With the coming of the Telstra Dome and the proliferation of white anchors with "Alinta Gas" on them, it occurs to me that an enormous amount of public money is wasted by monopolies advertising their products, which we have to use anyway.

I know Telstra isn't a monopoly any more, so it sort of has an excuse. But Water Authorities, local councils and the like seem to just waste money, er, like water.

Does it irritate anyone else?

I can't see why Telstra should go for the naming rights of stadiums - they're already a strong brand name in Australia.

The utilities, on the other hand, might be a bit different. I know that whilst Alinta Gas is primarily a West Australian distributor (and I don't know what the competitive situation is like over there), over on the eastern states, we've got a number of utility companies competing against each other. The market has gradually opened up and we can switch suppliers for things like gas and electricity.

It's all about maintaining a high image and stopping your competition from gaining one.

yeah companies like coca cola and nike spend more than 90% of their profits on advertising. well its working isnt it!!?!?!
