What a fantastic time this is for Geelong supporters. We have lived through many high’s and lows over our years of supporting the Cats, and we all remember the high hopes of the late 80’s and early 90’s, an era in which we were so close yet so far.
Recently, we have seen our side make an unexpected finals appearance in 2000 which gave us high hopes for 2001, a year in which we were thereabouts at times, but produced a horrible last 5 weeks that really put a dagger through the heart of the long time loyal Geelong supporters.
2002 presented us with a year in which expectations were low, but hope was still high. We could not have asked anything more of our boys so far this year, and this 7 week extravaganza has been exciting to watch. I’m very proud of what the Cats have achieved so far this season and hope our form will continue at home against the Adelaide Crows this week.
So, as always, lets get fired up for this match with another ‘Remember When’ thread!!
In our last Cats v Crows remember when (round 2), I analysed our very first ever win against them at Footy Park in round 3, 2000. That was a fantastic win against the odds (and with Gary Ayres on the receiving end!!). For this rounds Adelaide ‘remember when’, I was intending to analyse our match against them at Kardinia Park in 1992 when Geelong, fresh from kicking the leagues highest ever score against Brisbane at Carrara a week earlier, once again toppled to 200-point mark to absolutely trounce the hapless Crows. But this game was already discussed at length quite a bit in our last thread, so for this thread, I am going to another great win we had against them – in 1997 at Kardinia Park, the day we honoured Paul Couch after his retirement.
REMEMBER WHEN – We honoured champion footballer and 1989 Brownlow medallist Paul Couch after his retirement before Geelong thumped the eventual premier Adelaide at Kardinia Park in round 13, 1997?
A good crowd of 20,236 were at Kardinia Park on a pleasant Saturday afternoon to pay their respects to one of Geelongs favourite sons, Paul Couch. Couch made his debut in 1985 and kicked 203 goals as a centreman/midfielder. His honours included the 1989 Brownlow Medal, best-and-fairest seasons in 1986,1989 and 1995 and All-Australian selection in 1991 and 1995. He represented Victoria six times, played in 18 finals matches and was part of four unsuccessfull grand final teams.
The Game was Geelong v Adelaide. The Cats had made a good start to 1997, and had reached the top of the ladder after round 10. But two losses to the Bulldogs and Hawthorn since then had the Cats fall to 4th on the ladder and needing another win to stay in touch. Adelaide were second at the time, and were ready for a finals charge. Couch did his lap of honor pre-match and then all was in readiness. The Cats burst our of the blocks and led by a whopping 36-points at 1/4 time, leaving the hapless Crows scoreless. The Cats held out the Crows who were going with the wind in the second quarter, and booted 2 goals to their 3 to go into half time with a commanding 28-point lead. After an even third term, the Cats consilidated by booting 6 more in the final quarter against the wind to just one, to run out convincing 56-point winners (110-54).
Geelong 6.3 8.4 11.6 17.8 (110)
Adelaide 0.3 3.6 6.9 7.12 (54)
Goals – Geelong: Lynch 3, King, Colbert, Brownless, Sanderson, Hocking 2, Sholl, Mansfield, McKinnon, Steinfort. Adelaide: Modra 2, Jarman, Smart, Edwards, Bond, Johnson.
Geelong moved to second place as it more than doubled Adelaide’s score. Adelaide coach Malcolm Blight was highly critical of the fact that 13 of his players had less than 10 possessions for the match... and by the way: LET US NOT SPEAK OF ‘THAT’ FINAL AGAINST THE CROWS LATER THAT YEAR IN THIS THREAD!
On conclusion, Saturdays game is a very important one for the Cats. Suddenly expectation is a little higher, and it will be the first game in a few weeks we will go in as favourites. It will be live on TV and there should be a big crowd at Skilled Stadium. I’m looking forward to being back at home this week and expect a good match – with hopefully the mighty Cats prevailing!
