View Full Version : Are the Vines worth the hype?

Just wondering what the consensus is on the Vines. Are these guys the saviours of Rock and Roll? Are they a new Nirvana? Or are they just another average band overhyped by the British press?
I've heard the first 2 singles - pretty good but not as good as the Strokes or the Hives I thought. I've only had a quick listen to the rest of the album and it didn't grab me straight away.
So does anyone own the album? What's their verdict?

I was thinking the exact same thing in the shower about 30 minutes ago, and was gonna post about it. Beat me to it, Dom!
Anyway, I think they are a good band, but this talk of it being the best album since Nirvana's Nevermind is a bit rich. I've heard the entire album, and it's a good rocky sound. If I had a spare $25, I'd buy it. However, it's not revolutionary as the Brit press would like you to believe.

Nope.
If you wanna hear worthy rock and roll check out the Panthers, Hot Hot Heat, The Hot Snakes, Murder city devils, Dead Low Tide, the Red Scare,Song of Zarathustra, le shok, the locust, orchid. Theyre are many better bands around then the vines who are fronted by a edward furlong...i look 15..and when i screech, sound like one too lil boy.
Why should anyone take nme and any british press seriously? these are people who still watch neigbours and go crazy over bands like coldplay and oasis. valuim anyone?

I bought the album through the hype made by JJJ.
It was only $18.99 at JB Hi-Fi.
The album isn't bad, but sounds a lot like other British bands. It has a very big british feel. It is actually surprising that they were bagged by a Gallagher as they sound like Oasis!
They have rock numbers such as 'Highly Evolved' and 'Get Free', but also ballads such as 'Autumn Shade'.
In my mind, not a bad album, but wouldn't be in my top 5.
If you like British rock sounds, buy the album.

In a word, NO! As pedrothelioness noted there a heap of rock n roll bands, particularly Australian ones, who crap on all over the Vines: off the top of my head, Hoss, the Powder Monkeys, the Celibate Rifles. Part of the problem for these bands is that they are not young, cute, angsty males and they do not have huge industry backing. The Vines played something like less than 10 shows: all major supports (You Am I mainly) before releasing their album which cost something around $400,000 to record. They are nothing but an exercise in hyping a band.
As for the British Music Press (who started this Vines thing), don't get me started on those tossers: these were the same geniuses who dismissed the Saints and Radio Birdman as not rocking enough, and are now falling over themselves to praise every post-Birdman band (e.g. the Hives, who I do think deserve the praise) going.

Yes, they are Australian, but their sound is more mainstream British rock.

Funny how there's this whole rock revolution thing at the moment isn't it.
You Am I started it ages ago and now we are seeing the resultant effects of it.
Rocket Science, the vines.
Then there's the overseas hype - strokes, black rebel motorcycle club, hives.
It's an interesting time, but as usual NME has labelled it the next big thing. Why do that?
It's not revolutionary and nothing like what Nirvana did to the industry, but its cool. Better than the dross that's pumped out by bands like Scandul's, dare i even mention their name.
The good thing is that its added a little life to the Australian music industry that I thought was becoming a bit like a 'stale bottle of p1ss'.
Australian music, particularly the 'alternative' sort really found its own life in the early 90s, following Nirvana and the expansion of triple j.
But since about 96 - mid 97 that excitement, I think, had died a little and there were no new real cool bands coming through.
Evidence of that was the Big Day Out bill which has had the same Aussie bands year after year - Powderfinger, You Am I, Spiderbait, Regurgitator, even Silverchair.
At least these new bands with a slightly, albeit recycled, sound and hunger are giving life to Oz independent music again.
All power to them.

I admit I have only heard a couple of their songs but going by those they seem good. Might download a few more actually. They're coming to Perth later this year too ...
try this little test when you are listening to The Vines " Get Free " when he sings " come in come in come in "
follow it with
"I'll make you happy ( Just like your mumma wants)"
"I'll make you happy ( just like your daddy said ) "
Hhhhmmmm.....interesting

Vanda and Young missing out on royalties doesn't happen often...
Overhyped IMO, but still good. Interesting watching this garage-rock resurgence!
Definitely not in the same class as the Strokes or Hives.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a class above them all.

No they are from Connells Point in NSW.
I worked with Craig Nicholls and Patrick Matthews in a fast food store (name withheld to save embarrassment)
I quite like them and early demos I heard were definitely influenced by the Beatles as opposed to Oasis (same thing some might say, however this would give Oasis undue credit).
I will buy their album given that I can namedrop but I wouldnt consider them an alltime favourite.
I've been holding off on this one for a while now, as i only recently got their latest album, having never heard of them before all the recent exposure, and getting well sucked in by some very good reviews of this album.
Can someone please tell me what i'm missing here?!
I've given it a few spins now and I just cannot for the life of me see what the hell the fuss is about with these guys?
Their songs are boring and predictable. Their musicianship is poor and they have no chracater in their playing to at leats make up for this. The singer's voice is one of the most irritating i've heard in a long time, whether he be trying to sing or scream, he does neither well.
When they try and get aggressive, its still weak as p*ss, and when they go soft and mellow its just boring and annoying. I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music and can usually find something good about most bands (within reason), but i'm affraid that either these dudes are immensely over-rated, or i've just missed the point entirely.

Anyone get tickets to see them? I see they've sold out the hi fi bar?
The Vines were on LETTERMAN last night.Only one word can describe the performance -"CRAP".:o
I dont know anything about the Vines but they have done a great cover of the Beatle's "I'm only sleeping" on the "I am Sam" soundtrack.
Plenty of great songs on this album (what else do you expect from Lennon/McCartney) - do yourself a favour.
