I think rotating players is the way to go, often after a player had an extended rest during the series, they performed well when returning after the rest.

This Summer the cricket went on way too long - I love it, but I was sick of it by the end.
D.Hussey should have been utilized this series.

I'll never understand this tiredness thing. They've been on about needing more rest time for years, but the moment the IPL comes along (meaning MORE cricket), they jump all over each other to play.
Funny how they're never tired when more money is on offer.

They had 5 days off each week during the series.
I would't mind one of those jobs...

Do you think the mental 'workload' for the IPL would compare to a Summer of Test Matches and ODIs?
I agree with you in theory, but hit and giggle stuff for a 'franchise,' compared to 5 days of pure concentration for your country is a little different.

The point he made about a lack of One Day specialists is a valid one.
4/5 years ago we had Bevan, Bichel, Hussey, Symonds, Clarke, Watson, Hogg, Ian Harvey and Bracken who were all playing one day cricket only, giving the bulk of the test side time to rest/play state cricket. Now (barring Bracken and Hopes, give or take a few retirements), the Test Squad and the One Day squad are essentially identical. In hindsight, it's really no suprise that India performed better than both Sri Lanka and Australia come finals time, 3/4 of their ODI squad was on fresh legs.
CA needs to start picking a bigger ODI squad (18-20 instead of the 13 man squads we've seen over the past few years) and reinstate the rotation policy. Your David Husseys, Adam Voges, Ben Hilfenhauses and Peter Siddles should be playing 2-3 games each per summer.

But if you say you need a rest, then playing in India for 44 days isn't the answer.
How can that compare to recuperating at your own home ?
Are the players saying that they WILL play in India regardless but Cricket Australia must also give them more time off from it's own agenda ?????

Absolute cop-out, unless they're planning on the India thing being nothing but a 44 day piss-drinking tour with absolutely no reagrd for their on-field performance.
When it comes to ODI's, only the World Cup matters. No-one who is not going to be at the next World Cup should be in the team. Losing this series doesn't matter. The only loss is that a few of the players who will defend our title in a few years time didn't get out on a the park.

That is exactly what they are saying, and why I am totally opposed to Australian involvement in the IPL. I am really concerned that the honour of playing for their country is becoming a second priority.
These guys are paid very well to do the job they are doing. If you can't do what you are being asked to do, then don't sign the lucrative contracts. Simple as that. For the money they are paid, I really don't think 9-10 Test matches, as well as a handful of ODIs and a few 20/20 matches in are too much work over 12 months, expecially for batsman. The only players I would be concerned about are quick bowlers.

ponting wants an injection of youth. as others have said here rotation or a bigger squad is the way to go. i think problem is players want to play for their country, which isnt a bad thing, a maybe got a bit peeved when dropped. but player preservation must be considered also.
sidenote: anyone remember the days of taylor and co where the test team essentially played the ODIs as well.

They should probably be paid more now, to be honest.
They are the best 11 Crickets in the country - our national game; they play all year round, home and away, and yet most good AFL Players would earn more than them.

They would be getting in excess of 400K at least, plus all expenses paid for on tours.
I love cricket, but that is plenty of money to live on.
They barely played last year, and this summer they finally play a fair bit of cricket and whinge. Load of crap.

They are the absolute pinnacle of their field - in this country, and arguably the entire world; that is not a big income when you're the best of the best.
And I love the Cricket, but I was ****ing sick and tired of it and am glad it's finished; the players would have had to have been very, very weary.

They can take a break in April and May if they are so tired. What a load of bullshit.

Yep. I'm sure the players would find plenty of time to rest if they really wanted to. What they are, in effect, saying is they want the same money for doing less work. This isn't on fellas, if you want to play less cricket then take a pay cut.
This is the problem I have with sporting people earning grossly exaggerated incomes. Not only do they start to believe they are worth it, but inevitably they begin to think they should be getting a whole lot more. They also forget what it took to get where they are.

The AFL and it's clubs have more money than Cricket Australia and the state associations do. Football gets more asses on seats and people watching on TV than cricket - it only figures that footballers would get paid more than cricketers.

Sorry, but I think they get more than enough money already, when you throw in sponsorships and media work these players get ridiculous amounts of money, they certainly don't need a pay rise.
I'll agree it was a long summer, but they barely lifted a finger from March through September last year, so it isn't like the schedule has been packed for a while.
