View Full Version : Bombers keen on Street
Talk is pretty stong that the bombers are keen to get Peter Street next year, maybe a good swap for Scott Lucas if you ask me.

I'd be happy with that.
Salary cap obviously a worry with Essendon and we could probably do with a long kicking forward given Mitchell White isn't quite the player we expected.
Pressure would be on if King went down though.
Have Mark Blake available in next year as part of father-son, but with the new rule we have to way up Blake versus Nathan Ablett, given we can only take one a year from now on.
Michael Turner and Damien Christensen say Blake will definately play league football
I'm sure once Nathan realises how much his brother is making, he'll come on board.

i could see that. obviously we'd need their first round draft pick as well :)
how old is lucas?
Maybe they'll give us Lloyd. :D
He's had a "Barry Crocker" of a year.;)

JUBJUB,
I doubt it!! :D:D
It will be interesting to see what happens with Street at the end of the season. Don't forget we have young Chambers who could develop into a good ruckman. :)

In the past i have desperately wanted Scott Lucas, but when you take everything into account, he isn't worth having.
Scott Lucas, like many others, is a downhill skier.
He looks superb when Essendon are going well, he looks like a superstar.
But, put him in an average side and well, he becomes a 25 year old David Mensch.
I'm of the opinion that Scott Lucas, in an average side like ours, would be a dud.

Exactly.
He is one of the most overrated and overpaid players in the league.
I don't want him.

not even if he can kick goals?
i think we should look at any quality tall forward, and lucas is a quality tall forward...not exactly a superstar, but then Street won't exactly be a superstar being shaded by king
Maybe not a superstar, but in terms of relative worth Street would be highly desirable by the Bombers. Street has a lot of potential, but in a way his career may be ruined by staying at Geelong where he won't get first ruck duties for years, if ever.
King is only 19 months older than Street and will dominate the ruck at Geelong for another 6 or 7 years.
Street would have to be worth, at a minimum, a first round draft pick to the Bombers and the worse the Bombers do this year, the better their draft pick will be. But I wouldn't rush to get rid of Street, he'll be worth even more trade time next year as he will get better over the next couple of years.
Even Chambers may be too old, the next big ruckman after Street for Geelong could well be Blake, who should be nicely developed by the time King is ready to delegating duties. If he is any good, then Geelong should pay him not to nominate for the draft this year and select him next year.
Or even more pertinently, draft him next year unde father/son. There must be a real question mark over Nathan Ablett. He has been consistently in the best for his team. But his team is Modewarre Under 18, and they have been getting thrashed recently. Only scored 1 behind the other week. Is that really the form you want from your recruits, even if they are the son of the alltime greats? Nathan should really prove himself a bit, both in ability and application at a higher level, whether that's in the Falcons or even the seniors at Modewarre.

Lucas is only a "quality tall forward" in a top 2 side. In a middle of the table side he is nothing more then an average conveyance.
If we were a top 2 side i'd take him in a second, but we're not, so Lucas becomes worthless to us imho.

With the father/son rule being changed, how can Geelong work it so we can draft both Blake and Ablett?? Does it mean that if we want both of them we have to get either Blake or Ablett to not nominate for the draft this year, with an agreement by Geelong to draft them the following year?? How does it all work??

This is a very interesting test case of the Draft, because the AFL Commission may have changed the Father Son Rule, for this Years November National Draft.
Geelong is lucky that they can still get Tim Callan 3rd round.
But getting on to the issue. The changing of the Father Son Rule is a Joke, but the AFL sometimes backs down when there is a big name involved.
Gary Ablett snr 1984-96 242 games
Rod Blake 1971-83 176 games
In this case the sons of two Geelong Life Members are eligible for to be taken under the Father son Rule in 2003.
SeinDude, under that rule change only one of Ablett or Blake can be taken under the f/s rule. (Blake)
Then if (Ablett) wants to nominate for the Draft he has a 1/16 chance of being picked up by Geelong.
BUT Ablett does NOT have to nominate for the draft, if he still fits the age criteria he can still play U18's with the Falcons or like David Clarke did in 1998, play a full season in the VFL as a top up player, then be drafted like Clarke.
Given that Blake would have been coming of his 3rd season at the Falcons and 6'5 Ruckmen don't fall off trees, Geelong have to get Blake in preference to Ablett.
As Jim Boy said Nathan Ablett has to prove himself (not dominate and star) in the elite underage competitions in the U18 Competitions and National Championships.
But it is a great problem to have.

nolsey77,
So, going by what you're saying, Geelong should pick up Blake and Callan this season, and Ablett wont nominate until the following year, playing next year in the Falcons and therefore giving Geelong the chance to draft him at the end of next year. :):)

Mark Blake is not eligible for this year's draft, misses by 2.5 months. If Geelong want both Blake and Ablett guaranteed, then one would have to picked up next year under father/son and the other the following year. Otherwise one would have to nominate for the draft and it would be pot luck.
Assuming Nathan is good enough and if Geelong were to put one off for a year, then they would probably pay Blake to be a top up player in the reserves or even the Falcons, as a ruckman, he would be unlikely to be required in the seniors for 2 years. I can't imagine it would be breaking any rules and the payments wouldn't be counted in the salary cap

No
In the upcoming November 2002 Draft
Tim Callan can be picked up.
In the November Draft 2003
Geelong will have to Choose between 1 of Ablett and Blake, then ask the other to not nominate, but train and play with the VFL team then be picked up in 2004.
so it would work like this.
in 2001 Gary Ablett jr then plays 2002-
in 2002 Tim Callan 2003-
in 2003 Mark Blake 2004
in 2004 Nathan Ablett
in 2020 Baxter Mensch:D

If either Ablett or Blake decided to hold off nominating for a season i'd think they'd go back to the Falcons (assuming Ablett actually gets there).
Both players will be eligible to play in the TAC in 2004.

my understanding is that Terry Callen only played 62 games for geelong. now that the afl have changed the rule to 100 games that would unfortunatly make Tim ineligable to be selected for geelong under the farther /son rule.

Yeah I heard that change too. Hopefully we can get him up as a normal pick!

The father/son rule changes take affect in the 2003 draft. So we can still pick up Tim this year as the old rules apply.
