If you haven't noticed the sticky at the top of the page the rules of Bay 13 are posted here :
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=423395
If you have a question on the rules of Bay 13 and their application, or have a suggestion on how Bay13 could be improved feel free to post them here.
Constructive criticism is welcomed, but remember though this thread is not a bitch session to whinge about other posters or infractions or moderators or .....

I think everyone is doing a top-notch job.
moderators will automatically apply appropriate infractions against posters who display pornographic, obscene, or offensive imagesThe idea of "offensive images" is a pretty grey area.
You've given a pretty good list: Down's syndrome, faeces, two dogs, dildos...
But a while ago, I drew the ire of many people when I posted pictures of war casualties in the Day's Since thread. I had my reasons for doing so, but I was slightly surprised by how upset some people got about it. True, the pictures were shocking, but I wouldn't class them as offensive. But others obviously did.
Where is the line?

What about this?
I find this picture offensive and those who continue to use it should be carded.

Applying these rules is an inexact science
:thumbsu::D
When you consider that every rule is breached in every thread and by every poster at one point or another, then you could definitely say it's an inexact science.
Hat's off to the Bay 13 Mods for applying common sense and looking at the context, history of poster and nature of thread. Back in the dark ages, prior to Bay 13, infractions were very arbitrary. Things got a bit out of control on the Main Board and the infractions and thread moderation resembled a weekly military offensive. I'd get suspended for the most innocuous things and also be very surprised about what I was able to get away with. All it would take would be one complaint from some half-witted narc and I'd be out of commission.
But I'm surprised at how many thinly-veiled drug slurs slip by unpunished.
Big Footy rules can be draconian at times and yet many people flagrantly breach defamation laws.

How many shades of grey am I allowed to have?
In my short time as mod, pictures have been the hardest to judge and to be honest there is no correct answer. For every picture that someone would like us to delete there is someone else ready to scream power trip if we do.
Ultimately it's a judgement call that I try to be as consistent on as possible - Bay13 is about giving posters a bit more freedom to express themselves but it is necessary to pull people back from time to time.
Let me assure you it's not as easy as you might think - especially when you need to delete something that personally you find funny but know it is offensive.

First off the poster wasn't carded for the drugs reference in his OP - that was originally removed without an infraction. In his infinite wisdom the poster then chose to put the deleted comment back in his OP, big note himself for doing so and then accused a mod of abusing his powers.
He already had infractions and had been warned to be careful in future, took no notice so he was given a red card.
The thread was then closed because it had gone off topic and wasn't adding any value at all.
As far as the drugs issue is concerned, his post was in poor taste and was deleted accordingly. As much as I hate reading jibes about the Eagles, there was an issue there and people are free to comment on it provided it doesn't breach BF rules. West Coke Eagles is no more objectionable than Carltank or Ninthmond and the like.

Threads that appear to be in anyway gloating, celebrating or deriving some form of satisfaction from an injury to a player will be deleted as soon as we see them. Instances of threads in extremely poor taste or posters who repeatedly start such threads will receive an infraction as part of the bargain.
Does this mean we won't be able to pay out some more on Carlton's expensive recruiting blunder when Chris Judd's dodgy groins force him out for an extended period later on this season and cut his career well short?
I would've thought you'd be up for that, Eagles fan and all.....;)
Is it OK if we just limit the laughter and abuse to Carlton, while offering commiserations to Judd on a most unfortunate injury?
Please?

We don't make the decision to move the threads - it is done by admin.
We usually try to identify the threads that get passed down by changing the title but some slip through and that is probably the best we can do.
Bear in mind that Bay13 is set up to allow for trolling and the threads that do get moved are appropriate for our board, although obviously not of the same outstanding quality of our home grown threads(;)) - they were just started in the wrong spot.
Not everything gets automatically sent to Bay13 either, there's still threads that get deleted from the main board straight up rather than get sent here. Just imagine how bad they are.
fishguts
27 Apr 2008, 14:18
Would it be possible before the thread gets moved here, that admin could show you the thread, and if it has any potential it gets moved here, however if their is none, it gets deleted.
Keyser Soze
27 Apr 2008, 17:00
It's a time thing really - there's just not enough time to allow that to happen - admin haven't got enough spare time to look at a thread, pass it on to us Bay13 mods and then wait for a response before deleting it or moving it.
One thing I will consider though is to be a bit more ruthless when deciding whether a relocated thread should stay in Bay13 or close or delete it instead - that I can do. (remembering though that by sending it Bay13 rather than deleting it outright admin have already demonstrated that they feel there is some merit to the thread)
As mods we also don't want to be judging the quality or otherwise of a thread - we should only be stepping in when it breaches the rules - posters aren't always happy when their thread is deleted either.

I'd like to be afforded the same luxury KangaWho's supporters have been with their arrogant and smug attitude towards their fake membership numbers and their divine right to be in the AFL.
I'd like to know that when the Kangawho's officially die and fold that I will be allowed to tell them they were all wrong and stick the knife square in their guts and twist it without double standards being in place and me being banned because of it. If they dish it out they should be able to take it when their club does inevitabley fold no matter how much pain they are in at the time :thumbsu:

I've got something to say. I've noticed a bit of to-and-fro between tigerboyz and H2F, and have since learned that tigerboyz considers himself a bit of a 'Net Nanny'.
Since I was a wee fella I've grown up with the admittedly juvenile-sounding notion that 'dibber-dobbers wear nappies'. While the wording is questionable now in my life as an adult, the notion is still as sound as it ever was. A grass, a snitch, a lagger, a dobber, a squealer.
None are popular in most social circles.
'I'm telling on you!' was one of the most common phrases I heard whilst growing up, and one of the most hated. Telling on someone is a dog act, one of the lowest of the low. It's against the Code.
Dobbing is just... not... the ... done... THING, tigerboyz. Feel free to tune out if you find something on teh internets offensive, but squealing aint gonna get you any respect at all, boyo.
I'm Geelong_Sicko, and that's my two cents.
This was posted in another thread, but I'd rather address it here.
Dobbing , squealing etc is not a trait many Australians condone, however, the reporting function is an important tool in making sure Bigfooty operates smoothly as it brings posts to our attention that may need to be removed for various reasons.
Often it will only bring forward the inevitable as there is a fair chance that eventually a mod or admin will come across the post anyway - but the longer an inappropriate post is left the more problems it can cause.
That said, telling all and sundry that you've reported a post or deriving satisfaction from another poster being carded because of a post you reported does not sit well. I rarely, if ever, get any satisfaction from handing out an infraction but it is a part of what I need to do as moderator - it is not something to be gloated about.
Well maybe a little bit sometimes.;)

Should there by a judicial system set up on Bigfooty where those given Red and Yellow Cards have the right to an appeal?
I believe we should have the same set up as the Match Review Panel. The accused can present their case to a group of senior moderators who then need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intent to cause offense or if infact the accused has caused offence. If you lose your appeal you spend extra time on the sidelines.
I believe this is a fairer system than what we currently have where moderators are allowed to give yellow or red cards whenever they see fit. Ofcourse with mods, they have different levels of interpretation which may not necessarily be consistent with each other.

How come bushie failed to reserve a Red when breaking an IDENTICAL Rule to WCE929406?
Is this currently being attended too?
Has it simply not been seen it?
Does Big Footy accept that WCE929406 ban should be revoked to the "bushie precedent"?
Are rules applied evenly too all posters?

Considering that the poster in question....and his girlfriend(90210).....thought it fit to constantly post pictures of the Austrian kidnapper/paedoplile in direct correlation to me at every opportunity they had.
Not to mention the constant and completely unwarranted, ( and highly offensive), posts which labelled me as a racist.

Application of Rules
Applying these rules is an inexact science and we as moderators will consider context, the history of a poster and the nature of the thread among other things when determining whether the undefinable line has been crossed. We may also just be in a bad mood.
The above should answer your question Poida.
Rule breaches are rarely EXACTLY the same and there are many factors taken into consideration when issuing infractions.
Posters are also not privy to any PM's warnings or minor infractions that are given by moderators to other users - in short you do not know the full story.
I will and do give posters a bit of leeway if they show some value to Bay13 (as you well know) whilst others do not display any credible reason to provide such license.
Now before you decide to respond, this thread is for discussion of the rules and not to discuss the merits of any treatment handed out to specific posters or any poster full stop.

Why bring Farmer into this?
Oh that's right. You have nothing else. No-thing.
Why bring your homosexual fantasies into the thread?
Here. I'll remind of the Off Topic crap you spewed in the thread after I simply asked Questions about the Rules in the "Questions on the Bay13Rules Thread"
Missing ya missus already? :(

Starting Threads
When starting a thread be sure that your opening post contains some form of discussion to start your argument off. Simply posting nothing more than "Discuss", "Thoughts" or similiar as your opening post will land you a nice yellow or red card. Use the search function too - multiple threads on the same topic clog up the board and push other threads off the front page, so have a look before hitting "Submit Thread" that someone hasn't already thought of your bright idea before you.
Further, do not start threads about other posters as these invariably end up turning ugly and create more work for us. The FLOG and POTENT MIND of the month threads have been set up to provide an avenue to pass judgement on the quality of a thread or post should you so choose.
Threads that appear to be in anyway gloating, celebrating or deriving some form of satisfaction from an injury to a player will be deleted as soon as we see them. Instances of threads in extremely poor taste or posters who repeatedly start such threads will receive an infraction as part of the bargain.
Remember also that this is a FOOTY forum, so keep your threads (and posts) football related.
If you start a thread in error you can ask us to delete it if there aren't too many posts added or close it if there have already been quite a few responses.
Hmmmm that's an interesting one, wouldn't it be nice if that rule was actually adhered to.

You are calling me Racist because you are the one who discriminates against people because of their Skin Colour? How could one possibly argue with such logic?

You show me where I have discriminated against people because of their skin colour on this forum.
What you will find is that I stood up for a group that were being discriminated against....purely because of their colour.
You didn't like that and ignorantly labelled me as racist.
You want people to have equality across the board??
Like I said before.....
Show me this equality that you believe already exists in Australia....and I will show you up to be a liar.
No problem.

Whether or not there is Equality. Treating people differently because of their skin colour is Racism.
If you discriminate against someone via word or action. It doesn't matter if they were or were not treated equally 2000 years ago. It' still racism.
Are you saying we should treat certain people differently based on their skin colour because they were not treated equally before?
So say 400 years into the future. A group of people who were persecuted because of their race/religion whatever should be treated differently because for example: "back in 1800's my people were treated bad so now I deserve better treatment that you!"
That is RACISM summarised to a tee!
You don't fight Racism by inventing more Racism. It's just a cycle breeding more racism and division.

Part V—Powers of the Parliament
51 Legislative powers of the Parliament
The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Commonwealth with respect to:
(xxvi) the people of any race for whom it is deemed necessary to make special laws;
The Australian Constitution which the population enacted gave the government powers to do this very thing. Is it racist?

That sagacious response from Keyser shows what a natural he is at the mod job.
I want to reiterate that we can't read every post, and glean every inference or discern every insult from every thread in Bay 13.
The report post button helps us, but by no means compels us, to respond to problem posts. Therefore it is a major aid in the improvement of the board.
If you are reading the board and you see something that you feel is beyond what you would allow, or worse; detracts from the enjoyment of the thread, then let us know. We have to use our judgement, so some reported posts will not be altered, others will incur a red card, most will be somewhere in between.
The most significant problem is personal abuse of other posters.
Flaming may be deliberate, or simply done out of disrespect, either way abuse or flames often get a response - usually of a similar quality (or lack thereof) and the whole thread heads off-track.
When this happens, I want you to report it. Keyser, Rusty and I want to keep threads flowing and enjoyable.

I'm sorry that you are. I leave it at that.
I don't take anything on the internet personally. Some people do!

NOT, taking an issue, like racism, seriously, (at any time), says volumes about the character of the human being in question.
And I too, will leave it at that!!

Questioning someone's sexual preferences or suggesting they perform sexual acts with or without someone else will run the gauntlet of good taste. So again choose your comments wisely as what may not be offensive to you may be for someone else.
In light of this information I take it we will now being seeing less Hawks posters trying to make gags.

Those with a keen eye may notice there is a few less posts in here all of a sudden.
The little off topic debate which had no relevance to this thread has been moved here - http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=449629
I decided against deleting the posts as there was some worthwhile discussion in there, even if it was better suited to the SR&P board.
The thread will remain locked however.
Now remember this thread is for questions on the Bay13 rules.
