View Full Version : Carlton to be #1 in VIC within a couple of years

Collingwood:
McGuire/Malthouse is now a boring, tired and stale combination.
Lack of high profile players, together with a few years of fringe 8 performances will be nothing to get excited about.
Already selling off some of their pubs due to interest rate rises.
Overrated bunch of youngsters that they are deluded about "We wouldn't trade Thomas for Judd!"Essendon:
Bit of excitement with the appointment of a new coach which won't last when the results don't follow.
Fletcher, Lucas, Lloyd will be retiring in a couple of seasons.
Overrated group of youngsters.
Club will continue to stagnate.Carlton:
New administration and board.
Another record membership this year which will break 40,000.
Young coach that the media love and always want to speak with.
In terms of young talent have the cream of the crop.
Have the best midfielder in history which is a marketers dream.
Unstoppable momentum.

Prelim final is pretty close to be something to get excited about, and the fact that we made it that far without high profile players is a statement in itself.
Already selling off some of their pubs due to interest rate rises.

Here's why they won't...
They have no backline.
Have drafted just midfielders and a ruck with three number 1 pick.... did not invest in a fb or chb. Shocking.
Spending too much on and injured judd. At the moment he is no longer the best.
Teams like Hawks have plentiful of k.p.p, which has set them up.
Fevola is getting older.
Have too much pressure on their midfielder for the high draft place. Dont have the right types of midfielders that other teams have.
Their president is involved in price fixing
they have a Losing culture

can the standards cliche's about how hard the team trained during the pre-season possibly be mistaken for 'momentum', even by the blindest of supporters?

It's hard to tell, especially with that "unstoppable momentum" bit.
The biggest teams in Victoria over the next few years will be Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda, because lets face it, they are the only ones capable of winning the flag in that time - which is all that really matters.

I am sure he means "biggest" in terms of memberships, sponserships, and revenue. In which case who knows, he may very well be once we start rising. We are doing pretty well thus far for a team that has had no success for a while now, and I think what he's saying is that once on-field success comes, a lot more people will jump on board.
As for our on-field success, in a couple of years I think we will be making up the 8, however as will Collingwood and Essendon I believe, and as they are both seemingly ahead of us atm, lets wait until then before we start saying we're better.

i think alot of people dont realize the confidence issues carlton players have. alot of the young players haven been in many winning games, and yet they seem to still do alright in comparison to the likes of thomas and pendlebury and selwood and priddis who come into winning sides and dominate. I think judd might be the difference in winning a couple of games for us, but the confidence he will bring to the young guys in the team will be the big improvement, not necessarily this year but the years to come. Although i dont agree with the number 1 vic team tag. I think lately we've started to see the process turn around and teams such as geelong and sydney breaking premiership droughts, i think this trend might continue. St kilda still have that window, alot of talent thats never been truely reached. Bulldogs the last couple of years have been there abouts near top 8, hawthorn are an excitement machine, richmond and essedon both have young talent, and melbourne always seem to jump up the ladder every few years with what i think is ordinary lists. I think carlton may become and force again and not the AFL easy 4 points round, but to say we will be #1 is a big tag to put on a fairly inexperienced side

In terms of assets, Hawthorn is the richest Victorian club.
Not to mention one of the biggest sponsorship deals in the league.
We even hame more members than carlton to date, we're over 31k, 9k up from same time last year.

Essendon, Collingwood and the Hawks are the only sides in Vic that have +10 m in net assets, Geelong is 4th with around 7m.

Oh but wait, you won the NAB Cup right?
Average forward line?

Hawks forward line kills that
Not in my opinion.
Cloke is the figure head of our forward line, Franklin is yours, I'll give you the nod in that one but it's pretty close and both are young stars of the competition.
But where Collingwood overcomes your forward line is we have A-grade class crumbers and goalsneaks around our tall forwards, Didak, Thomas, Medhurst, L. Davis are all super-dangerous around goal and Hawthorn as nowhere near that much class in smaller forwards.
Collingwood is closer to Hawthorn in tall forwards than Hawthorn is close to Collingwood in small forwards so we got you covered. ;):thumbsu:
But where Collingwood overcomes your forward line is we have A-grade class crumbers and goalsneaks around our tall forwards, Didak, Thomas, Medhurst, L. Davis are all super-dangerous around goal and Hawthorn as nowhere near that much class in smaller forwards.
Not so true. What you seem to be forgetting is Mark Williams. Just because he is not a crumbing forward, doesn't mean he isn't a small forward. He is a small lead up forward, who kicked 60 goals playing that role in 2006 before he did his knee last year.
I also think it would be very foolish to write of Cyril Rioli having an impact this year, just because it is his first season. He showed enough in the pre-season to suggest that he will be very comfortable at AFL level this year.
Medhurst, Davis and Thomas are all very hot and cold and while their best is extremely good, their bad is very bad. Haven't the Collingwood supporters being telling us all year as well that Didak is going to be moving into the midfield this year and will give you an even stronger midfield. Can't have it both ways.
Like you admitted, Franklin has the edge over Cloke, for mine Roughhead is already the equal of Rocca and is far fitter. They have a very handy third tall forward in Boyle, and extremely talented small lead up forward in Mark Williams who is capable of kicking 50+ goals a season, a very promising and talented small crumbing forward in Cyril Rioli.
So I would say that while overall Collingwood's forward line is more even and slightly better performed to date, Hawthorn's forward line on raw talent is superior in my opinion.
But to bring it back on topic, they both shit all over Carlton, just like these two teams shit all over Carlton and will continue to for a number of years.

Yeah good points, concur on all of it except that Davis, Thomas, Medhurst off days are very bad, they all good players and all always offer something, they are never atrocious.
Like all goalsneaks they have hot and cold days but they are good defensively and usually find a goal or two each even if they are down.
I'm not completely convinced on Mark Williams, I would be if he kicked 60 again, it would be impressive beside Franklin, and I don't think Roughead has the presence of Rocca just yet but is talented.
Collingwood have Reid and Rusling in the wings, pretty good talents, Rioli is proming but 0 games but I do agree Hawthorn has an exciting if not proven potential forward line set up.
Franklin is the only one who has announced himself and their forward line isn't settled down yet but if they get it right they will do well. :thumbsu:
And yes, both forward lines and teams for that matter shit on Carlton's. :D
Hopefully you guys and the Tigers and Demons knock those chumps back to where they belong this year, I have a tip you will see this year.
Chris Judd's stocks are falling way down this year after a year with the Blues everybody is going to see that he cannot do it by himself, therefore he is not as great as a lot of people think he is, and he'll just be another frustrating mug to Carlton supporters, not 'The Messiah' he is now.
