I don't know if they had it on elsewhere, but on Channel 10 Sydney last night, they had a special on Elvis Presley. I've never been a huge fan of Elvis though quite like some of his songs and Elvis himself, when he was not strung out on drugs, seemed like a decent bloke.
It was an interesting documentary, they spoke to people close to Elvis, such as Priscilla, former girlfriends', maids, bodyguards, etc. It gave a pretty good insight into his interesting, and in latter years, increasingly weird life.
It was a shame his life went downhill and ended the way it did. Seemed there were several factors which contributed to his demise: Colonel Parker's unrelenting management, booking Elvis into rigourous tours despite his drug addiction and bad health; Elvis' own reluctance/inability to give up his unhealthy addictions such as fatty food and drugs; and the doctors which continually gave him prescription painkillers dispite his obvious addiction.
I learnt a few things I never knew about him before, he was born in a small town in Mississippi to working-class parents and had some Native American ancestry; moved to Memphis, Tennessee when he was young, where his listening to black r&b musicians proved a big influence on career; and received a guitar for his 12th birthday and the legend began!
It was an interesting documentary and Elvis seemed like a pretty cool guy though, I don't think I ever become a follower of one of Elvis' religions which have sprung up after his death. ;)
