What venues do you think are great for seeing a band live?

Most of the shows I have seen at The Hi-Fi Bar have all been good, and therefore, I tend to think this must be a reflection of the venue (as well as the bands who have played, obviously). There haven't been any sound problems, and once you find the good spots to stand/sit in, you can really be in for a great night.

I saw Augie March at the Athenaeum (just behind the city town hall), a few years ago. The venue wouldn't particularly suit a lot of bands, but it suited Augie March's style perfectly, and it was a fantastic night.

I'm getting a bit teary eyed here. Melbourne used to have some great live music venues. Some of my all time favourites were:

the Great Britain Hotel before it was yuppiefied;
the Swan Hotel before it was Tigerfied;
the piano bar at the Prince of Wales before it was close-ified;

My favourite venue these days is the Town Hall Hotel in Errol St North Melbourne. It is tiny but the bands and the music played between them is great. Guiness, Stella and the old CUB standards on tap, good food and normally a great time.

My cousin used to play a regular set at the Town Hall in North Melbourne - used to love going there, it's a fantastic little pub.

Other votes of confidence to the HiFi (too hot, but a great design for seeing bands) and the Arthouse (just has the right feel).

Yep a great pub & I guess it's kind of my local. It's especially great in summer, hot afternoons spent in the beer garden are always fun.

Gotta love those small clubs scenes. I recall seeing the OOOOOills
many many years ago in some paddock small venue somewhere near Laverton. I recall it had the 'Feel Appeal' especially when I got LOVE slapped by some aggressive chick who seemed to enjoy the attention :D

The ol' Cathouse still rates!!

I say Nick Cave at the Forun and that the music and place matched each other beautifully. Great venue

I hate it for that very reason. Likewise, I have never been able to get a good viewing position at any show that I've seen there (maybe that's just been my bad luck though).

The best show I saw there was 'Yo La Tengo' in 2000.
