Not an actual side but just naming a few in different areas... might get some discussion going from all teams.

Backs - bright, magnusson, linton, kairns, martin, thorn(new), lubke(new)

Mids - mcgoldrick, acreman, travvy, older(new), harrison, glowacki, foley, mentha, donovan, quinn, lyons

Forwards - goring, carroll, king(new), connor, woods(new), hedditch, bunworth(new)

Rucks - millar, matt harper(new), mcinneny

13Cabs you named 28 players in an earlier post but since you believe you will run out with a full strength side on friday who would you say would not make the cut out of the above for this game?

Think we will pick our best available side for Friday, and the rest will play Sunday. Might even have an extended bench with some guys playing a half in both games. Either way there will be some pretty handy footballers going around Sunday, not sure how good Albanvale are but it could be a decent game. tige not sure what the name of the ground is, but its at sunbury... the team from the Ballarat Footy League. Not sure of the kick off but i reckon about 6 - 6.30ish.

The game is at Clarke Oval, ill be there for a look, interested to see how Sunshine go. Sunbury have lost 11 players from there starting 18 from last years GF side so they will be a 7-8 goal worst team than last year, should be a good match though.

Any word on whether Venner is still having a run around at Hoppers?

Venner played a little more than a half against Werribee last week, played mostly forward. Have heard from a reliable source that the 'big scary guy" would struggle to play two's at any of the other top sides in the comp? Also how will Dougies working arrangements fit in with his footy? It was also mentioned that the former West Footscray Captain was spotted in negotiations with a a hoppers official, surley thing cant be that desperate at Hogans Road.

Your source is way off the mark, "the big scary guy" is 6ft3 and a unit, he knows only 1 way and that is to attack the ball and the man, he wears forwards like a 2nd shadow. Would play seniors at any club from WRFL.

Seems like you know the grounds up sunbury way well and moody is from darley, maybe tige you are actually moody and your trying to pump yourself up a little....if not so be it but does seem strange that your posting how big and strong moody is and has heaps of tatts, seems like your trying to put up a bluff...
So whats the story with dougy thomas, have heard he will be 20 days away with work then back for 10 days and so on,if so he will miss alot of games but qualify for finals....if true.

St Albans are keeping there cards very close to their chest at this stage.
should be a ripper game next friday night under lights at Kings Park against Albion i am expecting a big crowd this could be really good for the wrfl with plenty of people from other leagues coming to have a look.
one thing for certain is that St Albans will have the strongest forward line in the comp with Fitzpatrick, Swadiak, Spooner, Bakoulous, Craig and Arena and the midfield rotating through there with the likes of Hollow, Dawson, Ford and Pisani

Brilliant, forward lines are great, they always look good at training, brilliant warming up, and pacing about, but do you have a midfield/half back line to deliver the ball to them?
If the ball isn't down there, the forwards are as good as garden gnomes!
I don't know any of the guys mentioned...... so do you have a mid field to give them supply?

St Albans will have the best midfield they have had in a long time the blokes i mentioned are all quality footballers and add aguis, garing and fitzpatrick and as anyone who knows footy will know that only a couple of new onballers strengthen a team beacause it pushes blokes to the flanks and there will be a couple more addittions to the midfield that i cant mention

Most of the top teams can boast a pretty decent forward line, hence why they are the top teams, bcos they kick more goals than the opposition. Spotty's isnt too shabby with McGhie, Keenan, Molan, Isbister, Patak and Langlands sure to cause a few problems for opposition backs.

From the sounds of the previous posts, he will be one of many forwards that will have to be targeted if anyone is going to stop the colts. I personally would like to see him in the midfeild. Also lets remember the colts have been consistently very good over the past 3+ seasons he will just make them even better! the other 17 on the ground just need to make sure they do not become complacent and rely on him soley...as for clarke in love I thnk its a done deal - maybe the cougar will need to watch out for him in the showers

BIG crisis down at west footscray. 10 blokes on the track thursday night , and talk of not even feilding 2 teams for rd 1 (dont know how there will go for the rest of the year). its got seddon written all over it. ground is in poor nick and 1 senior coach has already walked out off the place. ive heard that evans and geddes after all their talk of committment and loyalty and to just walk out in a time of need especially from these 2 have been told by west never to put their foot in the club again. just with so many players getting out there must be something seriously going wrong down there .

The Frenchmans a fool, i was there last night. 31 on the track and West will actually have at least 40 out there for an intra-club match on Saturday. The unders 18's have about 25 players and play a practice match before it. Don't know about Geddes and Evans but.

Yarraville are playing against Kilmore at Kilmore. Yarra's ground is in mint condition they sowed summer grass through it about 6 weeks ago and are about to sow a winter grass over it to keep it together so in a few weeks will most likely be the best ground in the comp.

Frosty-Gun, saw him have 40 plus touches and take about 25 marks one game. Probably the fittest I have seen at his peak.

John Theodoris- 80's Albion was a class above everyone else in a very strong side. Think he may have won a comp b and f.

Austin McCrabb- took over 20 marks every game with ease.

Frosty by a mile - glad to have gotten the chance to play with him.

Chris "Pistol" Phelan was a freak. Not super fast but managed to make space in a pack like you wouldn't believe. First game i ever played with him he got tackled from behind because i was spectating with my mouth open rather than putting on a sheppard.

I know alot of people use this term, but how do you play 6 qtr's when a qtr is a division of 4?
should the terminology be "6 terms or periods"

He didnt fit into our team structure and culture, he is too slow, fat and foot skills were on the decline last season, also a few alleged incidents involving him, an albion player and two of berwicks finest ladies didnt help his cause. So after a long chat with the coaching staff and commitee they came to the conclusion that if he wanted to continue playing senior football its probably best he did it interstate, because we are pretty confiident no team in victoria would want him back.

Paul "Puffa" Phelan from late 80,s and early 90's was our best. Wonder if he's related to Pistol?

Like to get peoples opinion on who is the best local player they have ever played with, against or seen in their career.

Obviously Frosty is up near the top but i once played with and against a bloke named Mark Power from Sunbury but he came from the SANFL and was just heads above the rest.

A guy called Shane Fell (Kingsville) was very good in the late 80s kicked a heap of goals in a short time. Played in a good side including James ''Bull'' Perkins and Mark ''Abbo'' Dawson. Im pretty sure that Fell went on to play for Sydney after Kingsville. I played in a game where he kicked 17 goals.

Scotty Evans (Seddon) won a couple of premierships of his own boot i think both against Spotty which is always good.

Only joking Walshy.

Dave Weston - played most of his career at Coburg when they were not affiliated with Richmond. Fit, tough, skilful football. 5 cm too short to play AFL. Made you stand taller when he was around.

Tim Berzins. Do you know him? I think he plays in Aberfeldies womens team. Apparently he struggles to get near the red, oval shaped ball there aswell. Anyway, its good to see you've taken a step up from carrying the boys bags to and from the change rooms.

Thats right mate, couldnt get a kick in Melbourne so Ive come up to Qld to exploit the locals with my speed and endurance. Cant wait for it. Nah mate, unless your eyes are painted on, you would have read that Im up here for work. As for the ankles, they are getting there mate. Still trying to leak the last of the p#ss out of them.

i met Tim Berzins through a mate about 12 months ago. seemed like a half decent bloke when i first him and i went along to watch a few games of my mates in which Berzins played in his team.
I dont think ive ever seen a softer player in my life, agree with ur assesment Beazer that he should play in a womans team and doesnt get near the ball.

on top of his terrible football ability i then went out with him and my mate about 6 months ago and Berzins honestly thought he was Brad Pitt. trying to pick up woman everywhere, i think he forgot he is only 3ft tall and looks like he has down syndrome. i also know a few more of his teammates who have told me he is a serial pest that irratates everyone.

anyway seeing as i saw his name i thought id have my two cents worth.

I know, that it comes from danny who gets the money.he is the one that nominates what club, so if he did well so be it but i find it highly unlikely.
We would be silly to knock it back and if we did well now danny can get some of it back by playing with us......Personally i think south should have got it all but if he did nominate colts also, i also think we would be mad to knock it back.

yeah actually went down to have a look today stayed for first 3 quarters then it was to cold and wet so left.

very scrappy game of football hard to pick any good players really as of the weather. the highlight or lowlight i should say was number 1 for diamond creek appearing to snap his leg in half in a contest and screaming in pain for a very long time...horrible to see and bad timing on the eve of their 2008 season.

at 3 quarter time hoppers led by about 6 goals.

There is some truth in what you are saying, however our club fought for nothing and received nothing.
There were some at the club that thought the colts may have been entitled to it and that danny may nominate the colts but 100% the colts got zero $$$$$ and that's the way it should be.
Danny was a south districts junior and that's where learnt the game and developed with the help of that club and that's where it all should have gone and that's where it did go....end of story

I also played at districts and will always have a soft spot for them and love to see them do well and i think most of the colts boys are like that, all the animosity between the clubs from the 70's 80's has gone between the current playing list.

Interesting read in the local Werribee Banner this week - the gun journo Diamond is doing well

Rivalries add spice to an intriguing season ahead

http://static.yourguide.com.au/images/viewimages/?image=427045&size=2 (http://werribee.yourguide.com.au/viewimage.asp?id=427045)Big grab: Hoppers Crossing's Tyren Montebruno takes a top mark over his Glenorden opponent last season. RIVALRIES are what make local football fans so passionate and effervescent in the outer.

Just the lead-up to a match against a team which is your club's arch nemesis is like a grand final, even though it could be just a middle-of-the-season fixture. There are times when your tensions just boil over; when you yell something out so ridiculous that you immediately, or later, think 'why did I say that?'

The umpires are usually the first to be ridiculed. Then come the opposition players. It could be just the slightest characteristic of a player, such as his haircut or the way he wears their socks or it could be invoked by a raging bump or tackle fromthe opposition.

This season. the rivalries in Wyndham are building in two leagues - Hoppers Crossing versus Glenorden in the Western Region Football League and Werribee Amateurs versus Old Westbourne in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

The hatred between Hoppers Crossing and Glenorden is starting to creep up on the Richter scale.

Something is about to erupt.

The Warriors are level-headed about it. They know they're successful and they know they will start as hot favourites this season to defeat the former division two premiers once again.

But one word about the Warriors at Heathdale Oval and the Hawks will cringe.

It is the one motivating factor that has all the Hawk players gunning for more this season.

They want to become as fearless and intimidating as the Warriors.

You see it on the training track.

One night at Werribee South beach, the Warriors players ran past the Hawks players' training.

There was a certain feeling there that you either love 'em or hate 'em.

Some Hawks' players stood there with a certain glint in their eyes, half admiration and half desolation.

Former Hoppers player Glenn McGaw is coach of the Hawks and knows what the Warriors are all about.

He could be the man to bridge the gap between the two this season or next.

The Hawks had a steady season last year, impressing in their final match against St Albans and providing some shining lights in their first season in division one. Now, they are ready to build and aim for finals contention.

They have several top recruits, including the Russo brothers Adrian, Justin and Josh, Michael Franklin (Wyndham Vale) and Dean Chandler (Yarraville-Seddon).

Hoppers Crossing, in many respects, has the list to go all the way this season.

The on-field losses of coach Michael Frost and assistant Keenan Reynolds will hurt it.

But it has an abundance of youth that are promising and tremendously talented.

The additions of former player Chris Barry (Donvale), former Western Bulldogs player Brad Murphy (Red Hill), Shannon Downey (Red Hill) and Doug Thomas (Werribee Tigers) will certainly help fill the void.

The Warriors have also added Chris Moody (Darley) and Wyndham Vale Falcons pair Aaron Chavasse and John Drohomirecki.

Old Westbourne is chasing its second consecutive VAFA flag after being promoted from division D3 to D2 this season.

But maybe its biggest moment will come when it takes on Werribee Amateurs, a team which has had bragging rights in recent years to be the top amateur team in Wyndham.

Similarly to Hoppers Crossing and Glenorden, the gap could gradually be closing between the two, with the Warriors confident they can be a finals contender this season.

The two coaches behind the teams - Fab Gatti (Old Westbourne) and Kirk Norton (Werribee Amateurs) - are two passionate men who will be looking to get one up on each other come May 10 at Westbourne School Ground.

Old Westbourne is struggling for numbers in its under-19 and junior teams.

Call Ivan Board, 97493808 if you're interested in sporting the Warrior jumper.

Werribee will face Williamstown in the VFL in the season opener this Saturday at Bartercard Oval in a mouth-watering clash.

When you talk rivalry, there is none hotter than the battle of the west.

The rivalry has heated up this season with the Western Bulldogs crossing from the Tigers to arch nemesis, the Seagulls.

The Tigers finally settled on a partial alignment with North Melbourne.

But what hurts the Tigers even more is the Seagulls snaring the recruits they had on the top of their shopping list.

Former AFL-listed players Callum Urch and Matthew Little signed on at rival Williamstown even though they were offered similar contracts at Werribee.

Get set for a back to the '80s affair that is not to be missed.

Wyndham Vale Falcons have had the most controversial pre-season of the Wyndham clubs.

The Falcons axed Stephen Fletcher just three months after he was appointed coach of the team in what has become a recurring theme at Honour Reserve in recent times.

It was all looking downhill with a massive player exodus similar to the Werribee Centrals last year.

Nathan Evans is now at the helm. He has stated he will have former AFL players David Rhys-Jones and Simon Minton-Connell in mentoring roles, which is sure to attract new players and sponsors.

In February, the numbers at training were lucky to reach eight or nine. Now they have no fears of fielding a team and will be looking to cause some heartache for other division two teams.

Werribee Centrals are adamant they can return to its glory days when teams so often feared to play them in the Geelong and District Football League. The Centurions are strategically placed to have a top season this year after what was a shock introduction to coaching for Cori Andrews last year.

The Centrals, like the Falcons this year, faced an exodus of stars last season, only managing to put in some competitive performances to keep them from the bottom of the ladder.

Craig Hardingham is a massive recruit for the Centurions.

The former Winchelsea ruckman will give the Centurions on-ball division a big boost.

Other recruits are Luke Redpath (Epping), Jack O'Brien (Wyndham vale), Anthony Kitchen (Winchelsea), Matthew Rudd (Geelong West-St Peters), Dale Collins (YCW), Damien Galle (Wyndham vale), Steve Wallace (Wyndham vale) and Shane Tobin (Barwon Heads).

Joel Anderson and Daniel Kretschmer are the only two departures.

TAB Sportsbet's new premiership betting for the GDFL has Werribee Centrals at seventh favourite at at $11 to win the flag.

Corio is favourite, closely followed by East Geelong and Thomson.

Point Cook will field its first under-18 team this season in the Western Region Football League.

Signifying their growth in the league, the Bulldogs have had great success with their junior teams and are hopeful of fielding a senior team in division two next season.

The Point Cook Football Club was established in 2003 and was introduced in the WRFL in 2004.

Last year, it fielded 12 junior teams and this year it will field up to 15 including an under-18s team.

Steve Foss will coach the new under-18 team.

Western Jets had a flying start to the season last year before being brushed aside by North Ballarat in an elimination final.

But the Jets believe they can build on that finals berth and go another couple of steps further this year.

Top-aged forward Nick DiMartino said: "Without trying to spruik, we have got a very decent list. They made the first final last year and I think we've got the capability to push on from that."

Under new coach Steve Kretiuk, the Jets have high hopes this season with several draft prospects on its list of 48.

Former Werribee Juniors player Mitchell Banner will be looking to back up his outstanding season last year which saw the bottom-aged draft prospect win the Barry Round Medal, the Jets' best and fairest award.

Smell that liniment, the fresh paint around the boundary lines and the sweat and tears from pre-season hit-outs. Footy's back.
Don't miss next week's issue for Brent Diamond's comprehensive preview of the Western Region Football League.
