View Full Version : BigFooty's Top Ten Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Albums
Ok, here's the deal...
I'm seeking to compile a list of the top 10 HM/HR albums as the title suggests, mainly so I can burn CDs for friends and stuff like that, but I don't want to rely on my own personal biases - it's better to give a cross-section of different styles and tastes.
Anyone wishing to help me out with this, regardless of musical tastes, please PM me a list of your top 10, and I'll assign point values from 10 down to 1, and after a few weeks, post the results. But please keep it under the rather broad blanket of heavy metal and hard rock (no Phil Collins does NOT count despite him making the cover of Kerrang in 1985!)
Alternatively, you can post here if you want it to be a discussion (ie. argument) thread... :D

OK Darky I have a question.
Although I am sure to embarrass myself entering a discussion where my knowledge is perisously close to SFA, (nothing unusual I hear you say), but how do you rate Metallica's .....And Justice For All?
I don't own many really heavy albums, but of my **** ant collection, this one is my favorite.

For material, it's my favourite Metallica album, but the sound on it SUCKS!!! There is no bass at all, and Lars's drums sound really tinny... as if he were tapping on a saucepan and a couple of newsapers instead of a drum kit.
For my money, it's the only thing that stopped it from being regarded as Metallica's landmark album instead of Master of Puppets, and is now looked upon as being the bridge to their commercialism on the follow-up because it contained the single "One".

Again, I am not going to discuss sound and all that **** because I don't know what I am talking about. I know what I like, and that is it. "One" ***** me to tears. My favs on that album are are "To live is to Die" and "Blackened".

This is where I get a bit confused as to what constitutes Hard Rock, Heavy Metal etc. Has anyone read Chuck Eddy's Book Stairway to Hell: the top 500 metal albums of all time? Not only does he include Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and the like, he includes the Ramones, the Dictators, hell he even includes artists such as Miles Davis, Neil Young, Tina Marie, Funkadelic, Love, the Kinks....you get the idea.
I'll have a stab although some of these records might not be considered HM by some people. However all of them do have loud and fast guitars, so what the heck.
1. Funhouse-the Stooges
2. Tyranny and Mutation-Blue Oyster Cult
3. Long Live the New Flesh-the Eastern Dark
4. Go Girl Crazy-the Dictators
5. (I'm) Stranded-the Saints
6. Road to Ruin-the Ramones
7. Love it to Death-Alice Cooper
8. High Time-MC5
9. Distemper-the New Christs
10. (Tie) Living Eyes-Radio Birdman with Overkill-Motorhead
Hi Darky,
No point in me writing a list.....it's going to be ALL Metallica. And considering I have ****e all knowledge of what category most bands are in, I'll give you no more help!
:D

I have not included Zeppelin.
If I did they would have taken up 7 of the top ten.
I see Heavy Metal as steming from Black Sabbath and as Defender pointed out, there is a branch off the "heavier" sound (Metallica, Motorhead) to a more melodic style of metal (eg. Iron Maiden, Malmstien). I am obviously into heavier.
Zep would have to be called hard rock if you had to classify them, but in my opinion, that would be lumping them as a Tripple M band, which to a unit as perfect as Led Zeppelin, would be the gravest of insults.
I think the definition of metal and rock is a hard one to distinguish between.
For instance, and album such as 'Gish' by Smashing Pumpkins is certainly flavoured along the lines of metal giants such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd (well, I even find it hard to classify PF as one of either metal or rock! ;)), but in it's own time, was quite different to the metal being produced.
Does this mean that it's still metal, or less metal?

Let's just settle on the fact that none of the aforementioned artists play Bluegrass! :D

(Not necessarily in any discernible order, other than my rambling thoughts...)
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Coroner - Punishment for Decadence
Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Emperor - Anthems
Cradle of Filth - Vempire
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Death - Symbolic
Tetsament - First Strike Is Still Deadly (Re-recorded 1st & 2nd album - truly awesome FWASH METAL!!!!)
Regarding classification and categorisation, for example, if 9 out of 10 people voting say Nirvana's "Nevermind" is in their top ten metal albums.. who am I to say it's not metal?
In the end, a genre is based on what the general populace determine it is.
So if you think Tori Amos is metal, then I guess you're entitled to vote for it (just before you seek some serious help). The only reason I originally asked people to keep it metal, is to stop them from listing basically their favourite 10 albums because it justifies another Beatles or Beach Boys rant.
I reckon the voting will take care of itself.

nirvana is not metal..id say grunge is where that one fits..same with smashing pumpkins..they dont fit under the metal or hard rock umbrella even if there are heavy bits mixed in there..same with janes addiction, tool and the like..
then again i guess it can be argued that def lep are not metal or hard rock either? more so pop..i guess their metal/hard rock roots
inspire me to add them..i like all styles of music but have definate leanings to metal and hard rock..i love the 80s style more so..theres always gonna be the other side of the coin..nirvana in style was always breaking out of the 80s..in fact puting down the 80s

Agree with a few of your selections, althogh I haven't made my own top ten as yet.
As for Rising, it will NEVER be surpassed. Ever. Number one by the length of the straight, in my opinion.
Ok....lets go back in time......
1. Led Zeppelin 2 - Led Zep
2. Electric Ladyland - Jimi
3. Live in Japan - Deep Purple
4. Montrose - Montrose
5. Van Halen 1 - VH
6. Corridors of Power - Gary Moore
7. Flowers of Evil - Mountain
8. Back in Black - AC/DC
9. Pyromania - Def Leppard
10.Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
One could go on and on............
Righto, I've given this a bit of thought (just a bit, mind you!) and at the risk of contardicting any previous top 10s/20s etc... here goes :
1. RAINBOW - Rising
2. Uli Jon Roth - Transcendental Sky Guitar (more neo-classical than metal, but I haven't been able to eat a steak since my jaw first dropped two years ago upon hearing this motherf**ker).
3. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny (if this was a big Brett Burton speccy, it'd be one of those that "would win the car ANY other year". Unbelievable album, there just happened to be a couple better!).
4. Iron Maiden - Killers (not much wrong with this album, not much wrong at all).
5 - Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges (if not for the cookie monster vocals, with which I don't have a problem, these guys would be as big as Black Sabbath for their sheer riffery. I think I just invented a word.)
6 - Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell (no Ozzy, no Sabbath.. my f*cking arse!)
7 - D.A.D. - Riskin' It All (all killer, no filler)
8 - UFO - Force It (just ahead of its predecessor Phenomenon this is riff after crunching riff, Mad Micki turns every song into a guitar ****. i love it.)
9 - Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow (a couple of so-so tracks, which might suggest it's not a top 10-er, but the strong tracks with Uli Jon Roth's guitar work more than make up for it).
10 - Deep Purple - California Jam (Tried to keep it to studio albums so that the material is basically one batch of songs, but I could NOT leave this baby out.... and the video is even better than the CD!)

;)
(Agree with Arch Enemy though!)

I'm still in the process of compiling the CDs for friends, so this goes back up to the top to remind a few notable absentees to cast their votes.

I have ALL of these albums and they are all fantastic, almost faultless. Couldn't squeeze them into my top ten, only because I have 10 that I like more.. mine could just as easily have been 50 or even 100.

This, I just gotta laugh at. I paid a fiver for this one and was disappointed! They aren't even good at doing hands-across-the ocean-type soft arse power ballads anymore!

Allright Darky, I'm getting onto this. I've seen a lot of albums listed here that I consider more blues than metal and more pop than metal. Now, I'm not criticising just highlighting that we all see these things differently. Having also said that, it's time we saw some hardcore ****ing top 10's.

Now there's a thought,
Just for the hell of it, why not list your top 50?

I suppose it's like Sheahan and Walls doing their top 50s... people don't so much read them to find out who you rate, they read them to pick faults with how you've rated them. Just leaves the author wide open for nothing but criticism.
Having said that, I'm game! Gimme a day or two. :D

I really didn't want to answer this thread, but a last minute SMS has forced my hand :)
Choosing my BEST 10 is impossible, so I'm going to just quickly spring out some names & probably forget a bucket load.
I'll only put 1 entry from each band-
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys 1 & 2
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Tobias Sammett - Avantasia Part 1
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Alice Cooper - Killers
Pink Cream 69 - Electrified
Scatterbrain - Here comes trouble! (ah what the ****)
Forget a bahjillion albums, so this is a fairly dodgy list- so bite me.
