View Full Version : What significance do you place on the MMC's role in the start to our season?

Bar the first quarter against the doggies, and last week when we were savagely tired, we've played some top footy.

Recent history (without CC's eyes vehemently delving into the record books) shows our better years are generally better when we play well (ie last longer) in the MMC than when we get knocked out first round (see last year).

I know we are 2-2, but we are capable of top 4 football - something which, until I saw the youngsters in the MMC, I didn't think was possible.

Blooding the youngsters in the MMC has given them handy experience, and IMO they've carried the MMC form into the normal season.

I reckon if we were playing in the regional cup instead of the MMC, we would have been slightly less organized in terms of the youngsters, and we would be playing catchup right now.

What are your thoughts?

When you aren't posting on BigFooty, do you power one of these?

We bowed out of the 2005 MMC early iirc and went on to win the minor premiership, but in 06 and 07 our formline followed that of the MMC much more closely. The cup plays a varying role I guess, depending on how the list is shaping.

This year is a little different though, given everyone was basically given a new role.

it's always good to try out the young players then...
what does MMC stand for?

Indeed. This has been one of the more productive pre seasons for us imo - we used Goodwin, McLeod and Edwards in different roles with success, we uncovered Tippett and Mackay and gave Vince the opportunity to stake his claim on a spot to start 08. So yeah, I would say we gained a bit more from this pre season than the others. Whether it proves to be a good form guide for the season overall...time will tell.

I wouldn't say we "blooded" too many youngsters in the MMC, mostly it was a matter of giving them more responsibility than they had previously had - seeing if they were capable of winning the midfield without the aid of the veterans (they were indeed capable).

The following players had yet to make their AFL debuts, while playing in the MMC:
James Sellar
Kurt Tippett
David Mackay
Jarrhan Jacky

Tippett had little impact in the first 3 MMC games, though he was clearly the standout star in the GF. Sellar had a good outing against a poor Collingwood outfit, but showed little in the next 2 games (and was subsequently dropped). Jacky appeared well & truly out of his depth in both of his games, likewise being dropped for the last 2 games. Mackay was the only one who made a consistently positive impression in all games played.

To me, the key lay with the players who had been around for a while longer, but who went to the next level of responsibility: Knights, Van Berlo, Vince & Douglas (Thompson & Reilly already being well established).

The MMC did reveal Tippett's talents, though I'm sure the club were well aware of his capabilities. It also revealed to us just how good Mackay was going to be (will be in the future), having seen so little of him in 2007.

I think it WAS important for us to do well in the MMC, because it gave the club momentum going into the start of the season. When you consider how many of us were seriously contemplating a 0-4 start to the season, it was vital that we started the year with winning form. The MMC enabled us to achieve this.

Mercantile Mutual Cup? I thought it was the Ford Ranger Cup now. Also the fact that we're a football team.

Definitely Mickey Mouse Cup - at least that's what I intended when I first started using the acronym!
