What would you do with Ronnie Burns right now if you were coach of Geelong??

I have never been as disappointed in a Geelong player's performance and efforts this season as I was with Ronnie Burns at times yesterday. He had 13 possessions, 6 kicks 7 handballs and kicked 1 behind, but not many of those possessions were effective in my opinion.

If I was the coach, I'd sit down with Ronnie and have a meeting to discuss exactly where he's going with his football and what's expected of him. I wouldn't drop Ronnie just yet, but I'd put him on notice that his performances must improve, say over the next 2 weeks, otherwise he will playing in the VFL.

What does everyone else think?? Is Ronnie being played our of position?? Should Mark Thompson be playing Ronnie Burns closer to goal where he can do the most damage??

I said it on the other threads, and I won't mince my words here, either...

Drop Ronnie to the VFL for at least a week or two, and recall someone from that team who IS on form. Such as David Mensch or Mitchell White. Someone with a veteran influence that would rub off well on a young team needing to sew up a finals place and therefore get that finals experience.

"Bomber" Thompson needs players at this crucial stage of the season that are on form-- and can do without those who aren't performing at the best of their abilities. Unfortunately, as much as Ronnie Burns has given to the GFC over the course of his career, he falls into the latter category right now.

The Cats need wins to sew up that finals spot, and I can't see them getting there with Burns in his present playing form. After all, like I had said before, that seven-game winning tear came not because of Ronnie but rather in spite of him, and Thompson can no longer succeed nor afford to work around his shortcomings on the field. St. Kilda, Freo, Brisbane and Hawthorn are too smart not to know that they can exploit that weakness.

Change is needed, and it is needed now.

Cheers,
William

Quite simply put Ronnie in the VFL for a couple of weeks and bring in either Menschy or White. This will make Ronnie know that he can't keep playing the way he is and still remain in the 1s. Players like Mensch and White will add experience to our young team!

What about offering him as trade bait?

Trade bait is a definate.

But we've still got another 4 weeks (hopefully more) to put up with him.

Drop him into the 2s, surely Bartel would be of more use at the moment.

Other teams are startign to work out if they play an attacking player on him, he doesn't pick them up.

actually...Ablett playing his position, and bring in Timmy McGrath

both are aggressive (both have been tackling well), but Ablett won't vent his frustration at will

We'll have to drop him to the VFL to get his confiedence level up a bit (2 weeks), then bring him back into the 1s for the last couple of games. If he has not improved I agree he should be considered for a trade.

i wouldn't like to see him go, but if we can get something good, then go for it

I heard he hasn't attended club functions and fundraisers of late, so if he is not prepared to give the GFC 100% commitment then maybe we would be better off trading him.

I don't think that those factors would be reasons enough to trade Ronnie. His form is down, and that's what should be judged on. If the club were not happy with his attendeces to club functions I believe they would discuss that with him, rather than trade him for that.

Ronnie's still in the team this week to play the Saints. Mark Thompson has said he is looking very closely at Ronnie and if he doesn't perform, it's to the VFL with Ronnie. Surely if it's another poor game this week from Ronnie, he'll be put in the VFL next week.

Hopefully, it won't be one week too late.

Like I said before, if the Cats should manage to lose to the Saints, they would need two wins in their three, tough remaining games (away to Freo, home to Brisbane and vs. Hawthorn at Colonial) to make the eight. Here's hoping the inclusion of Burns does not backfire on Thompson.

Having said that, I still think Geelong will win by 40, maybe 50 points.

William

Ronnie Burns is one of the games greatest players, he tackles hard, is good on both sides of the body, can take a strong mark, is always in a nd under the packs and is a great team man.

I was dissapointed in 1996 when he did not make team of the century, I put $50 on him at odds of 15,000 - 1.

I think he should play in the ruck this week as I think he has more talent than King and Mooney combined. Next year he should be named Geelong captain, be given a pay rise and Bomber should give him a run at full back.

I have $25 on him for this years brownlow and he is my tip for next years coleman medal, equal with Rahealy of course.

Possumisagun,

I thought I'd let you know that I am currently in training so I can take on Ian Thorpe in the 400 metres freestyle at the next Olympics. I'm also hoping to be the first athlete in Olympic history to win both the 100 metres sprint and the 100 metres freestyle swimming, not to mention I will be the camera at the bottom of the pool for the women's synchronised swimming and the ball for the women's water polo matches!! :D;):D

Now that we've got the comedy side of things out of the way, lets watch Ronnie Burns kick 5 goals this week in a best on ground performance that will inspire Geelong to a big victory!! :):)

That's great Seindude, but I do not like your chances, for Athens I have my money on Eric Mousambini for the 100, 400 and 1500m swimming events, as well as the heavyweaight in the powerlifting.

As for the running, my money is on Justin Madden, the former Carlton ruckman is a sure thing.

and you think this is comedy?... you have a warped sense of humour

I think Ronnie's suffering from not doing his usual pre season. We must send him back home over the summer to do the usual thing, and I think we'll see him back to normal in 2003.

I thought it was a much better effort today by Ronnie Burns until he got injured. He looked dangerous around the forward line and kicked 1 goal but could have quite easily have been 3 or 4. Lets hope his injury isn't too serious and he can line up next week against Fremantle.
