Anybody seen a show there? Is it anything special?

I have a gig there on Saturday night and was curious as to what kind of venue it was.

They should have shut down the Evelyn and kept the Punters Club.

Seen and played many gigs at the Evelyn. Was once a great venue and to an extent still is. I personally preferred when they had the stage on the opposite side to where it is now though. Anyhow, the stage is a great size and the sound (on stage) is usually good. When full, the place has a great vibe about it and really locks the sound in, making it feel a bit "warmer". If not, the cement floors and brick walls makes it feel a bit cold and open and the F.O.H sound is a bit harsh and sometimes thin.

Have a good gig!

The Evil Inn is ok. If Carlos has done a gig there, then i've done 100. lol I prefered it the old way as well, but it's still better than 99% of places around Melb.

And yeah - what Shinners said. (including the disclaimer)

I've played at the very old (when it had the staircase and the little stage), old (with the stage facing away from Brunswick St) and the new (with it facing Brunswick St) Evelyn. Carlos is spot on with the sound though-it stinks with all of the concrete and glass. BTW Stealthy, what's the name of your band?

I HATE the evelyn, i have seen some of my fav bands there, fu manch, grade ect and the bad thing about the nite has been where theyve been held. the bar staff are mostly all snooty and primadonna, and theyre aint many good views of the stage, its also lacking major atmosphere.

Saw Front End Loader recently at the Evelyn. Not a bad venue but I reckon there are better. e.g Gershwin Room at the Espy, Punters, etc.

By the way has anyone been to Cherry (off Flinders lane). Not that good for live bands but they play the greatest music of all time there. There is nothing better than singing "Emotional Rescue" at 4.30am after 15 hours on the sauce. The DJ a couple of Satdy nights ago played the most cracking session of tunes I have ever heard at a club. It was bloody sensational. Sort of like a cross between Hard'n'Fast at Chasers and Gold 104FM (I know you must be thinking I am a looney but I am talking The Stones, The Easybeats, The Kinks, Bowie, Kiss, Guns n Roses crossed with Nirvana, The Ramones The Donnas, The Beasts of Bourbon, Mudhoney etc ). It worked beautifully. Felt like I had died and gone to heaven

I used to go to cherry nearlly every thursday nite for soul nite and pretty much friday/sat depending on what nite i had been to a gig on, have to say that the crowd is definatly alot different to what it used to be...not commentin on whether thats good or bad...just a general observation.

They've changed the stage location three times, it's back to being where it originally was. I too always preferred it on the other side to where it is now.

Punters always had that real indie vibe, which I loved, but the those sticky carpets weren't a great loss ;)
Ah the memories.... my ears are still ringing :D

I used to love the Public bar in North Melbourne (before they changed it) - the room was tiny, but the decor always gave you the feeling that you were in a Bad Seeds video.

ahhh !! good memories ... still people starting their set at 1-2 am ..being able to catch something after everything else had finished ...Looks like crap now .. some tarted up coctail bar !!..all because of the local property boom ..Mr and Mrs Latte moved in 6 months ago and now want the pub closed !! seems to be happening more and more .. how long before The Evelyn , Cornish Arms , etc follow .....we'll end up like Sydney !!!

Sure is. A real shame, it is just sitting there empty. BTW I went to the Evelyn on Friday night to see the Persian Rugs (ex Hoodoo Gurus guys doing 60s punk) and the venue stunk. Overpriced drinks, horrible crowd- I don't think I'll bother going there again.

Rusty says hello back to the best wrestling personality in this hemisphere. The 'novas are getting quite serious and being the old nerd that I am, I have had to put work and the like before the band. God, that's a boring answer!
