View Full Version : 'Doves' tour.
Is anyone here going to any of the 'Doves' shows? They're playing in Melbourne this week, and I believe tickets are still available for Thursday night (I haven't got any yet!).
I actually saw them in 2000, doing a promotional show for their album 'Lost Souls', at Revolver. It wasn't a bad show, and it was pretty cool seeing such a good band, at a point when they weren't as hyped up amongst the music public (although, the music media had certainly got onto them!).
Tickets will probably be around $45, and while they are worth seeing (and one of my favourite bands), I am not sure whether I will go or not.
Is anyone from BigFooty going?

I am going to the Wednesday night show.
Me and mate befriended an English lass during her stay here in Melbourne and her twin sister is the girlfriend of the guitarist, so we have got free tickets and I think get to meet the band! Pretty sweet.
They are in my opinion one of the best bands on the planet. The Man Who Told Everything is one of my favourite songs ever!
Unfortunately for me, I don't get to see another of the world's premier bands, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club tonight! :( Sold out too quickly and I am bleeeeeeding!!
PS: Sorry Stocka, I know this doesn't help your cause any!
I have now got tickets to the Thursday night show.
I wonder why two British bands, in Gomez and Doves, who would surely have a fairly large cross-over following, would schedule shows on, or very close to, the same nights?
Fantastic night; fantastic band!
Belted out a fair whack of The Last Broadcast, which was to be expected (not that I am complaining).
Has to be said from the get go that they do "cheat" a bit. Being a three piece band and producing rich, textured rock, they have to. Their keyboardist goes a long way to provide them with the layers to make the songs sound as good as the album versions. The gig is more of a showpiece to exhibit their tremendous song writing abilities.
Only disappointment for the night was that they didn't play The Man Who Told Everything, but they did play the Cedar room, so I am still somewhat fulfilled.
They're in my top 3 current bands. Excellent.

I went last night, and it was one of the most enjoyable shows that I have been to.
Interestingly enough, the band kind of hinted that they felt the show was going a lot better than the one from the previous night (basically they said it was shyte!).

I think their live sound has developed a lot since I saw them at Revolver, in 2000 (given that the Hi-Fi Bar is probably a better venue).
I'm not sure, but they do use backing tapes or samplers for some of the extra guitar, bass and keyboard tracks, don't they?

They didn't play 'The Man Who Told Everything' last night either.
The last song they played, was a new song (I think), and I'm pretty sure one of them said something like "you won't find this anywhere". It was an instrumental piece only.

We were standing near the stage front left and my mate managed to get a roadie to hand him the setlist from the keyboards afterwards. I can find out the name of that tune, as I reckon it would be the same (big rocking number?).
Jimi inferred on Wednesday that they weren't clicking, but that was probably only really from their standpoint. I couldn't pick too many problems (although equipment wise they had some difficulties).
No The Man Who...! I'd be extremely disappointed if I went 2 nights in a row!!

I always stand there, at the Hi-Fi! (Unless I'm sitting on the couches up top, of course! (And I like the changes they've made up there too).
The song was pretty lively, and to begin with I almost thought it was going to morph into "If there ain't no love, then there ain't no use" (which was from their previous incarnation, of course!). It had a pretty, big-rocking yet synthy sound (synths sounded like New Order).
I wouldn't be surprised if it's a new track that they've come up with recently, maybe for a b-side or the next album.

Yeah, apart from one string breaking, there were no technical hitches last night (although, I'm not really sure if the vocals may have cut out for a few seconds at one point). There was only one moment, where I thought they didn't 'click' properly (between a chorus and a verse, somewhere).
I kind of get the impression that the guys really love what they do, and at the same time are depreciative of their efforts, and therefore may say they played shyte when really no-one else would notice.
That was one of the things that I enjoyed most about the show, that they all seemed to really be getting into what they were doing, and loving it - loving the songs they were playing and just enjoying the fact that they were there doing it for the fans as well as themselves (without making you feel as though they were just putting it on for the show's sake, or "trying" to pull of a "big show").

I was pretty happy with the song selection, and they played pretty much all of the songs that I wanted to hear (except for a couple). Likewise, the set was a good length, as they were able to cover a lot of stuff and keep momentum, without fading or dragging things on.
Still, when you have a favourite song from a band, it's always disappointing if you don't hear them play it when you see them (but even better if they do and it's a rare/old track!).
I'm kind of surprised they didn't play 'The Man Who Told Everything' once, especially considering it was a single, and kind of a favourite of many fans. I was thinking they may have saved for the last song last night.
Maybe there is a reason that they didn't play it? I was thinking about whether or not the arrangements may be a bit tricky (in trying to build up as many layers), but they seemed to handle most of their songs pretty well in the regard. (Or they could just be sick of it too, I guess!).

Yeah, Radiohead haven't played Let Down for years at their gigs!
Maybe just sometimes some songs that are great to listen to, are just frustrating to play.

'Let Down' is one of my favourite all-time songs. Seeing that live in '98 was simply amazing. I think Radiohead stopped playing 'High and Dry' many years ago too (although, apparently they'd been playing it since before 'Pablo Honey', anyway).
It's funny how some bands won't play great songs, for various reasons, yet other bands rely on one or two songs in every show.
For instance, Eddie Vedder practically tries to get Pearl Jam to play 'Corduroy' in EVERY show (well, it is 'the' Eddie Vedder song, I guess, and a classic too), and apparently the rest of the band hate it for this fact.
