I have heard a couple songs by the band "Tool" (Eulogy & Aeniema) and think they are pretty good hard driving songs. Are these tunes pretty much indicative of the rest of their material? and what would be their best album if I was to buy one of theirs?

Eulogy is a bit more groove oriantated than alot of their other stuff. Great song though.

Aeniema is Tool by the numbers. Massive arrangement, breathtaking musicianship, awesome vocals, mind blowing lyrics.

Mate, my advice is to start from the beginning and go from from there! Seriously! EVERY Tool release is awesome in its own way and shows a significant developement from the last (although perhaps a little less from Aeniema to the latest though)

Undertow is still my personal favourite if a choice must be made, only because the attitude on it is dirtier and the prodcution a little more old school. The playing is a little more musical also and its just a mutherf*cker of an album! But seriously, every release starting from Opiate to the latest is well worth the time and effort!

If I were to have only one of their albums, it would be Aeniema.

This album almost has a commercial quality about it, which is peculiar given Tool's style. That's not to say that is in anyway less technically brilliant. Full of awesome pumping metal as typified in Eulogy, Aeniema, Hooker With a Penis, 46 & 2 etc..

With Lateralus, they have ignored their "commercial-esque" style (verse, bridge, chorus) style to have songs that build toward peaks. There is much to be loved about this album, but it takes longer to get into. Songs like The Grudge, Parabola and Lateralus though are absolute crackers and reminiscent of the hard driving songs you have mentioned.

Undertow is a gem of grinding, dirty metal. The only song they played of this at the last concert was the opening with Flood, which is a grinding acid/dope kind of metal. Prison Sex is one of my favourite "fire up" songs.

Opiate would be the last one I would get, but it does lay the ground work so that you can see where the band are coming from.

I consider this band to be in the top three metal bands of all time, along with Black Sabbath (with Ozzy) and Metallica (with Cliff).

Like Carlos said, start from the beginning and work through to Lateralus. Personally, my favourite song is Jerk Off which is on Opiate, but every album is a corker, and has different styles.

Get into 'em!

Well I just bought Aenima at JB today (on special too $18.99). Thanks for the advice. Haven't taken it off the CD player since I've home. Great CD So far the standout tracks for me are Eulogy, 46 & 2 and the title track.

Judging by the lyrics of the title track I don't think they are a big wrap for LA somehow!! :D

Are Tool American? If so what's with the German language song?

Some very sound advice for you there oh-my-hat ... I'm more of the Carlos school of thought - get it ALL. In particular make sure you own Undertow at some stage ... But then again it's like choosing which of your children you love more really ....

They are actually from LA. LA is one place I really have absolutely no desire to ever see and I can understand why they hate all the pretentious crap that goes on there.

Die Eier Von Satan is a recipe (don't ask me, I don't know why!). Here's the translation.

"The Eggs/Balls of Satan

Half a cup of powdered sugar
One quarter teaspoo salt
One knifetip Turkish hash
Half a pound butter
One teaspoon vanilla-sugar
Half a pound flour
150 g ground nuts
A little extra powdered sugar
... and no eggs

Place in a bowl
Add butter
Add the ground nuts and
Knead the dough

Form eyeball-size pieces from the dough
Roll in the powdered sugar
and say the Magic Words:
"Sim sala bim bamba sala do saladim"

Place on a greased baking pan and
Bake at 200 degrees for 15 minutes
...AND NO EGGS

Bake at 200 degrees for 15 minutes
...and no eggs."
