat! We concede the most goals so far this preseason and not a single call for accountability? Talk about condoning mediocrity.

Yes, I'm kidding. Thanks for the report Galon.
