View Full Version : Daniel Kerr - Similarities to Cousins circa 2001

Personally I think Kerr's at a similar stage of his career to what Cousins was back around 2001.

Back then the eagles lost/had players reaching the ends of their careers like Kemp, Pyke, Evans, Heady, Matera, Mainwaring etc and Cousins was suddenly left as the only star midfielder in what was now a youngish team rebuilding.

Kerr himself was still a rookie, Judd was a year off being drafted, Fletch was still a tagger, Embley was an incosistent half forward, Stenglein was at the crows, Braun was ravaged by injuries etc

What it left Cousins was a support cast of Richard Taylor, Phil Read, Wooden, Schofied, Banfield etc the sudden star support of yesteryear wasn't there for him.

Kerr's suddenly finding himself the spearhead of an Eagles midfield which has Braun and fletch reaching the end of their careers, Butler ravaged by injury with only Stenglein and Embley remaining from the old guard to provide any semblance of support.

Like Cousins found himself waiting for the likes of Kerr, Judd, and co to develop back then Kerr now finds himself in a similar predicament today. Here's hoping when the likes of Masten, Selwood, Hurn, McNamara and co complete their development we can have Kerr win a Brownlow like Cousins did in the latter part of his career.

It's amazing how we've effectively come full circle on this one except with a different cast.

Good points all.

Something hopefully the club is considering when talking to Kerr that they see him as the leader of the new midfield and to grow into the same role that Cousins played of making the younger players feel bullet-proof when they walked onto the field.

He needs something because he's going to find the coming season or two much tougher than before as he picks up more attention. That sort of leadership role is partly what made Cousins the great player he was - the same opportunity is there for Daniel Kerr, but the club needs to handle it right.

He's no longer playing with his peers - he needs to step up to be a leader.

Indeed good work.

IMO Kerr needs to kick the ball more, was watching some matches of his in 2002 and was kicking goals and kicking inside 50 much more than he is today.

As for the comparison it's exactly what i was thinking the other day, i think cousins may have been slightly younger then kerr and may not have played with quite as good a midfield as kerr did but besides that there are many similarities.

Fair post.

I also think Priddis will help ease the load off Kerr once he is back from injury and has more time out there.

F*ck Judd is a tosser for leaving

Great call Kane.

I remember Cousins stood out like a rose amongst weeds that year, was just a sensational footballer.

Will Kerr do the same this season 08?

I quietly have my doubts but am happy to be proven wrong. :thumbsu:

The call of home was too strong in the end lads, we must move on.

Beau to be suspended after laying Judd out Rnd 7. :D :thumbsu:

The other comparison i was drawing is that our Key forward combo is reminding me of our key forward combo from the early 90's

Hansen - A ranga who dyes his hair blonde, a workhorse but is prone to be inconsistent aka Karl Langdon

Lynch - A Strapping full forward with a booming kick and is prone to inaccuracy aka Peter Sumich

Good call

I think Kerr has a fair bit more to work with though - the likes of Stenglein, Selwood, Priddis are AFL standard midfielders already.

Can See it now: Melee: Judd V ALL Eagles...

West Coast players have been fined, after all 22 players scragged ex eagle Chris Judd at the weekend, may face possible criminal charges after starting the melee at Perth Domestic Airport... Robert Walls, also on the same flight, incredibly survived the eagles wrath.

Sorry bad attempt at humour..

Seriously we must move on. The new brand of eagles will show us the way, we will win another premiership before Judd retires..

Not making excuses for his moron behaviour, but it would be understandable if the pressure of carrying the whole side got to Ben Cousins over 2000/01. He put in some amazing performances, but watching West Coast run around as Ben Cousins FC wasn't all that enjoyable, and wasn't good for the player.

Hopefully Embley, Stenglein etc, stand up and give Kerr some decent support in midfield while we grow our next batch of jets.:)

With the only silverware Judd winning being a Michael Tuck medal as BOG as Carlton win another Wizard Cup.... before finishing last and winning another wooden spoon in the regular season

Even better deep in the 4th with Carlton up by 5 points, Judd's streaming into goal to ice the game when out of nowehere Masten lays a tackle and it's holding the ball. Masten takes teh kick quickly and delivers it to Kennedy, Kennedy takes the ball and pinpoints a pass to Notte on the lead. The siren goes, Notte takes his kick after the siren and its a..... GOAL! Eagles win by a point with the 3 players Judd was traded for combining to give the Eagles the win!

*sigh* if only

Nice post.

If Kerr 2008 = Cousins 2001, then where do we see the next Judd coming from? Masten? Ebert? Daniel Rich maybe?

Excellent post. In a way it helped Cousins develop leadership skills too and during games he was unstoppable afterwards.

Hope the same happens to Kerry.:thumbsu:

I don't get it. Kerr has played 4 games this season after coming back from a hammy and playing no part in the NAB cup.
He has been excellent in 3 of those 4 games, last week he had a bit of a shocker, but who didn't. Its not because he is getting the number 1 tagger its because that the way he plays. He has always been a bit inconsistent.

I think our team has lost all of its confidence its quite sad to see. This is the same team that pushed Collingwood every step of the way last year. The team has 17 premiership players left we sureley cant be this bad

Kerry Cox Glass Stengelin Embers Priddis really have to step up some more

One problem with that though
Kerr - playing injured
Cox - playing injured
Glass - playing injured
Embers - Ill
Priddis - Injured

Priddis was doing a great job before we was injured and there isn't a lot more Kerr and Cox can do really.
Glass is just starting to regain full fitness and was ok on the weekend.

For me out of that lot only Embers and Stnglein really need to step up. Stinger was terrible on Goodes, maybe a more attcking role could do some good?

I heard Kerr has said the biggest loss out of all the people who have left is none other than -

RoJo - he said that the guy would just block and make paths for him at every contest - now thats gone he is getting hammered.

Interesting spin on things .

I remember saying back in 2001 that Cousins would win a premiership by the time he was 26 (because he was just too good and we couldn't stay shit forever)...missed out by a year I think.

There are definitely similarities to Kerr and Cousins' positions...I think Kerr however is in a slightly better one with regards to his support:)

RoJo and Chick really

They didnt pick up 30 possesions a week, but what they did do was the little one percenters which made the rest of their team mates look even better

Cant compare the 2.

Cousins was such a better player than Kerr.

Cuzz was a true leader and in 2001 he was awesome!

Kerry is good too but some of his disposal is shocking.

Another thing is Kerr does not kick enough goals.
