The reason we are struggling and have done for some time is our abysmal efforts early in the draft ie. the 1st rnd. I received this info today in an e-mail which is pretty ugly reading. If we are going to improve we are going to have to get some bodies into the football department that knows how to recognize talent.

“If you take a look at the whole list of first round picks:

Kayne Pettifer - Round 1 (pick 8) 2000 - Jury still out
Aaron Fiora - Round 1 (pick 3) 1999 - Jury still out.
Pat Steinfort - Round 1 (pick 16) 1996 - Senior Games 0
Damien Ryan - Round 1 (pick 11) 1994
Justin Murphy - Round 1 (pick 3) 1993 - 12 Games with us, traded for Harro & Pick 35 (Brad Smith) in 1995.
Wayne Hernaman - Round 1 (pick 7) 20 Games
Anthony Banik - Round 1 (pick 1) 49 Games
Allister Scott - Round 1 (Pick 13 - traded by Geelong for Trevor Poole) 19 Games.

Chris Naish - Round 1 (Pick 5) 143 Games
Richard Lounder - Round 1 (pick 1) 4 Games
Richard Anderson - Round 1 (Pick 4) 0 Games

Naish the pick of the lot so far (scarey thought)

And the guys traded for 1st and 2nd Round picks...

Craig Biddescome & Rory Hilton for 1st (pick 8) and 2nd (pick 24) 1998
Ben Holland traded from Fitzroy for 1st (pick 16) and 2nd (pick 32)
Steven O'Dwyer Traded from Melbourne for 1st Round, pick 3 (Darren Kowal) in 1991
Terry Keays Traded from Collingwood for 1st Round Pick 4 (Jason McCartney) in 1990

Also strictly speaking you could say Clinton King was traded for a first round selection. We traded Steve McKee for Pick 3 and Collingwood traded Clinton King for Pick 8.

We did get one win from a first round pick.

We did get Ottens Round 1 (pick 2) 1997 - traded for Pick 5 (Luke Power) and
Pick 21 (Clem Michaels) & Chris Bond.”

Yeah i reckon Holland, Otto, Fiora and Pettifer are the standouts there. Obviously Can'tkick King was tied into the Fiora deal.

We should get 2 from the top 4 picks and hopefully they are invested wisely. Don't trade them for Bradley and libba.

It may be more objective too look at all draft choices to see where we get the most success. However, looking at all our first round selections, it does seem pretty ordinary. How long has Beck been there? How many of those is he responsible for? How does his hit/miss ratio stack up with other clubs?
