View Full Version : Collingwood VFL vs Tasmania

Being a teenager in Tasmania, I don't get to see the pies play live....ever basically. The last time was Queens Birthday in 2001.

Obviously I'm going to wander down to North Hobart to watch this game, as it's a 5 minute walk away from me.

My question is, is there any chance a few AFL listed players will make the trip?

I would say so. Tasmania's less than an hour flight, and there's plenty of players pushing their case forward for selection. Please don't hold back with the details in your review! :D

Gee I hope the Club does something with the Tasmanian Supporters Group for this game. It's a great chance for the Club to really embrace the Tassie supporters.

Yes, I'd love that too.

I e-mailed them a month or two ago asking if they planned to do anything in tasmania.

Never replied

Get in touch with your supporter group, http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewforum.php?f=2 about the game. I'm sure they will have something planned.

Sad, but true.

We'd be able to get an idea of who will be selected for the round 1 match by the players travelling down here imo.

The AFL listed players travelling down will probably be the players that start off with the VFL side.

True but the VFL matches are going to be as close as Tassie gets to seeing a Collingwood team the least the Club should do is look after them with some sort of function.

I don't wanna have to rant and rave to get a reaction everytime this subject comes up, it's just a pity those paid to watch these threads don't push these subjects up as worthy.

Why don't the Pies ever play down here? They've played here twice ever (they came down here in the early 1900s for some tour matches I believe, and then again in 1998 v Melbourne). We give them a lot of support and they pay as back with a VFL practice match?! pfft

Anyway, I'll have to get off work if the rumours of Burns playing are true...

Edit: actually it was 2001 v Melbourne, went dusted off the program for old times sakes!

I rememebr that game so clearly.

Seeing Buckley deliver 50m passes that barely went 2 metres high.

Never forgotten it.

Buckleys first intraclub practise match for the Pies was at Glenferrie oval - he kicked a goal from 50 on his right foot that never went more than 2 meters above the ground. Ball went straight back to the centre got handpassed to him and he did the same on his left from exactly the same spot!!! Leigh Matthews actually fell of his chair! Priceless.

Reported in the Hobart Mercury this morning:

"The pies will play 2008 senior captain Scott Burns, on the way back from injury (back), Brodie Holland, Paul Licuria, Ben Johnson, Sean Rusling and Alan Toovey."

You'd expect at least two of them play, all pushing for a senior berth in round one.

Any word of whether or not Dyas is playing?

Chances are that Dyas would be playing. Can't imagine he's play round 1 for Collingwood.

He'd be starting the year in the VFL, so he may as well learn to play with the VFL list ASAP.

Carmody, Colbert, Crow, Frost, Jurrah, McDonald, Nicholls, Oldmeadow, Hogan.

They appear to be the first sign of confirmed VFL squad signings. Not sure who some of them are, but you'd imagine since they're playing in the practice match AFTER the VFL list lodgment, they're probably on the squad.

Just got home from the game.

Rusling was a class above. Led well, was too strong for his opponent. Ended up with 5, and missed a couple as well. His kicking was quite good though. Also set up one or two others.

McAffer kicked 2 goals. Both in the first term. Looked decent.

Toovey wasquite good. Got a fair bit of the ball and used it quite well. Has a pathetic excuse for a beard though.

Ben Johnson was good all day. Kicked the final 2 goals of the match, both great goals on his left.

Thoolen was very very poor in my opinion. Did very little.

Cox showed a fair bit of class when he got the ball. Didn't strike me as a negater at all though. DOn't think he ever will be either.

Dyas fumbled a few and I didn't see him get much of the ball to be honest. I think he kicked a goal though.

Burns was Burns. Worked hard all day and was one of our best.

Holland was solid.

Zeke

I was also at the game, and I think Rusling kicked 6...

Burns had some good run, but also got caught holding the ball a couple of times due to poor decision making, looked a little rusty to me.

BJ got better as the game progressed and Cox was quite good running the ball out of the backline. McAffer was very busy all day.

I'd have to agree on Thoolen, looked a little out to see, which is a worry in a VFL praccy. Dutchy was ok. Licca was the same little 18 tearing in and out of packs.

Joffa was posing for photos and posturing about the place as per usual.

15 Mar 2008, 15:22
Collingwood won by 56 points by the way, and Rusling did kick 6 and McAffer 3.

Some of the non-AFL listed players were quite impressive. Nicholls was his usual busy self. Kris Pendlebury did some good things in defence and Liam Jarrah shows some promis.

smiddaz123
15 Mar 2008, 15:25
Jarrah lloked very good up forward. Didn't look great down back in the last quarter.

He slotted a lovely goal from the boundary line in the third quarter I think.

By the way did anyone else see that crazy man who was talking complete gibberish while walking around the fence? Couldn't stop laughing.

He's that token old (not all there) bloke for the glenorchy footy clubs..He's always at KGV when the pies play...

Agree with everyones reports..had to leave at through the 3rd quarter for work, but what i could see, Johnno was one of our best, rusling look effing awesome: he has got wicked hands, sometimes he had perfect leads 20m directly in front, but the young vfl players failed to look around...could've ended up with a lot more.

Jarrah looked awesome..sign him up! Got a wicked vertical leap!

It was a bit hard for Dyas to make an impact being down back in a one sided game, he's a great thinker, and has good hands (took a beaut mark in the first), but can't actually remember him kicking a ball all game!!

Toovs actually looked decent..I think VFL is more his game:D

Overall, Rusling is an exciting prospect!!!!

Just what the doctor ordered with the season ready to commence next week. He needed to have one really good game and especially with the little niggling injury he picked up towards the end of the pre-season that kept him out of a few of those practice games.

Selection is going to be quite difficult next week.

Just thought i would add to this:

Overall a very scrappy game in my opinion.... collingwood where alot faster... alot of skill errors. probably to be expected at this time in the year

RUSLING

Agree with Rusling was easily collingwoods best, leading hard and marking strongly not sure if he bagged 5 or 6..... could have had more a few misses and one big shank out on the full.

Excellant in signing the kids autographs when he came on to the bench... seems a great kid

McAffer

bagged 3 goals, two in the first half and a long set shot from about 50 out... seemed allright just thought his decision making at times was slow but a good start for the season

Tooves

was ok.... provided some good running clearances out of the backline... still seems awkward skills wise but a reasonable performance

Ben Johnson

Agree to with Ben Johnson... worked hard all day... had very little interchanges so he did alot of running out there on the wing.... bagged two last quarter goals... looked to be in some reasonable touch

Thoolen

Agreed also with thoolen.... wasn't too impressed seemed awkward and hesitative at times... they used him in the ruck a little bit as well but still think he has a long way to go.

Coxy

Did some brilliant running plays with his typical dummies..... did some good things but no way did he stand out in my eyes... a bit to relaxed in defence in marking up at times... don't imagine he would be in the starting line up for round 1.

Dyas

I didn't see alot of this guy to be honest... so im not real sure how he played... didn't see him get much of the ball

Burns

Typical burnsy game hard in and under... rotated alot on the bench.... was providing a bit of leadership at the quarter time huddles..

Holland

In my eyes.... was pathetic.... didn't run hard disposal was poor often just blazing away not looking for a target.... rotated alot on the bench. Stuffed alot of things up. Can't see him making the ones playing like he did yesterday... Similar comments where passed around by alot of the crowd as well

Out of the newer players

In my opinion one of the best on ground was the Dale Thomas look alike (same no. as well) Frost... really like his poise reminded me alot of dale with the way he plays as well.... just wondering if anyone else had any information on this guy

Jarrah or Jurrah? looked impressive as well... very athlectic played very well down back... did some special things

The other player i thought looked good was Danny Nichols? Hard worker in my opinion should have kept him over holland.... although hollands probably just a marketing ploy these days

Also like no. 22 not sure of his name small blonde haired fella... did some gutsy stuff hard at it and giving a bit out..

Ryan Colbert i also like very much.. worked well in the midfield

Kris Pendlebury - surely Pendles brother looked similar and play similar was impressive down back as well has the same poise as his brother... also wondering if anyone has any more information on this guy?

Yeah righto got the numbers mixed up...

I don't know what game you where at... but Holland was dreadful... sure he's coming back from injury and has proved he can play football in the past... doesn't mean he's in our best 22.... things such as not looking for an option just blazing away.... choosing poor options and general skill errors...

compared with alot of the younger fellas out there he didn't look more experienced at all.... not being intentionally harsh just calling as i see it... i rekon with no injuries he is going to find it hard to get a game.

spoke to alot of people at the game and they seemed to have the same opinion

Holland looked in pretty good touch against Hawthorn, didn't get much of it but showed that if he gets in form and gets in the side he will be valuable as he has clean hands, relatively clean disposal (if not that damaging) and is pretty zippy. Don't write him off yet. He is far from washed up and being out of the side is more a testament to our depth than a blight on Holland. He may not be as good as he used to be but I feel he is one of the most underappreciated players in our side. His 2003 season was very important he was one of the elite taggers in the AFL and if you doubt this look at his BOG performance in the prelminary final against Port.

Totally agree.

And who on our current list bar Holland would be able to do the job Holland did on Camporeale.

Holland adds some arrogance and aggression. We don't have a player like him. Possibly Maxwell, but he ain't going into the midfield.
