I saw an episode on Channel 9 Perth at about 11.30pm last night.

They should really cancel Two and a Half Shits and put this on at 7.00pm instead.

agreed. its been so long since we've had a decent sitcom on our screens

the new ones that channel ten just bought are god awful. the one with frasier and the one with puddy from seinfeld

Edited for accuracy :thumbsu:

Getting off topic perhaps, but hopefully the laugh track format is getting killed off. We've seen US broadcast networks in recent years giving non-laugh track shows more of a go over laugh track shows (although CBS still has a hard on for anything with a laugh track).

Aside from most laugh track shows being shit, the laugh track itself is annoying (even in good shows like Seinfeld).

cheers, thats what i meant.

curb your enthusiasm is better than seinfeld IMO

what i loved about seinfeld though was that their laugh track sounded real genuine. except for seasons 8 and 9, i dont know if it had anything to do with larry david leaving, but they changed the laugh track and it sounded so canned and unnatural.

i hope it becomes extinct as well.

What laugh track? It was a live audience  Hell they had to quieten the laughs a lot of the time.

Godfrey Jones
8 Mar 2008, 23:20
they're all live audiences mate (well most of them i believe),

but once it goes through editing, the end product sounds fake, with the laughs edited and moved, for example when a joke is building up there isnt any laughter, only when the punchline hits you'll hear a wall of laughter. sounds unnatural that people wouldnt be laughing during the joke set up, as they see it coming. for example i always hated the laughter on friends.

seinfeld managed to retain the natural sound though

some shows though are terrible, like sabrina the teenage witch, lmao

Yeah, most of the laugh track shows are filmed in front of a live audience but if the relevant people (producers/networks/etc) don't think there is enough laughs they will add in some. As most laugh track shows are, funnily enough, not that funny this seems to happen almost always :p

Annoying, the least funny shows tend to have the most laughs crammed in, making it out that the audience is absolutely pissing themselves after EVERY joke :o

Here's a fun fact for you though: Despite not airing live, Chappelle's Show never used a laugh track. So even if a joke didn't go over well it went to air with the audience's real reaction.

Curb is a funny show but nowhere near Seinfeld. That's like saying Wings or the POB are better The Beatles. Sorry but it just isn't.

You could put it at 7pm but it probably would do a lot worse then the very funny Two & A Half Men which are new eps of course. Personally I prefer the traditional sitcom with the live audience as opposed to drivel like My Name Is Earl *shudders* or god forbid Kath & Kim.

Good to have it back tho!

Appartently ch9 have purchased the rights from ch10.I don't think it was originally on ch10.I think ch9 showed the first season [about 6 episodes] called 'The Seinfeld Chronicles'.For years those episodes first season episodes never appeared on ch10 because ch9 had them.

Does anyone else think it looks and sounds different on 9?

Maybe I am just comparing it to the DVDs, but the quality was certainly poorer.

As for comparing Curb Your Enthusiasm to Seinfeld - Are you 'aving a laugh? (Same goes for saying Two and A Half Men is "very funny". I know you are Channel 9's official spokesman on here black hart, but even you must be struggling to keep a straight face defending them constantly).

The DVDs had massive digital restoration of the picture and sound. Odds are Ch 9 are using the un-remastered versions.

It did look and sound better on 10 though.

Ch 9 first had the rights to Seinfeld back in 93 I believe. It was aired at 10:30PM early in the week and did not rate well (to be honest the first season was a little slow to get going). They sold the rights to Ch 10 and the rest is history.
Looks like 9 and 10 have done a swap with Friends and Seinfeld now, each other trying to milk the remains out of each others success

From what i understand, 9 have taken the source program and 'enhanced' it by zooming the image slightly and then giving it a 'widescreen' look.

I have tuned out of Seinfeld in recent times, i still have fond memories of the show... but over time saw the episodes far too often - on 10 and multiple times on TV1. I have collected the dvds, but rarely watch episodes from them.

To be honest, I'm not sure 9 even showed the first season when they initially had rights. I remember stumbling across the show late one night and saw the episode The Parking Garage, which was season 3. So they were probably showing the most recent episodes they could get (remembering back then it took 6 months to a year before we got episodes from the US).

I still remember thinking this was a funny show, and then all of sudden it wound up on 10 in prime time.

Dunno, I quite like Charlie Sheen's character on the show, its not bad.

But Seinfeld has aged well...needs a better timeslot.

Actually, you're right. Season 1 was never aired on 9. I remember channel 10 at the time making a big deal of the fact that they would be showing season 1 (and the Seinfeld Chronicles / pilots) "for the first time on Australian TV".

Two and a half men only has 5 or 6 episodes to go on Ch9 until the Writers strike hits it, who knows what will happen then.

Friends has made late night appearances on Channel Nine in the last little bit - it appeared on a sunday night at about midnight one night - i recorded the highlights of the A1GP and Friends was on before it. Which surprised me. But Friends still does make an appearance on Channel Nine.

When LD left Seinfeld, the bizarro world LD humour magic took a a left turn.

I'm a BIG Seinfeld fan but having seen all the episodes of CYE & Seinfeld, pound for pound, I can't seperate the two. They have that LD factor which is
extra funny. Love LD. The CYE series is a more reality TV experience with warts & all.. how can nobody not curse/ swear after all the stuff ups??

The episode below, Car Pool Lane, when LD picks up a hooker is one of LD's better shows although I highly rate The Tent Pants & The Doll rate up there with the Soup Nazi.

I've secured LD as an investor of the Mustangs BF Fantasy Football teams. :D

A lot of shows filmed before a live audience still have the canned laughter effect due to editing and "LAUGHTER/APPLAUSE" cues.

Putting aside your praise for 2 and a half man (it's not the worst show in the world) Earl and K+K would be much much poorer shows if they used the traditional sitcom camera work and laugh track techniques (I don't rate either, although I do think K+K is unfairly bashed here, it's early seasons were ok before it became a parody of itself).

Laugh track would make zero difference but the traditional multi camera setup certainly wouldn't take away and would likely add to the quality.

The laugh track/live audience mucks up the pacing of the show, jokes have to be more spread out, you can't have too many subtle or hidden jokes because the laugh track would affect the flow of it.

Scrubs (which I'm not the biggest fan of but it's ok) did a bit where half the episode was done as a cheesey sitcom format with a laugh track and you can tell the difference, even if they were lampooning the traditional sitcom, it is pretty accurate.

I have every season on DVD, it's definitely one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, hence its late night slot. It's just a fact of life, good comedies are on late at night (30 Rock, Family Guy, Arrested Development, Boston Legal).
