View Full Version : How close were we to our best side v Hawks?

Who else do we have coming back in?

Rotations wise, I think Craig did do a bit of experimenting.

However, in terms of personnel, would I be right in saying the side that played the Hawks (and the Saints this week) would just about be the side that plays in Round 1?

Massie perhaps - or is he injured?

Our side looked fairly settled on the weekend with the exception of the rucks who are all still auditioning for a spot in the absence of Biglands. Tippett probably looks the best of them but Maric looks like he has gone backwards: he looked slow and clumsy on saturday night.

Douglas looks like he is finally ready to become a regular in the 22 this year and Porps looks a lot fitter and faster than he did a year ago.

Gill and Hentschel (if he comes good) will probably come into the 22 at the expense of Moran and one of Griffin/Maric/Sellar.

Hentschel and Gill to come in, basically.

Also, there were a couple of players to "double up" in the game against Hawks ... basically two players played one position for half the game each. Douglas and MacKay was one such pair, and Griffin and Maric was another.

So I'd have MacKay and Griffin play a whole game for round 1, and I'd consider Gill in place of Sellar if Gill was fit. Hentschel ... not until round 6 or so.

sorry what game were you watching I thought maric was good all the game he played:confused:

I agree that Douglas was more comfortable but still could do with some more confidence and i would doubt Hentshel would be straight in Round 1.
Porps is a gun and I thought both Vince and Mackay (when playing) were good aswell.

Sellar to miss and Tippet to play as ruck backup and forward. Id love Sellar to play but I think his last 2 games have been just ok, and Tippet may be more versatile and be able to have more of an impact at this stage.

Maric's first half was very good

IMO, Douglas still needs to do more, his disposal does not hold up under pressure

I do not believe we will see Gill before round 3, we wont see Hentchel in the tri colours until mid season

cant see hentschel playing AFL footy till after the midseason break tbh

1. his knee still appears to be giving him some trouble
2. the long time off from footy combined with the knee injury means he may suffer other soft tissue injuries indirectly or directly related to the knee
3. th club being extra cautious after biglands going down again
4. it appears his fitness levels have dropped a considerable amount

apparently he is 4-6 weeks away from playing, than he would require at least 4-6 weeks with WWT in the sanfl

If i were a selector, Gill, Hentschel and Massie would be in the 22 when fit.

Doesn't sound like a lot of players but considering what those 3 bring to the table ('skill set' in Craigy's words), we are still a good 15-20% off our best possible team performance imo.

Issue with Massie is he plays as our 3rd tall defender, now Bassett is back, and with the improvement of Stevens, not to mention the desire to play Moran as a tall defender, IMO Massie has dropped in the pecking order

Hopefully that doesn't turn into the "Matthew Bode 2-3 weeks" syndrome that ends up lasting all season.

Its pretty obvious massie is on the outer with the emergence of the younger blokes Neil doesnt have him in our best 26 currently.

I think Massie still has a spot in this team - if Doughty and Shirley do, so does Massie! ;)

I think Craig has played so many talls over the NAB Cup, something that won't happen on a regular basis over the season proper one would think. Sellar needs more development, but he could pinch hit if needed. Hentschell won't play before mid-season (if at all) you wouldn't think. I think Gill/Tippett might fight for a forward spot (when Gill is fit to play). Not sure where Moran fits in. Symes has shown enough to play, as has Douglas, Vince and Mackay, but you can't play them all! It's actually a nice position to be in for a change!
