Albeit briefly...... http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23327549-23211,00.html
BRENT Guerra has given new meaning to the term "loose man in defence", spending four minutes in that role as Hawthorn's 19th player during last weekend's NAB Cup semi-final against Adelaide.
In another bizarre development in the AFL's official pre-season competition, Hawthorn admitted to the league it had inadvertently played Guerra in the opening minutes of the final quarter.
Instead of sitting on the interchange, as intended by the Hawks' coaching staff after the three-quarter-time break, Guerra was instead an on-field extra.
Before the club detected it was using 19 players illegally, Guerra had accumulated a kick-out (which he used to kick to himself and thus gain a disposal), a mark, another kick and a handball-receive, which resulted in an ineffective kick.
Would have been an interesting start to this week had we lost the game last weekend with such an issue. Not something that arises too often. How can such a stupid mistake be made?
Begs the question who was doing the matchups in the Crows box who didn't pick up that Hawthorn had an extra man on the field for a few minutes. Would have thought that the start of quarters was where the white board was most important to work out whether changes had been made.
I blame John Reid;)

Where was the AFL's match steward who is supposed to count all the interchanges, including the ones during a break?

Probably doing the same thing as the umps who were supposed to review the scores at quarter time and still missed the Edwards Super Goal.
Could have been VERY interesting if the result had been different. However, with the Crows winning it became pretty much irrelevant anyway.

the radio commentators picked it up almost straight away.
Oh well, should mean that they at least stop whinging about Clarkson's phone breaking last year!

Probably still waiting in line for a cold/red hot Balfours pie.

Remember the kerfuffle when a West Torrens player jumped the fence to avoid the count, this was many moons ago.
I keep thinking it might have been Robbie Muir, but am probably getting it mixed up with the time he jumped the fence to clobber a spectator.

Which radio commentators? I'm pretty sure i was listening to 5aa at the time and don't remember them mentioning it...?

They did mention it.
Atleast the Boundary Rider did anyway, absolutely positive of this because I was listening and I turned to my friends and said that there was an extra Hawk player on the field.

I thought that it was ok as long as we only made 16 interchanges per quarter.
These new rules they keep trialling in the NAB cup are so confusing!

ummm no - you can't have more than 18 on the field. If we had of picked it up, Goodwin could have asked for the game to be stopped and a count to occur. If you would have been found to have more players on the field than allowed then your score would have been reset to 0.
Hawks fined for 19th player in semi-final

HAWTHORN have been fined $7500 by the AFL for fielding an extra player during the fourth quarter of last Saturday night's NAB Cup match against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
The player in question, Brent Guerra, was due to start the quarter on the bench, but played the first four minutes of the term before the error was realised.
During his time on the field, Guerra gathered two kicks and also took a kick-in following an Adelaide behind.
After being contacted by the AFL during the week over the incident, the Hawks acknowledged the error and offered a full written response outlining how the incident occurred.
Under the AFL regulations and laws of the game, a club can face a range of sanctions for having an extra player on the ground.

If this were for premiership points, I would have settled for nothing less than Hawthorn's score at the 4 minutes mark of the last quarter to be reset to 0. As it was the NAB Cup, the fine is sufficient for me.
It was lucky neither this mistake or Edward's SuperGoal mistake played a pivotal role in the result.

I wouldnt be surprised if Adelaide knew from the start of the quarter that Hawks had 19 players on.. they probably didnt really care and didnt want to kick up a fuss during a NAB cup game... they probably even saw it as a challenge... good way to test the players around flooding situations int he forward half.
Had it of been for 4 premiership points... im sure it would be a totally different story

Apparently Port Power also made this same mistake v Collingwood!
Hawthorn are a bit stiff. If Guerra was standing behind Dew, no-one would have seen him.

I have a feeling that comment was said tongue in cheek ;)

I'll tell you one thing. I know it's my club involved, but it's only pre-season. The way some people are carrying on about this non-issue and Paul Roos' "chat" with one of his players, I really wonder how people on this forum would handle a REAL issue. I guess people are missing the controversial. :)
