We have taken only 25 marks inside 50 so far this year?!?!?!

That is an average of just over 6 a game

Compare that with Geelong and the Doggies who have 70+

sounds about right. the results speak for themselves. however we have never been a high marking team in the fwd 50 so these stats might be a little misleading.

The thing is even Adelaide were 3rd with 65 marks inside 50.

They dont have the best forwards but they seem to be making it work well.

Let me guess? Hansen and Lynch have around 5 each? McKinley would have atleast 10 so yeah about right.

It's because our players are either young and inexperienced or older and out of form so their delivery into our forward line has been poor because of bad disposal partly from the amount of pressure put on them.

Another reason in additional to poor disposal into 50 and what I think is a much harder problem for our team to solve is the fact that we don't have many contested marking type players. Who do we have in our team that can take a contested mark? McKinley, Hunter, Seaby are pretty good at it, Waters, Staker, Glass are okay at it. Out of these options McKinley is the only one who spends full time in the forward line, has only played two games and is a midsized player. Our two key forwards Hansen and Lynch have never been very good at contested marks. For a bit it seemed that Lynch was improving, but lately it looks like he has regressed. Hansen on the other hand can only really mark on the lead. So really we need to put in some guys that can take a contested mark until our midfield delivery has improved a bit. (ie our young players have gained a bit more experience and some of our older players have found some form)

Another problem is our general forward line structure but that would take a while to explain as well so I'll leave it at that.

Out of the 25 I reckon 10-12 are deep in the pocket.

and the rest are right on the 50.

Not too many are gonna be in that dangerous spot straight in front.

I reckon Adelaide took more marks inside 50 Vs Us in round 2 than we have all year.

Sorry but Rd 1 v Bris and Rd 3 vs Freo in particular we made SOOO many errors with no pressure it wasnt funny.

I reckon the underlying factor is our fitness. It's SHOT. Possibly one of the worst in the AFL's at the current point in time, which says a lot considering a few years ago we used to run oppositions off their feet. You can tell the fitness is down because no-one is leading, they're all congregating in a big pack inside the middle of the 50m line. How predictable can get ya get. And considering how shit our forward line is, there's no way we're gonna kick goals like that. I think they players need to do some hard running, I've been more impressed by some of the youngsters this year than the senior players. I reckon it's probably due to the fact the WAFL teams gave their players more of a work out in the pre-season. Could be wrong, but it looks like that to me.

Apart from the noticeable lack of contested-marking forwards, I've lost count of the number of times when a midfielder, not under pressure, delivers it way over even the outstretched arms of a leading forward.

Something must be amiss either in the coaching or drilling aspect for this to occur so often, surely ?

I know. the loss of cousins and judd shouldn't affect the level of skill of the whole team. Its as though they don't know who to give it to now because they always tried to get cuz and judd involved in the game and always looked for them.

when we do mark it inside 50 its never in front. always in the pockets and that why we always kick behinds. We aren't that bad at goal, but the angles are always tight. can't expect mircales.

Goes along nicely with the average losing margin of 50pts

Still cant believe how atroscious the forward line is, when on earth are we going to have a power forward line? Still seems a like a long distance dream

Just one question. If Ben McKinley, with three games experience, can take marks and kick goals with our forward line entries, why can't Lynch and Hansen do it?

Goldfish
15 Apr 2008, 11:44
May have someting to do with Lynch and Hansen taking the first and second best defenders with McKinley having the third, although that's not making excuses for either of them as they are both seriously out of form.

Are we indeed worse than Melbourne?

This coming weekends game will tell us quite abit I reckon.

Port have 0, zilch, nadda, nothing confidence atm but still had a lead of 48 at one stage.

We had a lead of 35+ v Brisbane and just managed to hold on. Just.

Hows our confidence going to be if we cant beat Port at home?

Ouch indeed. Hansen and Lynch have been awful this year. Sure Lynch might be getting a lot of inside 50's and working hard up the ground, but in the end he's paid to kick goals, and he's not delivering. Sure midfield delivery hasn't helped, but we don't even have the beginnings of a forward structure, it's "kick and hope" stuff at the moment.

I miss Mark LeCras. :(

I know. the loss of cousins and judd shouldn't affect the level of skill of the whole team.

Of course it does. We lost 350 games of AFL experience (plus 400 more from Chick and Jones), and the young guys who have come for them in don't yet have their poise or experience and thus panic a bit and think they're under more pressure than they are. Hence the drop in standards.

Isnt it?

Sorts the men from the boys or indeed the women from the girls.

Its almost great going into a match not expecting a win ala 2001, no pressure whatsoever.

Do you have the tally of marks taken by opposition players inside our forward 50? ;)

Already happened i fear... this type of confidence loss is very hard to recover from fully in a short period of time..
Assuming things go our way i'd predict it'd be hard to gain full confidence again before mid season at least. Sounds pessimistic i know - but think about it, even when we are winning again there will probably be that niggling doubting fear in the back of their minds..

Exactly. How good did we look in the first Qtr against Brisbane in round 1. Why? Because our midfield dominated.

Speaking of midfield. Juddy played an absolute blinder today Vs melbourne. He was everywhere.
