View Full Version : Do you like new music?

I feel as though I've come to the realisation, that I no longer seek out "new" bands to listen to. By this I mean, bands that are "new" to the music scene, and are releasing new material now.

I tend to listen to all my 'old' CD's, and any material that I buy, is usually all back-catalogue (with a few exceptions).

It takes something special, for me to go out and buy it, in terms of it being a "new" band for me to listen to.

Even though I know there are a lot of great "new" bands out there, I just don't feel motivated enough to go out and buy their CD's. At best, I'll probably listen to a friend's CD, and be a casual admirer.

When you have 100 or so albums already, you don't "need" to go through the process of finding "new" bands to fulfill some sort of "new" emotional, musical, or intellectual desire, when it has already been fulfilled by the material that you've been listening to for years.

I could probably name one new band from each of the three previous years, that I have gotten into that have been "new" to the music scene at that time:

1999 - Augie March
2000 - Doves
2001 - The Strokes

All the other stuff that I have bought, is either back-catalogue of bands that I've already liked, or bands that I have 'wanted' to buy for years, but never got around to.

Unless a "new" band comes along, that offers something appealing or 'different' in regards to emotional, musical, or intellectual content, no matter how 'good' or 'interesting' they may be (I know that sounds like a contradiction), I am unlikely to fork out the cash.

Pretty much the way I feel about things.

I don't get excited by what's on now. I find so much of what is popular right now is almost impossible to distinguish from one another. I guess I don't understand what makes somebody like Nickelback, for example, so special. They sound like every other popular rock group from the last 10 years, right down to using the exact same guitar effects, drum sounds, and vocal styles.

For me to appreciate a new band, the opposite has to happen. I have to have something to identify them by - that inevitable quality where you hear a song that you have never heard before but you know it's that band right away because they have that signature imprint on it.

i've downloaded every single song i've wanted.... almost every single album i've wanted...

now i just trawl thru music sites to see what ppl are recommending, and download sh*tloads of new stuff to sample...

also, message boards like this are great for getting new/old stuff i havent heard yet..

yeh, reminds me.. no one has posted their 'august top 5' yet...
i might do that right now....

I would have to say I feel pretty much the same way Stocka. I was just thinking about this the other day. I can't say I am into any new bands and I think this is reflected in the last five or so albums I have purchased. These are mainly from the back catalogue of bands that I am already in to. If I was going to start listening to new bands I would never have any bloody money. All these so called new RnR bands i.e. The Strokes, The Vines etc are great but no one is going to outdo The Ramones, The MC5, The Stones etc. While it is great they take their influences from these bands I would prefer to listen to the real deal so to speak. Also I no longer have FM radio in my car and no longer listen as much to the radio as I used to. I rarely listen to the radio at home (apart from a few selcted shows on JJJ/RRR/PBS and the footy/sport 927) and therefore am no longer exposed as much to new music.

So there you go? Anyone else?

well now my new job involves being in a delivery van all day - I've started to listen to the radio alot, probably for the first time in over 10 years actually.

Triple J and 2SER to try and catch the nu stuff - but like some others here, jeez I'm really struggling to get excited about today's latest releases:(

as for actually being bothered going to a shop and shelling out 30 bucks on a whole CD of this stuff - nope, I could imagine myself flying to the moon more than that.

I dunno what the problem, I can't really put a finger on it yet - But I guess its just the sameness of it all.

I can't tell Linkin Parks music apart from any other Nu Metal / Rap / Thrash crossover band - and its the same for all the other genres in Pop Music too.

oh, and btw - the new Chilli Peppers Album STINKS:mad:

cheers

I used to have this attitude too, but I actually found it, after a while, to be flawed.

You know, no one is going to top Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Floyd et al...so why do they bother trying and why would I bother seeking out the new stuff, when the old stuff is as good as the aforementioned?

The simple answer is, that there is still R&R music out there that can captivate you. A band that despite having all its roots out there to see, has a fresh quality about them that means you just don't give a damn and you proceed to enjoy them for their song crafting capabilities.

I think the major problem lies in radio play and it is difficult in that (to quote Thom Yorke) "Fridgebuzz", to readily identify particular acts that can provide that burst of freshness that you are after.

The adult rock market is not where the money is and hence the average adult tuning into say Tripple J could be forgiven for thinking that there will never be a decent band in the world again! There will be and there already are.

coxon is right, the web should be your port of call when finding out about new bands. Websites like pitchforkmedia.com (www.pitchforkmedia.com) are great.

As much as I can understand that critics are just opinions of someone else, when you hear bands such as Radiohead, Doves, Hives, Strokes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club being collectively heralded as being excellent, chances are, they bloody well are!!
