View Full Version : Could we play Campbell up forward?
I think we should put the big boy up forward. Would make it even more super the forward line in Franklin, WIlliams, Boyle, Roughead and Rioli. We have done it a few times and he can take a grab but needs to learn how to follow through with his kicking. I would love to see him up forward him or Taylor or even them rotating with the ruck. One in the ruck one down in the forward line.
Your thoughts??
He does push forward on occassions.. think this is the way it should stay. More talls in the forward line is not an area we are lacking

True
I still would like to see him play there for a full game and see how he goes.
I think Taylor has a great contested mark, if we were to ever blood Renouf we may see a three ruck set up with one ruck up forward?

We are allready too tall and slow in the forward line. Unless we are stuck with only one of Rough/Boyle/Franklin up there, (in which case I'd rather Thorp/Dowler/Croady even) I just can't see it.

No, not Croad! He'd take 15 marks and shank all the kicks.
I think it was the Swans game that I heard one of the commentators crying out for us to put "a big body such as Campbell" at CHF to give us a contest. If we continue to use the stay at home forward line, it might be worth instructing the ruckmen to run the centre square more so than the boundary to provide a contest here.

Except that game (and most of pre-season mind you), we've only had 1 or at most 2 of our tall forwards on the field (and playing up front) at any one time. In that sense, yes it could be valuable...but he's still too slow for any benefit he would provide. (As nice as it would be for a "man-mountain" to be playing as a stay-at-home CH-FF).

Im more than happy for Campbell to drift forward anytime he feels like a rest. Throw a cat amongst the pigeons and further stretch the defence as they struggle to cover the talls we already have there. It needs to be a rotation they use regularly to break up the defence. A goal or two per game from our rucks would be massive, but even if it dsoesnt come to that, their presence will draw defenders from our other forwards.
Really want to see Robbie drop back into defence and put some body into great lumps like "Big Bad Hands in the back" Barry Hall. I love seeing his nose rubbed in the grass and the ensuing dummy spit. I know we will be planning on having other units on the bigger forwards, but they just dont, or aren't capable of putting the body into the contest.

It looks as if both Ruckmen are drifting forward. I like it! :thumbsu: But geez I wish they'd both kick straighter. :thumbsu:
Campbell looks huge when he drifts forward. He's one big unit!

No. Not good enough lead, mark or kick. Too slow. Not agile enough to lose his opponent. Ok to push him there for a few minutes to create a mis-match but not a permanent option.

Could we.... yes. Do we need to ..... no. As for Croady going forward and shanking the kicks, just let him take all the grabs then when he lines up get Dew to sit off his hip and get the handball
need to practice the goalkicking...

If you ask Richo, he will tell you he plays forward already:D
Campbell has trouble playing a half of a game now following his injury. In addition our ruck stocks need to be protected so it makes little sense playing him in the forward line where we have better options anyway.

What injury is this?
I think Campbell needs to have more influence than just being there when he goes forward.
If he shanks every kick and doesn't take a contested mark the opposition won't worry too much.
Having said that - give the guy a crack and let him develop as a forward. Remember when Donald McDonal gave him a few games at CHB? The guy is a good footballer! We just need to find the right fit for him!

Short memories.
Campbell injured his knee in the Wizard Cup in 2005 and missed the whole season. I don't believe he has ever fully recovered and this is why he generally only plays around 50% game time.

Ohhhhhh
Short memory indeed. I had totally forgotten about that, I must admit.

No problems it was a few years ago and the club has managed him very well, never playing him much more than about 50 minutes or so a game so that he plays most games a season. But I think they will not risk playing him fwd or back unless absolutley necessary during a game.

I like Cambo in ruck. But it seems to me when he plays up forward he is even better then he is in the ruck. I wouldn't mind it.

I love the way they are playing him ATM, when he goes forward it's another great strong target.
I wouldn't like to see him there full time - however on the odd occasion it is great coaching to mix it up a little. And gives opps something to think about rather than Buddy :thumbsu:
I like what I have seen with Campbell - and believe he is getting better and better and with that grows confidence.
I think one of his greatest strengths is endurance. He seems to be able to move off his opponent and run forward to present another option freely.
I don't think we should mess with that.

We've already got 3 capable tall forwards in Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Tim Boyle, we've also got Mark Williams to complement them. There is really no room for Campbell and in the event of an injury of suspension, i'd much rather see Beau Dowler or Mitch Thorp have a go. Not only that, but i don't really trust Simon Taylor as the No.1 ruckman.

We use those forwards quite deep.
If we had someone taking marks between the 50 and the centre we'd be a much more effective side.

When the gameplan works successfully, that is the role played by McGlynn, Clarke, Crawford, Bateman, Lewis, Morton, Rioli.
When we are shut down, we need a bigger body able to go through there as a target. In that situation, Robbie would be as good as anyone...

When Big Max gets right Robbie Campbell will be playing up forward:thumbsu:

Nope. He tries hard but is not the quickest or most agile player. Would just result in the opposition's other ruckman following him down and making it more difficult for our proper forwards to find space and take pack marks.
A key reason for drafting Rioli was our inability to keep the ball in the forward fifty, as a result of a lack of pace and for some players, effort. Campbell is only going to make that issue worse. If we need more height, Thorpe or Dowler should play. That's why they were drafted.

He was up there for a bitt today and proided us another great target.
Kicked 2 goals as well which were pretty handy.
THough he did play down back majority of the game
No. There are plenty of other candidates to play forward.

He played full back on neitz once Corad went off, did a good job and then had a stint in the ruck in the last quarter, taylor needs praising as apart from Roughie playing a few minutes in ruck Tails did most of it himself all day.
After the loss of Croad today, and the reasonable job he did in defence, I think you have your answer.
He now must play down back as a key defender until such a time as Croady's arm heals.
If he's struggling, then he goes into the ruck or forward, and Roughie slots into defence.

I think he could fill in for Croad now that Croads out for a while. He was great today and I think would be more wated down back than forward. Our forwards were awesome today.

Campbell would need the right match up if he headed back, possibly a Kosi or Ottens.
Would rather see Dowler or Thorpe come in and play as a key defender though.
