What cliches do you often hear in regards to music? (Whether it be something that someone says about music, or the music itself).

To start the ball rolling:

"I liked their earlier stuff . . ."

"Their old and outdated"

I ****en hate it when people describe a song as "having a good beat".

I guess it's a cliche, although it's rarely uttered these days when a band plits up because of "creative differences". Usually a euphemism for "We were all taking different types of drugs."

To quote the Gurg...

"I like the old stuff better than the new stuff"

THE PHRASE: "A departure from their earlier work."

THE TRANSLATION: It blows big. They've lost it. They are starting to believe their own hype by releasing crap like this. They would have got away with it too if it weren't for those kids and that dog.

THE PHRASE: "A ground breaking work."

THE TRANSLATION: Same thing everyone else is doing. Yet one of the band members sucks so bad that it is audibly noticeable.

THE PHRASE: "An amazing breakthrough first album."

THE TRANSLATION: They're new. They suck. Someone has spent a lot of money producing and marketing them.

THE PHRASE: "I tried to reach an inner place, and find a new direction when I wrote this song."

THE TRANSLATION: The guy who normally writes my songs quit. I found someone else to do it for me.

THE PHRASE: "Reminiscent of "X" but don't be quick to make judgements. This is all original dynamite."

THE TRANSLATION: This is the guy who quit writing songs for the person in the previoius phrase. Thinks he can make it big because "X" was successful singing his stuff. Problem is, he writes well, sings like shyte.

WHEN E. VAN HALEN SAYS: "I finally found a singer who is like a soul mate. We hit off right away musically."

HE REALLY MEANS: I wish I still had Davie Lee Roth

WHEN OZZY SAYS: "Ah funl ahhv @#&$# gehtaarrr *&#$@ uhhm dwerr.

HE REALLY MEANS: Once again, I've excersized my uncanny ability to find a really good guitar player. However, no one can ever replace Randy.

"They've sold out"

"The albums a real grower. Got to give it time and listen to it as one whole piece of work, not just a collection of songs.."

In other words, its a bucket of an album with only a couple of good songs on it but if you sit through the whole thing, your head will be numbed so greatly that you wont notice.

"Player "X" really impresses you with what he doesnt do, more than what he does...."

In other words, he/she is a crap player and is only barely capable of the holding it together rather than being even remotely creative.

One I hear quite often.

"Gee that Carlos bloke sucks arse"

Sorry dude, but it is muttered quite often. What you think is a whisper of appreciation and admiration, are actually muffled laughs, and many unsavory put downs.

Again, sorry.

The band is getting back to their roots/basics.

Translation : the last two albums were rubbish and they are trying to clone the success of their debut CD.

"A stripped back sound"

The Hitman

"It'll take a few listens for it to grow on you."

Only one album has ever done that, and it took Radiohead's Kid A. I'll be damned if I don't like something straight away that I will at all.

"Self-indulgent".

For most rock critics, this seems to be defined as any song that contains more than three chords, a guitar solo, and a drum fill.

This can cover any celebrity marriage, but you hear it all the time after a break-up with a muso and an actor/actress "due to irreconcilable differences, they have decided to go their seperate ways. However, they will remain best friends" Craaaappp oonnn!!!

Hmmm, Sammy came and went...took VH to #1, not once but twice.

The other cliche everyone loves to hear.....

...it's more bluesy than the previous albums....

"Groundbreaking release"

The songs/production are a rehash of something that was released 20 years ago but those buying it aren't old enough to have heard the original.

....usually meaning they are ripping off the Beatles.
