Can I ask for the abolishment of this all too common line please?

It's said far too often on this board.

Not to be too provocative but it's certainly possible. We've seen what McLean is capable of (see the final against St. Kilda) but we're yet to see Sylvia at full tilt...IMO he certainly could possibly match it with Brock, if not, he's probably a whole lot more versatile too

I'm one of them. Fair enough I brought it up during my match report, but I can't remember in recent times that it has been brought up. Its no longer a popular belief, but if some of us still believe it, why should it be abolished? If you're gonna abolish that, why don't I come out and say abolish talk of Moloney being an integril part of our midfield? It comes down to personal opinions. Thats what the board is for.

Sylvia has shown a few glimpes, but no point putting him up on a pedastal like this until hes done a lot more and found some consistency, ala Brock McLean who has been arguably our main weapon in the middle for two years now.

As for Moloney being an integral part of our midfield, I think its fair to say not many would disagree with that statement.

At the moment that's like saying you're a better captain of the Titanic.

I believed it up until mid 2006. Col has all the skills but we don't even know if he can play midfield in a regular season game yet.

Thank god..........thought id lost you too bartram when i saw this thread header. Your one of very few people i respect on here who seems to know what he's talking about and is realistic and not one eyed.

IF .........anyone honestly believes this crap they dont get too the footy enough. McLean is the best player on our list at 22yo. People say col will improve but whats stopping brock? hes the same age.

End of subject.

I don't think Col will be better than Brock but is it really impossible?

Funnily enough so far this preseason Sylvia has been fairly good and McLean hasn't got near it.
Time will tell. Sylvia has more raw ability, it is all about how he comes into each game with his mindset and how he handles his injuries.

McLean is yet to earn the right to be called a good modern day AFL player IMO. Consistency is the key to any good player and he is yet to produce it and neither has Sylvia - hopefully this is the year they bring the evidence to the table

McLean suffered from having such a breakout year and copping hard tags week in week out.

My future dream is just for the McLean, Sylvia, Jones triple just to tear teams apart on a consistant basis.

this thread is ridiculous... people can form their own opinions...

people aren't saying "Colin Sylvia is better than Brock McLean" they simply are saying they feel he will be a better player... it's simply an opinion...

i'm sure we'd all agree that while Brock has shown us most of what he's capable of (even if it's not week in week out) while Sylvia still has a lot of potential he can fulfull... he may fulfill it or he may not, until we know towards the end of their careers, people simply have to form an opinion and decide for themselves...

and as for whether i agree with it, i think we will find out this season, sylvia has been named in the best a number of times this pre season, has his first complete pre season behind him (something brock hasn't had too many troubles with)...

Well, Brock isn't doing much at the moment except being a nutter in his car.

I really wish Sylvia had a left foot. Some of those slanted kicks off the right foot on an angle look very awkward and rarely hit a target.

We all know Brock is and will always be . . . Does anybody remember how good Clint Bartram actually was in his first ever season. Rivers and Bartram 22 games . . . I know.

I like Sylvia though, immagine 22 games from him . . .

I think the particular comment is made more out of hope than a valued judgement.

Although Sylvia does seem to possess an dynamic "x factor" that makes him seem so exciting. Trouble is though he only gets the ball about 15 times a game.

Do people see him as a Ryan O Keefe type player? Or would you like to push him into the middle

bloodpumpsRnB
11 Mar 2008, 10:21
I see him as a strong marking forward as he has very good hands.

I tend to get a bit carried away and liken him to a Voss or Ricciuto. Very big call I know, but I'm not going to be one to put limits on what Sylvia is capable of acheiving. This is the year he leaves the forward line and makes his mark in the centre.

Nathan Jones and James McDonald are getting NO love for some fans!

I think McLean is more rounded than Jones. He is a better user of the ball, and can kick goals. Jones needs to improve his skills, although a lot of the time he gets the ball in the thick of the action, hence he's under pressure.

Let's not write off McLean after a couple of incidents (and an injury-riddled 2007). He is still a gun!
