I know it's a pretty stupid but I was just wondering.

In the earlier seasons, the Simpsons were living in the 1990s. But in a couple of episodes in season 19, it seems they're in 2008.

Homer and Marge graduated high school in 1974 and they've been in their mid-30s since 1988.

It doesn't have to make sense, you know?

hell 1/2 the time Springfield is a coastal town and the other half its in Knetucky or wherever, it makes no sense at all and I dont think its meant to

It's a floating timeline. The characters don't age even as society moves forward. Also...do we want them to?

MASH ran for longer than the Korean War it was set in.

So how about that then.

That's because it was officially in Korea but spiritually in Vietnam. :p

how about the fact homer and marge were in the same graduating class despite a two year age gap between them.

Oh I dunno, Homer's intelligence level could make that pretty believable. :p

Mr. Burns was supposedly born in the 19th century and has also had his age given as 81. Floating storyline makes it all the more awesome.

It's just a cartoon, it doesn't have to make sense.. and it's better that it doesn't. Same goes for stuff like Family Guy and Southpark, it's just plain ridiculous at times but comedy gold also.

Cartoons don't have to be 100% realistic.

That was a great episode :D:thumbsu:

I think season 5 might very well be The Simpsons' best season. Looking over the episode list I think they were all gold. There wasn't even a clip show that year :p

There were a couple of rules when writing The Simpsons I think one of them was to never refer to a particular date. They stretched this a fair bit when doing all those flashback episodes but they never referred to a specific date when referring to the present. In fact there are very few current pop references mentioned in The Simpsons. The only things I can think of are Clinton and Bob Dole in the election. It's a show that almost cannot date.
