As most of us would be aware Richmond runs a mentoring program where players are assigned a former player to turn to for guidance through their careers. Here is the list for 2008:

Chris Newman – Barry Young
Will Thursfield – Matthew Rogers
Brett Deledio – Dick Clay
Andrew Raines – Nick Daffy
Troy Simmonds – David Honybun
Graham Polak – Trevor Poole
Nathan Brown – John Nix
Jack Riewoldt – Eric Leech
Trent Cotchin – Barry Rowlings
Shane Edwards – Bruce Tempany
Joel Bowden – Michael Green
Matthew Richardson – Mike Perry
Jordan McMahon – Nathan Bower
Dean Polo – Tim Powell
Kayne Pettifer – Dick Clay
Luke McGuane – Jeff Hogg
Kane Johnson – Gerald Betts
Alex Rance – Peter Williams
Dean Putt – John Ronaldson
Mitch Morton – Stephen Ryan
Shane Tuck – Andy Goodwin
Danny Meyer – Francis Bourke
Daniel Jackson – Michael Gale
Graeme Bond – Mark Coughlan
Jay Schulz – Paul Broderick
Adam Pattison – Brendon Gale
Clayton Collard – Phil Egan
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls – Phil Egan
Richard Tambling – Phil Egan
Chris Hyde – Stephen Mount
Greg Tivendale – Todd Menegola
David Gourdis – Barry Cameron
Cleve Hughes – Stuart Wigney
Matthew White – Cameron Clayton
Jarrod Silvester – Mark Summers
Travis Casserly – Laurie Fowler
Tristan Cartledge – Kevin Fitzgerald
Daniel Connors – Tony Free
Kelvin Moore – Nathan Bower
Nathan Foley – Justin Pickering
Andrew Collins – Chris Naish
Cameron Howat – Jon Howat
Angus Graham – Ricky McLean
Jacob King – Wayne Walsh

The one mentor-player combination that really caught my eye was the pairing of Meyer with St Francis, here's hoping that some of St.Francis determination can rub off on young Danny.

ROLMFAO @ this pairing. GREG TIVENDALE - TODD MENEGOLA.

Now that would shake an opposition's foundations to the core!!!!

I'm more concerned about Andrew Raines and Nick Daffy. Nick's not going to teach him much about the on field stuff and I would want Nick teaching anyone about the off-field side of things

Jeez... Graeme Bond must be struggling they've got Coughlan to mentor HIM.

I like the Connors - Free pairing.

lmao at J. Pickering mentoring Foley.
Nathan would actually teach Pickering a thing or two.

I like the Broderick-Schulz matchup though. Hopefully Brodders worth ethic can rub off onto Jay.

David Honybun-WTF?
Cameron & Jon Howat- Father Son team?
Jake King- Can we just match him up with a cage fighter or something?

Good to see Benny Gale involved considering his role with the AFLPA.

Chris Naish would tower over Andy Collins

I love this initiative but I had to get out my copy of The Tigers of Old to check up on some of those players. Kevin Fitzgerald played 1 game for us in 1961 and 5 games in the seconds. From The Tigers of Old:

Kevin was a wingman who injured his leg in his first senior game against St Kilda in round 5 of 1961. As a result he never played for Richmond again. He later became a succesful professional runner winning the 10,000 metre titles in 1975 and 1975 and the Victorian one mile, in 1972 and 1973. Kevin also holds a degree in Commerce and lives in East Malvern.

Interesting....
Sometimes I see Bruce Tempany in Edwards' build and the way he moves out on the ground.
Gerald Betts couldn't get a kick at Richmond, and Johnson gets one....in the wrong direction!!
And Angus Graham will end up a very angry footballer if Ricky McLean is going to stay his mentor. lol

Found these ones very interesting -

Daniel Connors - Tony Free
Adam Pattison - Brendon Gale
Jay Shultz - Paul Broderick
Danny Meyer - Francis Burke
Trent Cotchin - Barry Rowlings

These ones seems ridiculous -

Dean Polo - Tim Powell
Luke McGuan - Jeff Hogg

Polo got more Brownlow Votes in his debut than Powell would of got on his whole career and I can imagine all the back line strategy Jeff Hogg will be talking to young Luke about.

Bit suss on the Trever Poole - Troy Simmonds match up. Ones a metre tall and the other 2 metres tall.

In saying that I think its a great initiative , not set up with playing positions in mind.

Bit surprised Sheedy didn't come to the party for young Collins though he would of learnt heaps.

Well, I hope this year mentoring will give them a mindset to be proud of the 100 years anniversary of the Tigers.
Hopefully it'll bear fruits and the Tiges will play passionately for the club.

:)Agree, some odd pairings, but I think the point is that many of these guys woul;d be considered successful in pursuits outside football such as business etc. and help our current crop players develop as people.
They won't always be footballers and I think you'll find off-field success can sometimes translate in to on-field sucess.
The idea of the mentor is to stabilise their off-field life. As far as on-field mentoring, that's the role of Wallace and his coaching panel!

Fantastic. We have one of the biggest pissheads and losers on the drink in the clubs' history in Tony Free mentoring Daniel Connors who also happens to be one of the biggest pissheads and losers on the drink in the clubs' history.

Maybe Freezer will teach him how to run a mean juice bar:eek:

True, might have been a little harsh on Connors - he is young and can improve. Did you ever run into Free when he was on the sauce in his hey day? I could not possibly type anything that could do justice to the type of ass hole that he was.

Why do the three aboriginal players have the one mentor to share? Seems really odd.

Jarrod Silvester – Mark Summers

Mark Summers is a physio in Fairfield (and a very good one I believe). For the life of me I can't remember him playing for Richmond.

Does anyone have any info on him?
