Ok, keeping with the music threads.
Best Concerts you've been to.
Just to kick it off. Not in any particular order.

Motley Crue - Girls Girls Girls Tour. Probably the loudest concert at the Tennis Centre Ive been to. Yes, even louder than Moterhead at Festival Hall.
Kreator - Renewal Tour. Awesome atmosphere. The Palace was rocking that night I can tell you.
Body Count ( Ice T's Hard Rock Outfit ) - Cop Killer. Unbeleivable. At Festival Hall. Found myself in the mosh pit with the home boys. I walked out with one shoe that night. PS. Cypress Hill were supporting that night. A trip to the toilets was quite a "Flying High" experience If you know what I mean ;)
Anthrax - ( I think it was the Persistence Of Time Tour ) - Entertainment Center. Had to stop the concert about 4 times. People doing the stage diving thing and all. They walked off at one point as someone was gonna get hurt.

Special Mentions :
Pantera
Sepultura
Stryper - To this day, have had the best live sound Ive ever heard at a concert - EVER !! up there with Kreator and Slayer for quality of sound.
Slayer ( unlucky to miss out, these guys are such Pro's. )
Ice Cube
Iron Maiden ( 2nd Tour, unfortunately I missed out on their first concert tour - World Slavery Tour )

Muse last year at Rod Laver in November and Festival Hall in January.

Tool last year at Big Day Out and the Music Bowl.

Battles this year at Big Day Out.

Saw COG last night in Ballarat, they were brilliant although there were technical difficulties and the crowd was lame-o, mainly due to it being an all ages gig.

Shihad put on an awesome show as well, very under rated band.

Trivium at last year's Big Day Out was madness, loved it, even played Master Of Puppets.

Metallica were great as well a couple of years ago.

Seeing Queens of the Stone Age next month at the Palace and V Festival, so they will most likely be at least, close to my favourites. Saw them at the 2003 BDO and they were brilliant then.

Also can't wait to see Air at V Fest, their first time in Australia.

If someone claims to have seen Nirvana in Australia and/or Kyuss when they opened for Metallica in 93 (I think) in Australia and apparantly blew them off stage, I will be entirely jealous.

trevagreene, when you saw Sepultura, was it with Max? That would have been unbelievable. Also, seeing Pantera must have been brilliant too, especially seeing Dimebag.

Yes, Yes and Yes. Dimebag was great ( RIP )
Totally agree about Kyuss. First time I had seen them and they were excellent. Very Impressed.
Slayer's supporting act - Sacred Reich were also great. Not quite as good as Slayer, but certainly up there.
PS. Didnt see Nirvana.

Best was Aerosmith and KISS were very good twice.
Honourable mentions to Faith No More (awesome), Garbage (their last gig and was quite amazing), ZZ Top, Metallica, Pearl Jam and The Darkness.
Dishonourable mention to Dire Straits.

Bloody hell, if there was one band I could go back in time and see, it would be Kyuss, no doubt. They're such an under-rated band, and the fact that they came to Australia and I never saw them, well, let's not go there haha, even if I would have only been about five years old.

I'm listening to ...And the circus leaves town right now, such a good album.

Dishonourable mention to Dire Straits.

Saw Dire Straits back in the 80s. Was struck by the fact that the musical arrangements were a dead ringer for the studio albums. Add to that Knopfler's refusal to talk or to engage the crowd and that the concert was held at the Music Bowl with no video screen, and we may as well have been listening to the radio. Otherwise an efficient and technically sound performance if somewhat uninspired, but hardly disastrous as you suggest.

Didn't ever see them on home soil, but saw Kurt, Dave, and Krist headline the '92 Reading Festival.

Awesome.

(This was the famous show where legendary UK music journo, Everett True, pushed Kurt on to stage in a wheelchair and surgical gown.)

True, but I know a few 'potheeds' (aka pot-heads) and most them have a shit taste in music, but, the ones that do know Kyuss, also refer to them as 'god'.

Best gig in terms of atmosphere was Grandmaster Flash at a block party in Montreal. They actually closed off a huge blok up on The Plateau for the gig. (Night before was Bryan G from V Recordings for all the drum n bass heads)

There was also a Prodigy set in a Boiler Room at the Showgrounds, must have been 96 I think. That was good. As was the goey.

I remember at that BDO being absolutely flying on the go and being determined to see Billy Bragg before the Prodge came on.

There was also a Goldie set in a Boiler Room (which by this stage was more of a tent) in 2000, maybe 2001 that completely rocked.

I saw LCD Soundsystem (with Hot Chip) as support at The Vault here a year or two ago. That went off too.

Dancing, chemicals, and quality electronic acts......a sure fire recipe for some memorable nights.

The most dancing (that wasn't fuelled by synthetic drugs) that I have ever seen at a gig would have to be the time I went to see Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens at the Palace. Everyone in the joint was grooving. But saying that, everyone in the joint was stoned out of their minds.

Speaking of which, anyone used to go and see Kia Kaha play at the Sydenham in Richmond ?

Great place to purchase some quality weed back in the mid 90's.

My favorite performance was probably Tool at the 2007 BDO.

The day itself was rubbish. Just alot of time spent trying substances to attempt to brighten up the day, but I had 6 weeks off work coming up and a kid arriving within the week. First time I'd seen Tool, and not even the arseholes in the crowd could ruin it. Found my own little pocket of space (helped that I elbowed a bloke on the chin after he kicked me in the face), and had a ball.

By far, Muse, at the Hordern Pavilion, a couple of years back for the 'Absolution' tour.

Closely followed by David Bowie's 'Reality' tour, the same year I think, at the Sydney Ent Cent. I recall an absolutely bitching version of 'Under Pressure' with his back up singer.

Also, had a lot of fun a long way back at The Prince Of Wales (St Kilda) methinks, with Tex Perkins... first half, Beasts... second half, Cruel Sea.

Interestingly, I had the opportunity to hang out with Tex (and the delightful Mr Tim Rogers) at the Australia Day concert at Bimbadgen Estate, Hunter Valley this year with Jimmy Barnes, Archie Roach/Ruby Hunter, Diesel, The Baby Animals (the delectable Suze DeMarchi planted a beauty right on my lips-heaven) etc. He swore blind the above gig never happened- he is wrong.

Actually, the above gig is a music highlight for me too.

I have seen thousands of gigs, some outstanding, some were a complete waste of time.

Some standouts for me in no particular order...

X The Australian version featuring Ian Rilen and Steve Lucas... when they were "on" best live band I have ever seen.
Ministry 1995 Big Day Out (Sydney) and the following night at Selinas... the most brutal live performances I have ever witnessed
Radio Birdman Manly Fishos Club, October 2005
Killing Joke Caught them live on both their Australian tours - simply sensational
Neil Young I don't need to say any more
Clutch Stoner/blues/metal stuff - mind f*ckingly awesome live
Ween 3 hours of magical musical mayhem at The Forum a couple of weeks ago
Died Pretty totally transported me and the audience at the Don't Look Back show at The Forum a few weeks ago
Ian Rilen and The Love Addicts In the year or so before Ian's passing
they were the best rock band in Australia - look out for a new album release shortly that was recorded before his death.
Muse
The Bellrays Any band capable of blowing Radio Birdman off stage are definitely up there. Don't miss them on Tuesday night @ The Corner
Beasts of Bourbon when in their malevolent mode (usually when the band members are fighting) they are a brute force of jaw dropping intensity
The Stooges enough said
SixFtHick Twin headed rock n roll hydra from Brisbane that leave nothing in the tank... I love seeing bands that actually scare people in the audience with the ferocity of their performance... you can usually be guaranteed blood, sweat and beers and some damned fine rock n roll!

That's enough from me...

Jimmie Vaughan at The Prince a few years ago with Louis King opening was magic. The cool meter was off the charts that night.

AC/DC at Rod Laver in early '88, bit blurry that one.
Placebo at Festival Hall was an awesome gig in a sound engineers nightmare of a joint. Pulled it off beautifully.
Bob Geldof and Band at The Bridge in Mildura in the early 90s was fantastic as he was getting back to a trad Irish sound, turned me onto Shane Macgowan and later Christi Moore.Big fan.
Saw You Am I before they were anyone at the Mildura Showgrounds with The Divinyls headling early 90s. The band was the original 3peice and Tim was in his Pete Townshend guitar flailing stage. Absolutely blew everybody off stage that night and they were the opening act. ******* brilliant.

Okay, bashed out a list.

Start off with my favourite festival shows....

* '92 Reading Festival - Nirvana, Public Enemy, PiL, PJ Harvey, Shonen Knife, Nick Cave, Teenage Fanclub, Mudhoney, Buffalo Tom, Pavement, Leatherface, The Charlatans, The Wonderstuff, and the mighty Redd Kross.

* '94 Big Day Out - particularly seeing The Breeders, Teenage Fanclub, Smashing Pumpkins (m'eh....but around "Siamese Dream", so still good), and, of course, The Ramones basically one after the other on a beautiful sunny afternoon in my home town.

* Also, one-off BDO props to……The Dirty Three on the 3RRR stage in ‘96, Urge Overkill on the same stage a couple of years earlier (surprisingly, they rocked it like demons, and their dedication to fashion on a stinking hot day was beyond admirable), New Order on the main stage about four or five years ago (not sure it was a superb set or anything, but it fulfilled a long held wish to see them live), and……The Jesus Lizard (’96), Shihad (’96), Sparklehorse (’99), Ash (’99), Joe Strummer (’00), Hardknox (’00), Peaches (’02), The White Stripes (’02), Millencolin (’03), PJ Harvey in the same year, and humble locals, The Seaweed Gorillas, who put in an absolutely awesome lunchtime show once at an early BDO.

* ’96 Summersault festival - Pavement, Jawbreaker, Rancid, Beck, Bikini Kill, and then a killer performance by The Beastie Boys to finish the day.

* ’06 Laneway Festival – Broken Social Scene, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Hold Steady, Les Savy Fav, Augie March, New Buffalo, Wolf And Cub, and The Avalanches (even though the last act sucked dog’s testicles on the day).

So many to choose from however 4 stand out.
The first one was a truly great evening which will never happen again.

Pink Floyd in Melbourne 86.
There was no support act as Pink Floyd played for 3 hours with a 15 minute interval in between sets. The entire audience were just blown away.
Gilmour was at his brilliant best and it was a night I will never forget.

Pearl Jam at Rod Laver was simply outstanding. PJ play different sets every night but the set of Melb 1 was truly outstanding and the band delivered with such passion. It was like being at some monumental experience as the crowd knew just how huge the occaison was and were involved right from the start.

Muse at BDO . Wow what a band. Absolutely outstanding. Simply one of the best live performances one is likely to see . From start to finish they were clean, sharp and action packed. Without doubt the hottest live act in the world today.

Tool. Possibly the greatest live band there is however you probably need to be a Tool fan to appreciate it. The songs grow live. This is a band serious about their music and when they play live it is a new experience for the audience and for the songs themselves.
To see Danny Carey play drums live is worth the price of admission itself. He is one of the greatest drummers of all time and takes songs to a new level when playing live. What he does can only be done by the very few. An absolute monster of his craft but there is so much more here. Jones reached out on his guitar , Chandler is one of the best bass players there is and Maynard has a brilliant voice for the big stage. He can really get his feelings across in his vocals.
Tool are simply one of the greatest live acts ever.

It's been great reading these lists of gigs people....................so many memories for me from alot of them too.

I find it really bloody hard to single out gigs as "best ever". All are memorable, with some being because they were shithouse of course!

So, to avoid doubling up on gigs already mentioned, the following come to mind:

Foo Fighters - a couple of years ago at Rod Laver Arena. They were on fire, the crowd stood and jumped around for the entire gig, and I had no voice at all left by the end of it.

Tone Loc - Saw he and his "band", which consisted of a DJ and a couple of unbelievable rap dancers, on a stinking hot night in a club in Brisbane in the late 80's, right at his peak. The joint rocked!

Queen - About March or April 1985 at the old Glasshouse (now the bloody Lexus Centre) on the back of their huge Live at Wembley concert. They were at their peak and Freddy was still alive.

The Baby Animals - About 1992 at the Palais, just before the split. Simply awesome and........well............Suze is summed up above (and I'm drooling about that kiss).

KISS - At VFL Park in 1980, with the Prima fight, and again with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Dome in about 2002. They bring the child with the posters up on the wall out in me.

Roo-sistence - A double up but who cares???? A simply sensational night of emotion pouring and releasing, and I'll never forget it (thanks also to the fact that I've kept the Something For Kate and You Am I albums up loud on my car stereo ever since..........where they'll stay too).

The Smithereens - At The Palace in the mid to late 80's. I bloody loved that group from NY, and still do.

Under 18's Concert - Remember those gigs? Held at Festival Hall and always included up and coming Aussie bands as well as major international acts. My first one was in about 1981ish, and included The Divinyls, The Sunny Boys, Split Enz, and someone else. Every one of those gigs was sensational, and live in my memory because I was around 13 and very impressionable at the time.

The B52's - At the Glasshouse again. Leaning up against the stage, dead center, and being one of the few people there old enough to know every word of every song, pre dating their latest commercial release of Cosmic Thing.............I was on fire that night in about 1990 or 91!

AC/DC - Around 1980 at The Sydney Myer Music Bowl, when the riot occured.

The Sharp - Live at Lenny's, in Glenelg SA, in the early 90's. Memorable for a whole lotta reasons not even associated with music. Great night!

Midnight Oil - Many of their gigs were sensational but the most memorable was that one at Kooyong with the mat fight!

Guns n Roses - Calder Park, early 90's, wet as. What a night!

Simon and Garfunkel - Early 80's at VFL Park. I think my dad's still searching for his car (they switched the entire carpark lights off a few minutes after the gig and 65,000 people were wandering like nomads in the dark)

Mick Jagger - The Corner Hotel, late 80's. It had been years since the Stones had been here and Mick was on fire in his solo career. A mate got word that he'd be playing a pub gig, which wasn't advertised, a few days before their main gig at the Tennis Centre. We got in bloody early and couldn't move, jammed up against the stage for the next 14 hours (doing a Fevola into empty stubbies for relief). An unforgettable night for sure!!

That'll do for now. Alot of great gigs were related to the timing of them, the atmosphere on the night, and the people you were with. There are hundreds...NO, thousands. I love just about all live music (bar most country).

I'd give my entire nether regions to have seen Jeff Buckley's gig at The Lounge dammit!

About five years ago I was chatting to my mum about a few old things I had stored at their place.......................including every ticket stub from every concert I'd ever been too................she goes "Oh, that box of stuff? Nah, we threw that out when we moved years ago. I thought it was just junk":eek::eek:

I've never recovered! F%#K!

Alanis Morrisette -1996 at Rod Laver arena, she was the biggest artist in the world, Taylor Hawkins ( Foo Fighters) on the drums. On a side note, in the same row a few seats down, were a couple of North Melbourne players and their partners, Archer, Stevens and I think the other may have been a young Adam Simpson.

Liquid- 1998- Shizenhousen

Van Halen - 1998, Rod Laver arena, with Gary Cherone ( Extreme ) on vocals.

Utopian babies- 1998 They were ok.

The Brian May band - 1998, The Palais. Enough said:thumbsu:

Shihad - 2007 surprisingly pretty good and loud.

Evanescence-2007 Vodafone arena, awsome, Amy Lee brilliant voice she can sing underwater.

I'd like to see this tested. To be certain, we should have her down there for a long time and see if she can do it with an old stove tied to her ankle with barbed wire.

Actually it was the Dr Feelgood Tour in 1990 trevagreene. I agree... girls, girls girls EVERYWHERE!! :p Sound was 11 (without distortion) on a 10 scale.

AC/ DC also rate highly on sound quality. :thumbsu:

Seen Midnight Oil a trillion times and I don't think any of their gig's is any better than the last.. Quality!! I break out in a sweat dancing like a nutter after the show opener and soaked half way thru the gig.

The recent Tesla show last Oct was AWESOME.. intimate venue down in the basement in Swanston street... can't recall venue name.

hoping to catch Tim Rogers this year.. one of my 'bucket list' items to tick off.

seen over 20 international acts many times over.. not enough local acts. :o

My very first concert was way back in 1973. Slade and Status Quo at the showgrounds. Slade was the main act. It was pouring rain. No-one cared.

I remember I had to beg and plead to be allowed to go but I was under age and strictly forbidden from going.

Went anyway. One of my best all time memories.
(not as good as 75 & 77 though)

"Darlin be home soon." still one of me all time fave songs.

Status Quo were my first concert in 1975. They rocked in the early-mid seventies :thumbsu:

The Cure last year Adelaide Entertainment Centre: These guys play guitars like i never seen before, very loud and played non stop for 2 hours and 40 minutes before doing two encores "do yourself a favour" even if you are not a fan you will not be dissapointed

Linkin Park Adelaide Entertainment Centre: Had been hanging out to see for years so was good to see them make the trip

Jamoraquai Adelaide Entertainment Centre: Jay Kay has incredible stamina, or drinks a lot of raspberry cordial

Pearl Jam Memorial Drive: $35 bucks to see this band during its most successful era was awesome

INXS Old Lion Hotel: 3 rows from the front; 2500 people packed into a pub, i reckon i lost 4 kilos that night and my T shirt i wore stood up by itself the next day once it dried out

The Angels Thebarton Oval Ausmusic Festival: Was not a fan at all but was surprisingly impressed

U2 Memorial Drive Love Comes to Town tour: Saw both shows the first night Bono fell off the stage but still kept singing. The second night they actually played a different set which i thought was extremely clever

I could add a couple more INXS gigs and three others but i would go on to long. I still have all the ticket stubs somewhere as i used to use them for bookmarks when reading.

First concert i ever went to was Devo at Memorial Drive 1982 and then proceeded to slowly collect their entire discography in the next year

Saw INXS at Blazes in Perth 1981 for $3. They burned. Also Mother Goose at Blazes with a stage show to be remembered. The band had mini trampolines lined up and jumped off them into the audience. The singer had a habit of stealing patron's drinks and either skulling or spitting them.

Angels at Perth Entertainment Centre, really energetic. Same with Devo in 82 with their continued movement and screen backdrops, great band :thumbsu:

Motorhead supported by Sepultura at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam early 2005 - most mullets I've ever seen outside of the southern US but awesome all the same.

Greenday at Festival Hall on a steamy night in March 1996 - the mosh pit was absolutely seething.

Any of the Painters & Dockers gigs*, especially those at the Espy.

TISM supported by Died Pretty at the Old Greek Theatre in the late 80s.

* except the one where I tore a patella tendon stage diving.

The Hi-Fi Bar?

Though I am only 24 years old I feel I've seen some sterling musical performances in my day.

You Am I at Meredith 2005 was pretty sweet. I'll remember that one for a long time...played till 2 in the morning or something. Everyone felt the love of BF's own 'boner' that night ;)

Queens of the Stone Age in 2002/03, in their fullest, mightiest force ever. Saw them at the V Festival on Saturday also...excellent gig, but nothing near their former best.

The Jesus and Mary Chain were bloody excellent. Music that moves like a locomotive, a sound that's as low as snake sh-t but as loud as buggery. Damn good. They've mellowed in their old age...they used to play 10 minute sets in the 80s, with gigs known to end up in full-scale riots.

I'm sure more will come to mind...

But, for anyone who doesn't yet know (and I'm sure we all do) pound for pound, dollar for dollar, Tim Rogers the best performer I've seen. I know there's a certain bias here, but I still haven't found a performer who is as good, value for money nor as accessible as Tim. Bloody good.

Most of their chartered classics.. mostly from MT & TGRC. Although they touched on some from 'Psychotic Supper'. 'Bust a Nut' tracks didn't get a look in.
The band was super tight.. they threw in a cover of UFO's Rock Bottom which went off.. wild reaction !!

Saved 'Little Suzy' for the encore.. my Tesla fav track :)

Hilly was also there... came down to melbourne but I didn't know he was there until two days later.

Metallica at festival Hall circa 1988 or there abouts on the 'And Justice for All' Tour. Just bloody brilliant!

Seen Midnight Oil many, many times but the most recent down at the Palace in St Kilda was amazing! Had the big spinning wheel and whatever song was spun they played! No set structure like so many of today's bands who do the same thing night after night!

The Angels at Juice Nightclub!
Not a great venue for a live gig, but they rocked out hard!

Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing Patti Smith at Hamer Hall... and it blew this jaded rock pig's mind.

Her voice and presence were amazing - her band were maestros (included her long time guitarist Lenny Kaye and her son Jackson on keys/guitar).

This show built and built until an encore climax of Rock N Roll N*gger. Other highlights for me were her cover of Are You Experienced (interwoven with some of her poetry), Dancing Barefoot, and Gloria.

I am blessed to see hundreds of performances a year and this one knocked me out - performances like this demonstrate the true power of rock n roll. No fancy props, cutesy dancing, hot girls etc - just pure talent, emotion and power.

If any of you get the chance to see her on her current tour - do it!

EDIT: F*cking swear filter - wouldn't let me post the word n*gger - damn these days of political correctness.

If someone claims to have seen Nirvana in Australia and/or Kyuss when they opened for Metallica in 93 (I think) in Australia and apparantly blew them off stage, I will be entirely jealous.

I guess you need to be entirely jealous - I saw Nirvana at the first big day out in Sydney - very impressive and a couple of years later I saw Kyuss blow Metallica off the stage at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney.

KISS - At VFL Park in 1980, with the Prima fight, and again with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Dome in about 2002. They bring the child with the posters up on the wall out in me.

AC/DC - Around 1980 at The Sydney Myer Music Bowl, when the riot occured.

I attended the VFL park show and the Myer Music Bowl show - for weeks after the Kiss gig there was a sudden explosion in the number of fire breathers in the school boarding house.
