Who do you rate the higher out of these two?
vinnie_vegas69
17 Apr 2008, 20:07
Obviously, I rate Collingwood higher ;)
I think we've got less top level, mature talent - 25 and up - like Brent Harvey, Shannon Grant, Nathan Thompson, Corey Jones, Daniel Harris and Brady Rawlings, than they do.
However, I'm more hopeful of our younger brigade - 22 and under - than I would be if I were a Kangaroos fan. That's not to say their youngsters aren't very solid - They should be hopeful. I'd just say that Collingwood's younger brigade has a little more star power.

I cannot split them. I think Collingwood have the better youngsters but the Roos have a better top line bunch. I reckon they are about even, but the Kangas need to make there run within a few years whereas Collingwood seem to have a pretty young side that could stick together for quite some time.
North easily. The Pies list looks quite weak. They need about 2-3 quality young midfielders to replace their old battler midfielder set and 2 quality KP forwards to replace the Rocca/Rusling/Reid disaster. A loyal Fraser replacement would help, plus another KP defender. A Captain under the age of 34 would also be a good investment. :)

Collingwood are by far greater. Terrible coaching just cost them last week.

Right at the moment, Collingwood.
I'd say it would be about even if North had played one half decent game so far this year. North did play a decent half or so against Hawthorn, but that's about it.

I'm prob biased so I think it's fairly even, but how 'easily'?

Collingwood easily. In the last few years North haven't had any superstars but have been pretty even all over the field. Recently, despite getting some good players back in the side, they have also had some real ordinary players come into the side (Power, Brown, Wells is treading water, Hale, Harding). The pies have better youngsters, better top line players, better coach. They are pretty much ahead in all criteria.

To me, Pies have a much better list. Nothing more to it.

Disaster? Rocca's been an important player for us over the years, he isn't a superstar by any means but he's been more than serviceable. Ruslings a promising lead up forward who has been cut down by injuries, and Reid's a very promising young player in only his second year and has only played a handful of games. We also have Dawes yet to debut, another promising key forward, i fail to see how that's a disaster.
As to the question, I'd say that Collingwood has the better list, obviously biased though. We'll find out more on Saturday I guess, hopefully last week was a once off :o

Rusling promising? lol. Even many Collingwood supporters concede the guy may not be up to it. He can run fast on a straight lead, but in terms of all other aspects of playing a "small KP forward" role, he is very ordinary. Rocca has been good in the past, but is fast declining as retirement approaches. Agree re. early days for Reid but he doesn't really seem to have any capabilities that would concern an opposition, and his kicking is woeful. Sellar would have been a much better choice. Who else? No-one, and that's the point. T Cloke is your only good KP forward, and he is by no means a star, more of a workhorse. :)

Chris Dawes missed most of last year through injury, but is being groomed as the Rocca replacement. He and Reid are both works in progress, but have shown good signs early. We do need to pick up some midfielders, but I wouldn't think our forward line is of much concern at the moment.

Don't know anything about Dawes, so can't comment. I just think there's an unbelievable amount of pro-Collingwood media overhype over the Pies list. If you look at their list objectively, it really isn't that good - pretty much middle of the road. with some areas improving, but others going backwards, and still BADLY needing new talent in the midfield in particular. North may not get the media overhype of the Pies, but they have done a fantastic job at building up their list in recent years, and it's just a better quality list overall. :)

Actually, the last 2 years have been the only 2 years that Rocca has kicked over 50 goals in a season. That suggests he is actually performing better than he was previously would it not? He tends to disappear, but he's still an important part of the side.
Rusling is handy as a 4th forward or so. He can pull a decent performance at times, such as against Sydney last year. He isn't anywhere near a star, and wont be.
Reid will be a good player. A lot of forwards such as Richo have forged very successful careers with a sub-average kick. And also, on Reid's kicking, I am convinced at the moment it is a mental issue. At VFL level his kicking is fine, I just think he's felt nervous at AFL level so far. Hopefully it come right, but from what I've seen he's a lightning fast forward who leads well. He'll be a good player.
T Cloke is our best and fairest winner at 20. He'll be a star in the future, I have no doubt about it.
Key position wise Collingwood are in decent shape. It's our midfield that is the worry.

Pies. Easily.
OK.....I may have underestimated the Roos:rolleyes:
Great win tonight.
Yep good win by North. Thought they would have won by a lot more though. The Pies just lack any quality through the midfield, and their KP forward setup is woeful. They should have drafted Sellar. :)

That makes no sense.
If it's their set up that is the problem why would having a different player help it? Wouldn't changing the way the forward line is structured help it?
For what it's worth the midfield skills are just pathetic and constantly kicked over the head of a leading Cloke, who worked hard all night to only be ignored or get shocking delivery.

It's the midfield that's the problem, not the forwards. If we drafted Sellar the ball would still be going over his head or straight to his opponent, and we'd be no better off. Guys like O'Bree and Johnson are able to get enough of the ball, unfortunately they turn it over way too often.

If that were true then you would have went within 5 points in a preliminary final against Geelong instead of being blown out of the water twice in finals by mammoth totals.. both sides at their best, it must be Collingwood, freakishly bad umpire bounces aside.

Lol you won't be anywhere near finals pressure this year don't worry mate.
North are playing so average so far this year and we're still on the positive side of the ledger.
Lol at the guy mentioning Reid. Malcolm Blight is a massive fan of his.
The reason we both play so shit against eachother is the fact that both teams are designed exactly the same way and share exactly the same principles.
I think North just have another one or two aces up our sleave. Call us workhorses, there are a lot of players in our lineup that can be capable of unbelieveable highs and extremely demoralizing lows.
When the shit is in gear though we aren't a bad side at all.

Oh we are certainly playing average but that has more to do with half our team being under 21, I don't expect them to be consistent for awhile yet, I'm a realist.. I've crunched the numbers, our window doesn't open up until 2010
Look at Geelong, 90% of their team is between 23 and 28 years of age.. they are in the zone!
